I waited for whoever was going to discharge me. I wasn’t going to sit here forever but when I tried to move my entire body ached. Dee stopped me and I sighed when I laid back down. “I guess I missed our date.”
Dee laughed. “We all missed our date.”
I frowned. “Sage and Dev didn’t go see a movie?”
She shook her head, “You were in a coma.”
“That doesn’t mean you should stop living cause I was dying.”
Dee took my hand in hers and sat down on the edge of the hospital bed. “We didn’t stop living. Dev and Sage came here and watched a movie they had already seen to watch it with you.”
A woman in white walked into the room, “It was all very sweet. Seeing the three of them huddled around a laptop with you in the middle. I think the nurses that day had to throw out your friends well after visiting hours were over.” She smiled at Dee and I clutched at her hand when she tried to leave. The woman’s blue eyes were like ice. I didn’t want to be left alone with her. The patterns around her swirled and shifted and she had no control of them like most Venatori. I couldn’t look at her and had to turn my head.
Dee patted my hand and stood up but she didn’t leave. The doctor spoke again. “I’m Dr. Eriksen. I’ve been monitoring you and your miraculous recovery. We are very glad to have you awake.”
“It’s good to be awake and not dead.”
She let out a forced laugh. “Keep that sense of humor Mr. Sétanta.”
“Nox.” I instructed and looked at her. “So tell me doc, can I go home?”
“Sadly, Nox, no that’s not possible yet. Your muscles are showing signs of atrophy for two weeks of disuses, we want to monitor that. You jumped from a building and we fear that you might be suffering again from depression and would like you to admit yourself into a facility suicide watch program for the next few months.”
“I didn’t try to kill myself. I was saving Garrett.” I was astounded. “It’s not like it’s the first time I jumped from the building.”
Dee gasped. She didn’t know about me or my ability. Dev hadn’t told her?
Dr Eriksen looked at me with exasperation. “Nox. The only other time on medical record that you’ve done these things is when you admitted to trying to kill yourself.”
“I was fucking 13 the last time I tried to kill myself. It’s been ten years.”
“Mr. Sétanta, please. It is in your own best interest to recover appropriately and we’ll watch you for any more signs of suicide. We do not want a field hunter becoming metus.”
Dee put her hand on my shoulder. “What can it hurt Nox. Maybe a break will be good for you?”
“A break? You mean it’s good for me to admit to trying to kill myself. To put my self in a facility where they will keep sharp objects from me. A place where even a pencil is dangerous. Why do you want me to go into that hell?” I looked up at Dee.
She was frowning. “You jumped from a building Nox. We don’t want you to hurt yourself again.”
“You think I tried to kill myself?”
“I don’t know, Nox. You jumped from a building.”
I looked at Dr. Eriksen as I pulled my hand from Dee’s. “Fine. I will willingly submit to suicide watch in the Infimary’s phsyce ward.”
Dee gasped and she tried to take my hand again but I wouldn’t let her. Dr Eriksen nodded, “Madison will be along shortly to take you there. She’s been assisting in your care while here just in case you woke up.”
The good doctor left leaving me alone with Dee.
“Nox, don’t be mad at me.” Dee pleaded.
“You don’t even know me and you believe them over what I’m saying. Why shouldn’t I be mad at you?”
“Nox.”
“Don’t. Okay. I’m going into the pschye ward because you think I’m trying to kill myself.” I looked at her and her green and brown eyes and saw golden flecks floating in the iris. Fuck! I thought to myself as I recalled fleeting images from my dream. “I’ve jumped from the top of the AU building since I was 10 years old. I broke my arm doing it once because I landed wrong, and once I did it to kill myself. But I didn’t, the moment I jumped I used my ability to slow and land, I however busted my collar bone because I hadn’t been fully prepared. It was habit to spread wings of air, soften the dirt. I wasn’t going to die, my own brain wouldn’t even allow me that curtousey. Garrett Spence was posseessed by a demon. The demon took Garrett over the edge and left his body, condemning his pawn to death if I didn’t save him. I still didn’t save him but I tried.”
“You died Nox. All the emergency people were thinking it Dev said. Everyone who say you that day had thought you were dead, and then all of a sudden you were breathing. Your heart was beating. No one was even sure you would wake up again. But your body continued to heal rapidly. The took you into surgery and you came out with no scars whatsoever. The nurses are baffled. If this were a human hospital they’d be freaking out.”
“It’s not a human hospital.” I said and rolled over and winced in pain. Dee sat down in the chair behind me, the chair scuffed as she shifted it. We’d wait in awkward silence until Madison returned to take me away to the fucking pschye ward.

Our sex life became a series of conversations prompted by the things we watched on the screen. Nox would sit and watch some of the things as I surfed around the dark web with me. He almost always remained clothed until later in the evening. He never touched himself, he was always watching me. Making me talk to him about things, why I’d like something. He never judged me for things I watched. He would smirk when he knew I was embarrassed about things, but not because they were embarrassing but because he knew I was embarrassed before he even asked the questions.
He liked our sex life. Or so he claimed. At least that’s what I thought too. One afternoon he was cooking in my kitchen waiting for my friends to show up for game night. It wasn’t anything special but he spent all day in the kitchen. He knew Sasha and I had been together, he said he noticed how close we were before that, but he said it didn’t bother him.
When I walked into the kitchen he corned me against the counter with a smile as he pressed his face into my neck and kissed my neck. I groaned and grew hard just from that alone and he chuckled against my skin. He was aggressive some days, but more often than not he let me take the lead in everything – except the conversations we had a least once a week.
I assumed one of those conversations was on deck and I was right. He whispered in my ear. “Have you been looking?”
At first I didn’t know what he was talking about. But then the conversation we’d had a few nights prior when I had watched my lover masturbate over a video call came to mind. He’d asked if I wanted to add people to our circle. Another lover so I could watch Nox having sex with them. I could feel the blood rushing to my face. I knew Nox didn’t care, but I did. I hated that talking about sex came so easy to him. Why couldn’t it embarrass us both and we’d be on even footing. But as I thought about it I knew that would be devastating for our relationship. Nox thrived on communication. Who could ask for a better partner? I mean he tells you things you don’t even want to know. Nothing disgusting like bodily movements or things, but the scary shit everyone thinks about – things only your therapist should know.
And right now I guess I was his therapist. But he wanted me to know everything inside out, backwards and forwards, up and down. He was an open book. I wasn’t. It was like pulling teeth and I knew he got frustrated with me, but I couldn’t change who I am, anymore than Nox can change who he is.
But I knew what he meant and I shook my head. I hadn’t really thought about it. Nox nipped at my neck and laughed softly in my ear. “Then I guess you won’t be watching anything anytime soon now will you.” He teased me then walked away and continued his dancing and cooking that I’d come to take for granted. He did it so often, so carefree so unbidden. He didn’t care who watched – always the center of attention. Until he fell into that dark hole and then there was nothing you could do to get him out of it except wait. I hated those days. He called them the days of his truth. The days when his life shattered around him and he wanted to curl up and die. I’d only seen one in the short time we’d been together. The night he got back from saving a bunch of boys, he broke down after sex. He was spent – completely unable to cope with the feelings he was having and he’d let me in, gave him himself so completely that he lost his tight control.
It takes my breath away knowing that he trusts me that much. But at the same time it’s terrifying. Nox is broken. Completely and utterly broken. He can’t function outside of the Venatori. He can’t live a normal life because normal doesn’t exist. He is a trained killer. It’s all he knows. And yet he does everything in his power to not kill anyone. I can’t imagine living like he does. The strength and the power he has. And that’s not even talking about what he can do. That fire storm I still dream about. Some nights it’s beautiful symphony and other’s it’s a nightmare, it’s eating everything and anything in it’s way. Beautifully terrifying it sums up Nox to a T.
After watching him a few moments he said, “Don’t think of it as cheating. Think of it as scouting prospective. You have to be comfortable and trust them. If yo trust them, I’ll trust them.” He made it sound so simple and so skeevy at the same time. I only nodded at his statement. I don’t know how I feel about looking for a third, or a fourth, or a couple to have sex with us. Why would someone want to do that. Nox and I were in a relationship, why did he want me to add another. Did he think I wasn’t enough? Was it really about me and my kinks? He had so much more experience than I did. Just the way he moved his body said as much.
I asked as I watched him top a pizza he was making. “What about you?”
He smiled at me, that perfect smile that told me he was being genuine. I’d learned to decipher them just as much as I did the way he was breathing. “I don’t need anyone. You don’t do one night stands, and that’s all I’ve ever done. My taste in people aren’t going to be helpful for you.”
I sighed. He was right. And I could feel the blood rushing to my cheeks. “If we add a third, do you have a preference?”
He looked at me biting his lip, he only did that when he was being shy, I had caught him off guard. But it was gone, replaced with a bright smile, “Honestly, I’d prefer another guy, but I’m not going to be picky. A hetero couple with fluid tendencies would likely be best. We get a guy who likes being with other men, so you can watch us, and a woman so you can watch us. And we all get a little bit of everything we like.”
I wasn’t sure about any of it, but I filed it away for later. I wondered how a couple would work. How the relationship would end up being? Was it just sex? What if we fell in love? Or what if it messed up our relationship. I sighed and I saw Nox frown because he knew I wasn’t exactly speaking to him about all my questions, but he went about his his cooking, his dancing lost a little flair, and I hated knowing I was the cause so I whispered to hide my embarrassment. “I don’t know how any of that will work. What if I fall in love with them, and out of love with you?”
He came around the island dusting off his hands, not that they were dirty it was a habit he did when cooking. Always cleaning his hands. He placed them on either side of me as I turned to face him with my back pressing into the counter. He smiled. “That’s why we talk about things, love. Always – everything – especially sex and love. If you can’t talk about work I get that but me and you – there should be no secrets. I’m not going to let you go without a fight. If I’m fucking something up you need to tell me.”
I smiled and nodded, “And you’ll tell me if I’m making a mess of our relationship.”
He grinned at me and pressed his lips to mine and whispered, “You bet your blue eyes I will. There is more than enough love to share, if you are worried about loving more than one person. They call it poly-amorous relationships. I’m okay with however we work out in the end love. As long as I can come to your bed anytime I want, I’ll take it.”
What if I didn’t want to share him? I sighed. I wasn’t sure if I was being trite. I wanted everything and it contradicted everything else I wanted. Nox kissed me softly, “Don’t over think it love. It’ll be alright no matter how it turns out.”
And here my pessimist boyfriend was trying to make me see the bright side of things. The irony.

The light was blaring and white. And the sound of beeping monitors echoed in my ears like blaring alarms. I growled at the discomfort I was in. My arms were immobile and so were my legs. I struggled against whatever was holding me down. I felt a hand touch my cheek and a soft voice sounded in my ear, “Nox, darling, calm down, it’s alright. You are safe. Calm down and I’ll unbind you.”
I recognized the voice and did as she asked. I smelled roses and felt her hands work the straps on my arms first. I laid still completely waiting for her to unbind me. She muttered to me “Shhh. It’s okay Nox.”
I opened my eyes and blinked back the tears that stung them. I watched Dee undo the bindings on my legs. I tried to speak but I couldn’t my mouth was dry. Dee placed a few ice chips against my lips. I asked, “What are you doing here?”
Dee smiled. “I’m just visiting. But I can manage this much.”
“How long have I been out of it?”
Dee raised the bed so I was sitting up. “A few days. Your nurse says you should be dead.”
“I’ve heard that before.” I sighed. “The boys okay?”
Dee nodded as she sat down in the empty chair. “They have been staying with Kai while Sage stays in your apartment. Dev and I stop by and visit when we aren’t working.”
“How many days, Dee?”
A small girl came in and I saw the purple streak in her hair. I recognized her of course, how could I forget Madison. She took my vitals. “You’ve been in a coma for two weeks while your body healed from crushed bones and internal bleeding. You should have died from that jump Nox. What ever possessed you to jump?”
I frowned, “And Garrett?”
“He died on impact. We thought you were dead too until you gasped when we pulled his dead body from the top of yours.”
“Walker said you could do amazing things, but I didn’t think you could do it while you were dead.”
“Was I dead?” I asked.
“No one really knows. But you should have died Nox. There was no way you should have survived with Garrett dead on top of you.”
I sighed. “When can I go?”
Madison laughed, “Your doctor needs to see you and I don’t think you’ll be going anywhere soon.”
“We’ll keep you company. Even your father has stopped by.” Dee said. “He’s a nice man. The boys love him.”
“They do.” I said. “He loves them.”
Madison spoke at the door, “Your doctor will come by soon and see you, until then don’t move and drink very little.”
I nodded. “Yes, ma’am”

Lying on still waters
Reflecting over my life
without you and me

There was pain, I could feel it. But I didn’t care. The world around me swam with colors. It was like the place I’d been with Dev. Except the ground was recently tilled soil done up in neat little rows. The trees at the edge of my sight were colorful, beautiful autumn colors, but it was warmer than expected on a cool fall day. The sun was bright. In the middle was a large tree barren of all leaves. I’d seen it before. It shifted and changed as I moved towards it. The branches phased and changed like I was flipping a page in a book. It was an old gnarled oak tree, the branches got thinner as it reached towards the sky but each limb was strong. The roots were a mound of strength.
There were three knots in the tree arranged in a triangle just before the branches upwards. I stepped onto the stone statue of a dragon at the base of the tree and ran my fingers over the gnarled knots. The opened and three eyes stared back at me and I fell backwards landing in small pond. Two fish swam around me, nipping, kissing at my fingers as I righted myself. The eyes blinked at me, each a different color. The first dark deep blue so dark and so blue I thought I would drown in the depths of the sea. The one at the apex was green and brown with beautiful flecks of gold scatterd in their brilliance. The last was blue like ice, but so much warmer than it.
They eyes followed my movements as I stood up. The sun was warm and as it fell towards the ground to set into dusk it perched itself upon a branch and held itself there. Forever on the branch caught in the branches to never set upon the world. But it didn’t struggle, it looked like it wanted to be there.
The moon rose from the never setting sun and the sky grew dark and the stars shown in the distance, the moon got caught in the branches. Together sun and moon kissed and a baby sprang forth born of both the light and the darkness. Above the baby hung a mobile made of bats that tried to get away but instead flew in circles entertaining the new child.
A wolf howled atop a stone outcropping nearby. The sound reverberated through my body. I could feel a pack nearby. Their songs echoed back in the distance. At the base of the tree the dragon statue sat atop a copper ring. I bent down and ran my fingers over the shiny metal and felt my power push flee in fear. I placed my other hand on the ring and felt the connection to the tree, to the earth, to every thing around me.
There was a peircing cry and I looked the other side of the tree to see a basket covered in red and white gingham. A child was wrapped nestled in the basket, cold and shivering and when I lifted her from the basket the world fell away.
There was nothing in my arms. Nothing around me but the void of dreams. I stood in a circle. No I floated in a sphere – the sphere Dev had shown me. But there were strings attached to me. Some were bright and others dim. Some were thick and old, and others were tiny but strong.
One was a vine stretching miles away. I couldn’t see anything it connected to but when I touched it I could smell the forest around me. I could feel the wolves. I felt the full moon rise and fall and I felt their bodies shift and change through the phases of the moon.
The thin red line looked nothing more line a peice of fishing wire except it was blood red and so thin I could almost see through it. But no matter how hard you pulled on it the string never lost it’s shape. It didn’t stretch or bend. It was constant.
I found a thread of fire. It was warm to the touch but not hot when I placed my hand on it I felt my little dragon holding on to his snoppy. There were beeping sounds around him and I felt him shiver. I let go startled from the experience.
So many connections. The strongest ones were the ones I knew. I could feel Sage’s energy pulsing through one before I even touched it. I could smell the scent of lavender and jasmine as I let go. Dev light and airy, and I could hear soft sounds of music playing as I touched his chord. It was a guitar string ironically.
I understood I was seeing connections. How Nick saw the world. These were mine. Each one someone I had tied myself to. Dee was there too but I felt nothing when I found hers. I knew it was her, the pink glow was unique to her. So strong, but so silent.
My father was there, and Dorian too. Jace and Adrian. And so many other tiny connections I’d made tied to myself. Strong and weak and some nearly broken. I touched one of ash and it crumbled to the ground. There was a howl of pain – my pain as I opened my eyes.

I turned and waved and then found myself in an empty conference room. But it was set up for dignitaries and here I was in jeans and a t-shirt. Oh well, I thought. I took a seat on the side of the large conference room table while I waited for others to arrive.
The door opened to the conference room and a small black man came into the room. I could see the small dragon shadow behind him and stood up. He smiled. “Sit, Mr. Sétanta. I’m only making preparations for The Council.”
“Do you need help?” I asked.
He shook his head. “No sir, security and all that. We trust you are as unarmed as you come?”
I grinned. “Yes, sir. My only weapon is my ability.”
“As is ours. We appreciate it.”
I laughed, “Except some of you can apparently control Magnus, and others of you can just eat us whole. So it’s perfectly acceptable.”
The black man smiled. His dark brown eyes light with humor I thanked the heavens for a sense of humor. “Yes, you are right. Perhaps we should inform you that there is not a representative here from the Council that has The Dragon’s ability. Only the oldest of us could tame the beasts inside of you.”
“Do you mean that others here wouldn’t be a challenge?” I asked.
“Yes, Mr. Sétanta. The leader of your Venatori will not risk meeting with any of the older dragons.”
“Nox, please. Are any in New York, the oldest of you?” I asked.
“Of course… Nox.” He gave me a wary glance before continuing. “Reginald Pittman is always in New York. Why do you ask?”
I smiled. “Why isn’t he joining us then?”
“Your leader will not permit him on your property.”
“I’d like to meet him. Can that be arranged?” I asked.
“Of course, sir. I can have him here with the others if it is to your liking.” He stated.
“Why would you do that for me?”
He only smiled and pulled his phone from his breast coat wallet. “Alexandra. Mr. Pittman’s presence has been requested at Apex Unlimited.” He paused while he listened to the other end. I could have listened, but I didn’t, there was no need and I didn’t care.
“Yes, Alexandra. The area is secure and there is no danger. The Venatori have agreed we are not in danger, nor are they.” I could hear a frantic voice on the other side. He interrupted. “I assure Mr. Pittman that Mr. Green will not follow through with his threats. It is in his best interests to allow this meeting.”
A few more moments of silence from my black friend and he hung up the phone. “Mr. Pittman will join us with the rest of the contingent. Would you like to add a person to the parlay?”
“I didn’t know we were parlaying. I think we are good.” I stood up and offered my hand to the man. “What should I call you?”
“My name is Marcus, sir.” He took my hand and there was a strange feeling of power struck between us. I don’t think I’d ever been this close to a dragon who wasn’t trying to kill me before. Which wasn’t necessarily true, my Nanny had been a dragon, but she was just a faded memory of a baby.
Marcus smiled at me. “Is there anything I can get you?”
“No. You are our guest, are you not? Shouldn’t I be asking you that?”
Marcus laughed. “Perhaps. But sit. I will have water delivered and maybe some refreshments. I think everyone else is about to arrive, anyway.” He tapped the security comms in his ear.
I nodded. “I’m underdressed aren’t I?”
Marcus laughed again. “Sir, you are dressed exactly how everyone expects you to be.”
“I don’t know if that’s a compliment or an insult.” I sat down and waited.
Marcus moved to the door and stopped with a grin. “It is merely a statement of fact, sir. No one expects anything of you.”
I sighed. “Now that is an insult.”
Marcus frowned. “It wasn’t meant as such, sir. Please excuse me while I finish my rounds before the others arrive.”
I nodded and turned back towards the table wondering what had just happened. Why would anyone counter Mark Green’s words over mine? I knew why I’d made the request, a lot of it had to do with Sage’s last instructions. And to prove to myself I would not let myself be controlled again like that.
I was pulled out of my revelry when the large double doors opened to the conference room. Dae’lin and Gary entered with Mark Green. Walker, my father and Emilio followed them in and took up a post at the end of the wall while the other two sat down. Dae’lin smiled when she saw me. “Sit down, Nox.”
I wanted to stick my tongue out at her but I didn’t. Walker chuckled to himself against the wall. My father and Emilio gave him a sideways glance, and he clamped his mouth shut.
Mark Green took up his station at the head of the table in front of the three standing Venatori. Dae’lin and Gary to each side. Dae’lin sat next to me for which I was grateful.
Our leader was a balding man in his late 60s who was the oldest living Cesari. He had made his name helping Asher Eriksen run Apex Unlimited. But his pattern was weak. He was NC5 but I could feel it was barely on the cusp of it. I let my senses flow. I saw the patterns around Dae’lin fluctuate with her ability. Fire, Air, Earth, Water oscillated in and out of her like they were fighting to take control, but fire was brightest. She had been a fire-starter. But everyone in her family was, her control was scant, but she had controlled it early and hadn’t undergone the same lessons I had.
The Dragon Council contingent was three men and one woman. I recognized Marcus, but he was the weakest of the bunch. He was first and lead the way to their side of the table. The woman was next. Marcus pulled the chair out for the woman with the ruby red hair. Her dragon shadow was ruby colored. I could almost make out the individual scales on her. I smiled as she sat down next to me.
Across from me, a man with blue eyes sat down. His suit matched his eyes, and the dragon shadow behind him was the same color. I felt power dripping from him. But he was not holding back. None of them were as far as I could tell.
A man with graying wispy hair followed them in. His skin was touched with golden hues that were not normal. I smiled and stood as he took his seat. “Mr. Pittman, it’s an honor to meet you.” I gave him a slight bow before retaking my seat.
The golden man chuckled. “You can tell who I am by just looking at me?”
I smiled. “You radiate power. The dragon shadow is larger than the others here. And you are the only one who’s shields are tightly locked down. I can’t see the color of your dragon, but I can guess you are a Golden Dragon. Exquisite and extremely rare, hunted by humans and other races a like for their precious scales, almost to the point of extinction.”
“You know a lot about dragons for one so young.” Mr. Pittman said.
“I take pride in knowing everything I can about the creatures I’m charged with bringing in.”
“An interesting phrasing. Most of your kind just kill.”
I laughed. “You must not have heard of me then.”
“Oh, Mr. Sétanta. I have heard of you. Ilesha speaks highly of the boy she was asked to raise.”
“You know my nanny from when I was a baby?” I asked.
“You think it odd, that your nanny was a dragon? For a Venatori human mother?”
“I was five when I last saw her. I didn’t think beyond that.”
The old dragon smiled, and it was not a human smile, sharp pointed teeth shown through. His own protections must be weakening. He waved his hand and the double doors opened and Dr. Margo Silverman walked through my door. Mr. Pittman spoke from the end of his table. “Nox. I would like to like to introduce you to Ilesha.”
I wasn’t the only one staring at my therapist. But it was only Kai who gasped with the knowledge he’d been sleeping with a dragon. The shield around Margo evaporated and the surrounding shadow opened into a golden dragon half the size of Mr. Pittman’s. I turned to look at him and saw the familial resemblance. “Your daughter? Is she really a therapist?”
“I am, Nox. It’s been a struggle to keep the fact from you for so long. You grow in power every day. Your schedule with me is something even I need to rely on. Shielding that tightly costs me.” Margo said. She knelt down next to me and looked up at me. “I am still the same person.”
I asked, “Why lie to me?”
Mr. Pittman answered. “The dragons felt your presence come into the world in Boulder. That was when Ilesha went to your mother and offered her services as a Nanny. We sense any dragon born into the world – your young Drake here in the building – we knew of his birth.”
I stood up but Margo’s hand on my knee stayed me. “Drake will not be harmed. It is your will.”
“I’m not a dragon.”
Margo smiled. “No, Nox. You are Cesari. The dragon’s feel your kind like our own. Dragons born with human blood.”
“I am still not a dragon.”
Mark Green sighed. “All Magnus are of dragon’s blood, Nox. You know this. You have reminded us of this fact frequently. Every dragon you bring in. Every vampire and every were. Every creature has a history and a life. You remind us everyday we shouldn’t just kill first when the laws are broken.”
I sneered, “Yet we still do it.”
Mark nodded. “We are not so easily changed.”
I rolled my eyes and turned to the Dragon Council. “One of your own tried to take down humanity’s economic and power infrastructure. He’s dead now.”
Mr. Pittman nodded. “We are aware of the passing of The Dragon. The power loss is surmountable. It is my understanding he called you.”
“He made me his puppet, yes.”
Margo’s hand squeezed my knee, but I didn’t turn to look at her. I wasn’t sure I trusted her now. All the lies that I’d been told in my life and she kept a big one. I would deal with it later. Right now there were other things my plate.
“And you broke his control?” He smiled. “I’m highly impressed. Few could do that.”
“Why are you watching me?” I asked.
“We watch all dragons born to humans.”
“You kill them all.” I said.
He frowned. “That is an old tradition. We like to think ourselves a little more civilized than your kind, but sadly yes, that is usually the case.”
“So why is Drake still alive then if you knew about him?”
“There is a method to the tradition. Each child born must be killed in succession. For the past 23 years, half dragon and Cesari have been allowed to survive.”
“You’ve been killing Cesari?” I asked.
Margo frowned. “As much as the Venatori infiltrate the world, everyone else infiltrates the Venatori. The answer is yes, Nox. There are dragons among the nurses who watch for babies of the dragon.”
“So why did you let me live?” I asked her. “You weren’t sent to be my nurse maid were you?”
She shook her head. “No, Nox I wasn’t.”
“So why am I alive?” I looked at her. “Why didn’t you kill me as baby?”
Mr. Pittman spoke, “She…”
“No, sir.” I looked at him. “I want to hear it from her mouth.” I turned back to my therapist, “I want to hear Margo tell me why she didn’t kill me.”
She stood up and backed away from me. Her face was ashen. Her usual bright green eyes were lost in the clouds of memory dulling them completely. “When I found you, there were two of you. A girl and a boy. The first was easily smothered in her slumbers. Air sucked from her lungs – painless. The second child, felt the loss of his sibling and protected himself. I could not get to him. I tried everything. That was when I went to your mother and asked to be her nanny. When she handed you to me, I couldn’t do it anymore. And I’m glad I didn’t.”
I stared blankly in front of me as she told the story of my birth or rather the death of my sister. Margo whispered, “Nox. I think of that day and I regret it every moment.”
I held up my hand with one finger to silence her and her sentence cut short. I stood up and looked at Mr. Pittman. “Will you retaliate against what I did to The Dragon?” I felt my power flair with the question.
He shook his head. “No, young one. Even by Dragon law, he overstepped his bounds.”
“And Drake?” I asked.
“He is in the right hands.” Mr Pittman said. “No one will harm him.”
“And as long as I live no half dragons can die?”
The man nodded. “That is correct.”
“I’m done here.” I walked out of the conference room but Margo grabbed my arm. She said something, but I gave her a level gaze and her hand dropped from my arm and she looked to the ground.

Garrett was hardly in shape, but he was Venatori and the demon carried his body to the roof ahead of of me without a problem. The door swung wide and scraped against the ground in the wind. The sun was bright but it was cool up here on the top of the AU building.
The demon’s eyes were glowing red when he looked at me. He laughed. “I’d prefer not to die,” it said to me.
“So why did you run up?” I asked. It was such a stupid move.
It laughed. “I have a plan. And you have a choice to make. You can save the man who tormented you your whole life or you can let him die.”
I frowned. “What do you mean?”
“No more talking, boy. I will have you back and the others too. I will have you.” The last words were said as he stepped up on the ledge of the roof. He turned to face me and the smile was dark and made me shudder with fear. I couldn’t help it I wanted to close my eyes and make it all go away. The demon took a step back and I watched as it left Garrett in a black mist just as his weight carried him backwards.
I was standing on the precipice of a decision. I had to make a decision. A split second decision. There were eight seconds to the bottom, even one second delay could mean death. I didn’t think. It wasn’t because I liked the man, but I could see the fear in Garrett’s eyes as he realized what had happened. I cleared the distance to the edge at a run and dove over the edge. One… I spearheaded my way down to Garrett I moved past him and flipped on to my back. Two… I wove air around us and I felt my body catch against the thickening air. Three… I sent weaves to soften the earth below earth and water to make sure it was as soft as it could be. Four… Garrett’s body collided with mine and I wrapped my arms and legs around him and spread my weaves tighter and thicker than I had before. Five… I didn’t want to die saving this bastard. But I couldn’t let him die either without trying. Six… He deserved to die, but not like that. He deserved to be brought to justice, but this wasn’t justice. I was the better man. Seven …. I was the man he made me and I would forever be grateful even to my dying day.
Eight… I felt my body collide with the earth below and I felt the bones shatter. There was no pain… there was nothing but blackness…

July has been a record hitting month for me. A stressful month but I think it’s getting better. I hope it is anyway. But despite the fact I haven’t been using The Daily Post prompts like usual my traffic picked up this month. The number of views is 2K+ and rising, we still have a few more days left to catch some new views. A lot of those views are from you all coming back to read the multiple posts I’ve been making. So yay! thanks for following the stories going on.
But that really isn’t the metric I use to determine traffic. I love watching my views skyrocket and break records. Today broke my last record of 182 views and now I’m at 224 views and growing. For those of you who have a massive following I know these numbers are crap compared to yours. Compared to this time last year I had fallen off the posting wagon and even before that my numbers were abysmal… I should grab a screenshot of what those first few months looked like but they’ve all fallen off the view so I can’t.
The number I look at is visitors. All year my visitors have been going up. So each person who comes to visit me in a given month is going up. Yes it counts you everyday, but still it’s a much better number than the views. I’m one shy of 600 visitors for July. And this month I didn’t use the daily prompt at all. But I was tagging NaNoWriMo and I’m sure that’s pulling in a good bit of numbers, but hopefully those folks will now stick around. We’ll see.
Anyway. I want to thank all of you who take the time to read my ramblings and my ill-formatted stories that AJ writes. You all are awesome! To all those new comers, yes the whole point of the blog is for me, Nox, a fictional character to speak his mind. I don’t bite, and I’m not trying to fool you, but really I love talking – ask Sage and Dev (and soon Dee). I’m sure they’d like a break every now and then.

I’m not sure what else I can add to what I’ve already said about my home. I’ve talked about the territories. The AU building. A little about the Night Life building – this one will become a big part of the next novel length story after The Children of Morpheus.
There are at least two more full length stories to finish my overall character arc after the Children of Morpheus. And possibly more in between, but only one of them really has any possible plot line.
There is my First Hunt still left to do too. You’ve seen bits and pieces of it and I started it. I should finish it soon.
sighs I really don’t have much more to say sorry.

Garrett was talking with Dae’lin in her office. I knocked and I paled when I saw the look on Garrett’s face. He waved for me to enter not that I had been waiting for his invitation. Dae’lin’s back was to me when I entered and when the door closed the windows went black. Not the shades being pulled down, they turned black. Dae’lin turned around and I saw dead dark eyes and I took a step backwards. The door knob was stabbing into my backside and I couldn’t breathe. It wasn’t magic, but fear. Nothing but fear…
“So good of you to join us.” A voice said from Dae’lin’s mouth, but it wasn’t hers. She reached for me and I cringed away from her but there was no where for me to go as her cold fingers traced along the tattoo and down my jawline. “Fear never tasted so good from anyone else.”
There was a flash of light and then several tentacles of air and fire were behind Dae’lin and I stared at them. Dae’lin couldn’t do that. Dae’lin couldn’t touch more than one element at a time, but this demon had possession of her, he could. His fingers dug into my chin as he grabbed it and made me look at Dae’lin’s dead eyes. “What did you do?”
I felt a crushing pain around me as the demon beat at my shield on a plane I couldn’t see. It was like my heart was being crushed in my chest. I couldn’t breathe. Darkness swept over me as I lost consciousness.
It had to be only two or three seconds as I gasped for breath and the demon was standing over me. “It’s stronger than before. What did you do?”
Dae’lin’s small hand flew across my cheek and I felt my teeth rattle in my head. I could taste the blood blooming in my mouth. The demon growled, “Oh the strength. I could break you couldn’t I boy.”
Garrett put his hands on Dae’lin’s shoulders and spoke, “Let me be your vessel. I want nothing more than to do your bidding Morpheus. Let me have him back.”
Dae’lin looked up at him and he laughed. “If I inhabit you, he will not stop and think about killing you. This one, he loves. He’ll not hurt her.”
I reached up in one quick motion and grabbed Dae’lin’s throat and squeezed. I didn’t just use my hand. I wrapped air around her neck and I put a bubble of air and sucked out the air from inside.
Dae’lin’s hand flailed and she grabbed hold of Garrett and I watched as the demon passed through Dae’lin into Garrett. Dae’lin fell into my arms and the demon in Garrett’s body opened the door and started to run. I dropped my patterns around Dae’lin and wrapped her in the elements quickly before I took off after Garrett. He ran for the stairs and like an idiot he ran upstairs. Why the fuck to the bad guys always run up. There was nothing down. He could get away. Unless he didn’t intend to get away. Fuck!

When Nox said we were going out I had expected to go to dinner and dancing. I didn’t expect for him to walk me into the discrete door of Ooh. I was wearing a pair of khaki’s and nice shirt in anticipation. Nox was wearing the same though that was what he wore in general when going out with me. He didn’t wear the sarcasm when we went on dates, just every other time. And he always work a button down long sleeve shirt, though it was never buttoned up. Just there to add extra layers for his back and arms.
He walked up to Sally at the pedastal and she smiled at him with his long dark lashes made look even longer with the dark eyeliner he wore. He placed hand with black painted nails on the wood in front of him with his perfect smile. “We have a reservation. Jaxen would have made it.”
My jaw dropped. I had forgotten he’d known the owner of the club and was on a first name basis. Sally smiled at him again after having looked over the list of reservations. “Yes, sir. He did. He also has a special pass for you.” She handed Nox two wrist bands. “You’ll need to wear these for after his show.”
Nox asked, “Does Blake know I’m coming?”
Sally shook her head, “I don’t know sir. I will have Ernesto inform him that Mr. Oliver’s friend is here with a special pass so he’s aware of it.”
Nox nodded. “Thank you Duckling.” She blushed slightly and waved for us to enter. “Your usual table has been reserved, and drinks will be served once you are seated. The usual.”
Nox put his arm around my waist and leaned in, “Lead the way love.” I took the stairs up to the second floor and found the table I usually sat at with a reserved sign sitting on it. As we sat down, a glass of water with lemon and the rum and coke I usually had were set down and the reserved sign was removed.
I watched as Nox sat down and made himself comfortable, he even untucked his shirt like we were at home. I sat down next to him biting my lip and he leaned in and stretched out as he did it and I couldn’t help but look down the length of his long lean body and notice the bulge in his jeans. “Relax. You do this more than I do. You are making me nervous.”
I laughed, “Yeah you look nervous. Only thing you didn’t do was open your pants for me.”
He grinned at me and reached for his button and undid it. “Are you happy now?” He preened at me, his head resting against my chest as he lounged on the red velvet bench. He was looking up at me through those dark lashes and I had to kiss him. His lips parted the moment mine touched his and our tongues dance. He let out a soft moan.
The soft bell that sounded for a new show to start brought us out of our kiss and as I looked down the length of my lovers body his hand was resting near his cock like he wanted to touch himself. I whispered in his ear, “Touch yourself.” It wasn’t meant as a command, but Nox took it as one with a soft moan and slipped his hand inside his pants and grabbed himself. “I want to watch you.”
He shook his head. “Watch them.” But he obliged me anyway and his cock was out over his boxers and jeans and I couldn’t take my eyes from his gentle strokes. He tapped his head against my chest and I looked at his face, “Watch the show, love. I’m not going anywhere.”
I turned to watch the show as two men stood in the center of the ring. I’d seen the pair often enough. The blonde submissive was standing in nothing but a black leather speedo and his Dom was wearing his classic black leather pants. The blonde stood with an at-ease stance you’d see in the military except his head was bowed and looking down at the ground. His Dom was walking around him inspecting his body and slapping him with the red sash he liked to use. I could feel Nox flinching against me and I put my arm around him and he pressed into me. I glanced at him and despite his anxiety he was still hard and stroking himself. He listened most of the time – almost to a point of failure sometimes. Sometimes I wanted him to say no.
I turned back to the two men. The last time I’d seen them, they were using the straps hanging from the ceiling today they didn’t do any such thing. He stood at attention while his Dom ran the wheels across his body, or snapped the sash against his skin. You could see his knees weaken. But he forced himself to stand up. One particular slash to the back of the knee sent the blonde to his knees and the room hissed. Some out of concern, others because the submissive had failed. Nox had sat up straighter against me. He was waiting to see what happened.
A small leather covered horse was rolled out and the Dom pointed to it and the sub stood up and bent himself over the bench and his hands were strapped to the other side so he couldn’t move, he was stretched out and he wasn’t going anywhere. His Dom instructed him in a small voice that I didn’t hear. Nox whispered to me, “He’s telling him to count loud enough everyone can hear.”
The leather clad man pulled a paddle off the wall and a cane. Nox gripped my hand but he continued to stroke his cock, but I could tell he was on the verge of a panic attack. I held him and whispered, “We can go.”
Nox shook his head, “No. This is part of the show. I need you to see afterwards. And this is a perfect show to have.”
I wasn’t sure this was a good idea. “Stop touching yourself. I’ll watch, but you don’t need to.” I unbuttoned my khaki’s and smiled at my lover, “Put on your earbuds and suck my cock.” There was a moment of hesitation in Nox’s reaction, but he was smiling at me as he looked up from the floor and put himself together before he did as I asked. He mouthed ‘thank you’ as he put in the ear buds and turned on the music, I could hear the tinkling of music but couldn’t make out anything else about it. And then his hot wet mouth ran down my cock and I groaned and thrust into his mouth. Nox pushed my hips to the bench and held me down. He claimed he wasn’t stronger than a human, but I begged to differ, he was. He just wasn’t as strong as a Venatori.
I watched as the Dom paddled his submissive for a count of three which he yelled out. It cracked with pain. But when the first cane slapped across his bare backside, the cry was followed with a broken sob. Nox really didn’t need to see this, but with my lover sucking on my cock and the sounds of the the paddle and cane slapping on tender flesh I was very close to coming. The submissive counted to twelve, three paddles followed by three canings, and I was coming in Nox’s mouth before his Dom stopped. I was doing my best not to scream out my orgasm as Nox swallowed everything. The submissive was unhooked from his restraints and they walked off the stage in hushed whisperes. Nox turned to the stage and pulled his earbuds out. “Come on.”
My legs were weak and Nox was grinning madly at me as we walked downstairs and through a pair of double doors that our green wristbands let us through with. RFID or some other technology letting us in. Coming from the other direction was the Dom and submissive. The Dom smiled at us, but he didn’t say anything as he nodded towards a smaller room, his submissive was walking behind him. Once in the room the Dom sat down in on a couch and his submissive sat down on the floor with his head in the man’s lap. Much like a puppy.
Nox sat down next to him and patted the seat next to him. “Blake, I’d like you to meet Sage.” Blake offered his hand and I took it and smiled.
His other hand was stroking his submissive head and Blake smiled at me, “This is Jaxen.” Jaxen tilted his head and his blue shining eyes were happy and it wasn’t something I had expected. I hadn’t expected the owner of the club to be a submissive either.
Nox interrupted my thoughts. “I wanted to show Sage, the part he doesn’t see on stage. The after care.”
Blake nodded. “Alright. I guess it was a good night to show up. Normally we don’t need to punish. He’s usually very obedient no matter what I do.”
Jaxen’s eyes dropped but Blake kissed him softly. “You took it well, my love. Let me tend to them.” He blonde submissive stood up and laid down in Blake’s lap, and into Nox’s.
Nox looked to Blake, “Is it alright if we touch him?”
Blake laughed, “I will never ever understand your need to ask permission. You make a very good Dom, Nox. Why you’d want to submit is beyond me.”
Nox smiled shyly at Blake. But he didn’t answer him. He only ran his fingers through Jaxen’s hair and the man purred. But I watched Blake tend to Jaxen, he was rubbing lotion and oils over the red areas. Blake started talking like he was lecturing. “If you don’t tend to them right away, they can bruise, sometimes they still do. You’r boy rarely bruises though, if you are lucky enough to hit him more than once before he safe words.”
“I don’t hit him at all.” I corrected. “We’ve not done this yet.”
Blake laughed. “Do you want to? I know I’ve seen you here before.”
“I like to watch.” I defended myself.
Blake nodded and continued his ministrations. “How did he do with the show?” He was talking to me like Nox wasn’t here, and for I guess he wasn’t since when I looked at him, he was zoned out petting Jaxen’s head. It wasn’t sexual in the least at least neither one of them looked like they were getting off on it. It was tender, like I’d seen Nox doing with Drake. I was pretty sure Nox did the same thing when we watched TV and I curled up in his lap.
“He didn’t watch the spanking. I had him put on his earbuds and ….” I hesitated.
Blake continued my sentence, “You had him suck you off so he wouldn’t panic. ” I nodded and he continued, “Now boy, I’m impressed. Most Dom’s would make their sub sit through it regardless.”
“I’m not his Dom.”
Blake laughed. “Maybe so, but you are taking care of him as best you can. Giving him what he needs. That’s all he wants.”
“Why do you know so much about Nox?”
“He and Jaxen went to the same therapist when they were younger. I worked with Adiran with them both. Nox is a good teacher, even when he’s teaching from the bottom.”
Blake patted Jaxen’s bottom lovingly and Jaxen sat up, his eyes were not nearly so glazed over and he smiled at me before he returned his eyes to the ground. Blake stood up and Jaxen followed him. “Jaxen has some things to take care of I need to return him to his office so he can do that.”
He offered me his hand, “It’s a pleasure meeting you.” He looked to Nox and smiled. “You need to come by more often.”
Nox shook his head then grinned, “Maybe, if he asks nicely.”
I grinned. “Maybe, he says.”
We left through the door we had come in and we went home.

When I got upstairs Dorian was waiting for me by the door. The glass bowl I used was missing and I wondered who cleaned it up. “Did I scare them a lot?” I asked Dorian as we walked out of the front door into the late summer air.
“You scared me a lot. I’m sure that you scared those you love more.”
“You aren’t going to comment on the number of people I love?” I asked with a wry smile. I didn’t really expect an answer. Dorian was very much about image and I did not fit his image.
He smirked. “Nox, you have never been a normal boy. Why should your love life be simple? There is a lot of things that your heart needs to make up for. I never thought I’d see the day where you committed to anything other than your children.”
The train station around the corner was busy, there were people waiting which meant the train was late. Tempers would fly but for once I was hardly in a rush. Dorian was still smirking at me. “I see the change in you.”
I smiled. “What change?”
“A burden lifted. The patterns around you they are flowing without faultering. I know you can’t see yourself and I don’t half your talent for drawing as you do, but the change is so fundamental to your general being that I’m surprised no ever saw it before.” He shook his head.
“No one sees things like I do.” I said. “I know you say you can see parts of it. Dev showed me what my shield looks like now. I feel better.”
The train rattled to a stop and we waited until everyone piled off so we could enter a full car. We held on to the rail above our heads as it clacked down the track making stops. We didn’t talk, but Dorian’s eyes never really strayed from me.
We got off the train at our stop and when we reached the surface I asked Dorian, “Is it that different?”
He nodded. “Yes, Nox. I’m trying to find the differences so I can explain it to you, but it’s like I know it’s different but I can’t really see what was wrong before. But something was wrong.”
The AU building was in sight, the towering buildings all around us. It was a beautiful sight amist the square buildings. It’s form unique. It was why the Eriksen’s built it that way – to stand out – to hide in plain sight.
Once inside the AU building I looked up and followed the glass elevator up and frowned. Some fears weren’t so easily conquered. But we climbed into the next available car up and I took a breath and hummed a tune that Dev had sang to me the night before. When we hit HQ Dorian took my elbow and walked me out. He was chuckling to himself. “I have never seen you so calm on an elevator before. Is this new?”
I smiled. “Yeah. Dev was with me last time. He sang to me. He does that when I get anxious. I think it’s starting to stick.”
“First Sage, now Devin. I hope she’s as good for you as both of them.”
I smiled. “I’m sure she will be. I’m going to take the stairs to find Garrett.”
Dorian shook his head and pointed towards Dae’lin’s office. “I told Dae’lin to give him a ring and you can talk to him there.”
“Thanks.” I pressed a kiss to Dorian’s cheek. “For everything, Dorian. I don’t thank you enough.”
“You are my boy. Always will be Nox. Even Kai can’t take that away from us.”
I smiled at him and waved as he walked away. He wasn’t blood, but he was truly the only father I ever needed.

This is the third car picture this month. I don’t have a car. I don’t drive. I don’t like driving. AJ doesn’t like driving.
Let’s drive away now.
Runaway. Hide from the world.
Just the two of us.

I left Dorian sitting on the couch flipping through stations again. Sage was sitting at his computer in his basement office busily typing away at his computer. I stood behind him and watched for a little while. I placed my hands on his shoulders and pressed my thumbs into his tense muscles. “You work too hard.”
He groaned before he anwsered me lolling his head back between my hands and looking up at me. “I’m stressed over you.”
I sighed. “I’m sorry, love.”
He turned around and pulled me into his down into his lap. “It’s alright, Nox. You killed that thing with your power. I knew what happened, but when you had done it before it was nothing like this.”
I dropped my eyes. “I got carried away. When I was aware of what I’d done my body retaliated. It was on fire. And then there was you and Dev and Dee around me and I was okay again.”
“You like him don’t you?” Sage asked me. He didn’t make me meet his eyes, but I looked up to see him frowning and looking down as well.
“I like him a lot.”
“You’ll leave me for him.” He said quietly.
“I’m not going anywhere, Sage.” I didn’t know how to tell him.
“I’m not what you need, he is. I see it.” Sage looked up. “I’m okay with that. That you love him. I know you love me.”
“I do love you. I haredly know Dev. But you are right, I do have feelings for him, maybe not love yet, but it’s possible.”
Sage gave me a wry grin, “Back when you were talking to Margo, we talked too. Told her that I didn’t think I could be what you needed me to be. I can’t be the man you need. But I can’t see see a life without your smile or your cooking in my life.” He grinned playfully at me. “I don’t need to be everything. Dev and Dee can fill in the gaps. I grew up knowing that my life was different from others. I grew up thinking I was never going to be enough. Turns out I don’t need to be. I just need to be me right?”
I nodded. “I love you Nox. And if I made you upset with Dee and Dev I’m sorry.”
“I wasn’t angry. I was angry that I was jealous. That you were sleeping with her and Dev and I were being good. I need you to say it Sage. Like so many other things I need need to hear the words.”
Sage pulled me down for a kiss. His tongue slipped into my mouth and we both hummed against each other. When we parted Sage pressed my forehead against his. “Nox, you can sleep with Dev and/or Dee without me present.” He pulled back and smiled. “I know we said it was for watching you, but with them, I know you won’t leave us. You won’t take Drake and Fae from me, you won’t keep Matt from coming here. I know that with them, we’ll be happy. Maybe one day we can all live together, all seven of us.”
I laughed, “That sounds like a really big apartment we’d have to have.”
Sage nodded. “One day. Some day.” He kissed me. “I have to get back to work. You going to the AU building?”
I nodded. “I am. I’ll bring all the boys back with me. We might be doing a family sleep over for a few nights.”
Sage grinned. “That’s fine with me. I like puppy piles.”
“Me too.” I kissed him. “Me too.”

The one thing that I’d come to expect on Thursday night was Nox cooking in my kitchen. He knew I went to the office on Thursday, and he knew I wouldn’t be home. He used his key and he would make dinner. It would be ready on the island on the bar, there would be a three-year-old running around my house like a bat outta hell and we’d settle in for a dinner and a kid friendly movie.
What I did not expect was for Nox to be in my kitchen half naked – where only boxers and an apron. He complained about the naked kitchen porn scenes – like really who cooks naked? Sitting on the island where we ate was a red lobster. I grinned at him. He was living up to his end of the bargain. He smiled at me when he saw me standing in the kitchen. “I’m sorry it took so long. I had to find the right instructions.”
I laughed at him. “I never actually expected you to cook me lobster.”
He walked around the island and wrapped his long arms around me and drew me in to kiss, “Love, I promised you lobster I’m going to make you lobster. It’s got the butter garlic dipping sauce and a good side of pasta salad with sun dried tomatoes, olives and basil in a light pesto sauce.”
I kissed him on the lips softly, he tasted like butter and garlic like he’d been tasting his own food while he cooked. I moaned a little and made Nox chuckle. “No vegetables?”
“Special occasion.” He whispered. “I intend to work off all the carbs.” He bit my bottom lip and pulled away from me, “Eat love. I want to show you something later.”
I looked around expecting him to call Drake down, but he sat down and smiled at me, “He’s with my father. I told him I wanted a night a lone with you. He said I don’t want to know what you and your lover do.”
The lobster was heaven. I’d only had lobster once, and that was at my uncle’s first wedding. I only had a small taste and I really don’t remember it. But this was melt in your mouth good. Everything on my plate was gone. And when we were done Nox cleaned up. Usually I would, but he didn’t let me lift a finger. He told me to sit down and watch a show. I didn’t I flipped channels while he finished the kitchen clean up.
Afterwards he came in wearing just his boxers and smiled at me. “Come up in ten minutes.”
I raised my eyebrow and he grinned at me. I nodded, “Alright.” We’d had some interesting nights alone these past few weeks. Nox was showing me something which meant we weren’t doing something I was prompting – or were we. I was suddenly a little afraid but my cock was hard in anticipation. Nox was very into sex. Any night I wanted to have sex he was game, I don’t think he ever said no.
Ten minutes was too long, but I waited and I ran up the stairs though I slowed down before I got to my room. Inside Nox had a box on the bed. He smiled at me. “Sage. Everything we do tonight is part of what I enjoy. But if you don’t like any of it, then we never do it again. Is that okay?”
I nodded. “Of course. You’ve been more than willing to watch with me. I think I can do this.”
He grinned at me sat down on the edge of the bed still in his boxers. “There are only three rules. 1. No hitting. No slapping, spanking, or other types, not even in the attaboy type jesters.” I nodded and the first rule, not overly surprising considering the state of his back. “2. You can touch my back, but no one else can.” I nodded again, not surprised there either. “And 3. We always use condoms. Especially if there is a woman involved.” This last one surprised me a little, but it was understandable. He continued, “I have two safe words. It’s like the stop lights. Yellow is a caution, if I say it it means I’m really close to having a panic attack or I really can’t take much more. And then there is red, which means full stop, hands off, untie me or release me from whatever bonds and the scene is over.”
I nodded biting my bottom lip, safe words were used in BSDM, bondage and pain and domination and submission. I had watched plenty of it, but I hadn’t really thought about it doing ti with Nox. Hitting seemed to be a big part of punishment I wasn’t sure how that would work.
Nox stood on the bed and attached a strap to each side post at the foot of the bed. They were just leather straps. At the foot he attached two cuffs. Nox grinned at me and he looked at me, “Do you want to try it first?”
I took a breathe and held it. He smiled at me, “You don’t have to stay, but I’d like for you to at least feel the straps against your wrists. It helps know what your partner is feeling.”
I nodded and Nox pulled me closer and undid my belt and khaki’s, “We don’t want to ruin them.” He took off the white button down as well, leaving me with my white t-shirt and boxers. He didn’t remove any of my other clothes as he pulled one hand up above my head and sliped my hand through the leather strap. “Grab here.” He showed me where and I closed my fist around it. It wasn’t so bad. He did my other wrist then knelt down and looked up at me. His brown eyes were shining and dark with lust as he looked up from his position. He smiled, “I like looking at you like this.”
I knew he meant up at me, I wasn’t thrilled with the position I was in. And I was even less thrilled when he spread my legs towards the other post. The straps cut into my wrist as I lowered closer to the ground. And when the other leg was strapped I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. Nox stood up, his hands caressing my body through the fabric of what remained of my clothes. He asked, “You okay, or do you want me to take you out of these?”
“Out.” I mummbled and he didn’t wait a moment, there was no hesitation, no begging for me to stay inside. I’d had a lover once who tried to push me into things like this. It was part of the problem with being tied up like this. I let go of one of the straps before Nox finished unstrapping me and I fell towards the ground but Nox caught me before my arm wrenched in the remainng strap.
He kissed my neck and whispered, “Legs first, then hands, it’s easier. Stand up. And you can let go.”
I did as he instructed and I would remember that next time. Nox looked at my wrists and kissed the red mark the strap had made against the one wrist. He smiled at me, “We won’t tie you up again.”
I started to protest, “But…”
Nox put a finger to my lips to silence me. “If you want to try again, you only have to ask. I won’t ask it of you again.” And he was done with it he was turning to the box and opened the lid. Inside were various oils, and lubes. There were butt plugs, and dildos. Some vibrated, others had suction cups. There was some weird glass rods and things that looked pizza cutters. Blind folds and other restraints were tucked into the side. He sat down next to the box and pulled out a device that looked like it belonged in the kitchen and put one of those glass rods in it. “Go slow with the setings at first, but I can handle the highest. It can feel good or you can use it as a punishment.” He smiled at me. “But we don’t need to explore those parts now or anytime if you don’t feel comfortable.”
Nox took my hand and and pulled me close and I sat down next to him.. His leg was warm against mine. I took his hand out and put the device on the lowest setting and held it above his skin and it sparked as he ran it over the top of his hand. He touched it to his skin and I felt him shudder in pleasure. “Would you like to feel it?”
“Isn’t that the point of this?” I asked.
He shook his head. “No, the point is for you to do these things to me. But it helps to understand the tools.”
I asked, “Did Adrian do these things to you?”
“And many other things. But what Adrian did was to teach me, not out of pleasure.”
I laughed. “Like he didn’t enjoy any of it.”]
Nox laughed, “You are right. He did enjoy it but it was to teach more so.”
I held my hand out and Nox pressed the glass tube to the top of my hand. It sent a shock to my hand and I gasped. He raised it a hairs breathe above my skin and I felt a zap. “Ouch.”
Nox pulled my hand to him and he kissed the spot that had been zapped and licked it softly, “I’m sorry, I wanted to show you the difference.”
I understood and I nodded. He turned it off and set it aside and pulled out one of the pizza cutter things out and ran it across his skin. He bit back a gasp. I offered him my hand and he smiled at me and leaned over and kissed me deeply. “You are amazing.” He said breathlessly. He ran the spikey pizza cutter thing across my skin. It pricked but he didn’t push I imagined it would hurt more the harder you pushed. He set it down in the box. “I assume you know how everything else works?”
I nodded. “I think I can figure it out.”
He smiled. “Will you tie me up, love? Experiment with the toys. Not submission, just learning what I like, what you like to do, what you don’t.”
I asked, “Anything in the box?”
He nodded and offered me his hands. I smiled and I lifted his hand to the post and he slipped his hand through the strap. I kissed his arm before moving to the other and kissed his bicep as he pushed his hand through the strap. I wanted to look at him, in all his glory. I pulled down his boxers and he smiled at me. He was hard, and leaking and I wanted to talk him in my mouth. He watched me watching him. I licked my lips and he bit his bottom one. “Mmmmmm.” I licked the length of his cock and he shuddered. “I love that reaction, Nox.”
I put his legs in the cuffs and when I stood back up Nox hung from the straps. The leather cut into his wrists and pressed white pushing the blood from the area. He gasped softly but his cock twitched at the pain. He hung his head and he hung a little lower. His feet touched the posts now, there was no pressure on them and all his weight was on his wrists. I bent down to his ear and asked, “Why do you want to hurt?”
He let go of a breath, “It’s cleansing. It’s real. I know I can make it stop.” He looked up at me with those deep brown eyes of his, his voice was breathless. “I can’t take away the emotional hurt, but I can make this mine.”
Nox used the weirdest things to cope with the mess that his life. Sometimes I wanted to stop doing these things with him. To make him find a new way to cope. But the sex was something he enjoyed. Just like jumping from the buildings. He wasn’t hurting anyone. He hung his head again.
I looked in the box and found a feather. I didn’t have to hurt him. I could make it feel better. I touched the feather to the bounds on his wrists and he shivered. The feather ran down his arm and over his chest and up the other arm. His head fell backwards exposing his neck and I ran the feather over his adam’s apple and he gurgled his acceptance of the tender touch.
I ran the feather over every part of his body. His cock twitched and was leaking. I leaned in and whispered in his ear, “Can you come just from this touch?”
He chuckled and put his head forward so he could speak easier. “If you tell me to I will.” He looked so lost in lust and desire, his eyes were dark and bright at the same time. I knew he liked to be told what to do. I smiled at him, “Come for me love.” I ran the feather over his cock and he released almost instantly. I wondered how much he’d worked himself up over this. But I remembered all the times in the past week he’d didn’t let me help him finish. I smiled at him, “You’ve been waiting for this.” I whispered against his neck. “I want to fuck you now.”
He groaned and nodded, “Yes please.”
I undid his feet and then helped him stand up straight and he removed his hands from the straps. There were red marks on his wrist and I kissed them. He smiled at me. “We’ll work on aftercare later love. I have an idea for that. Right now love fuck me.”
I did as he asked. I kissed him hard, pressing my lips to his and sucked his lip into my mouth. He moaned against my lips and his hands grabbed my hips and he pulled me hard against his body. He was a lot harder than I expected him to be. He ground against me “MMMm…” I shoved him back and he landed on his back with a oomph. I reached behind him and grabbed a box of condoms behind him and tossed me one. He watched as I torn open the pack and opened the foil. His fingers twitching beside him waiting, wanting to touch me. I slid it on my hard cock and he let out a small moan. I leaned down on top of him and pressed my body to his. He whimpered beneath me. “Soon Nox. Soon.”
I smiled against his neck and ran my fingers down his arms and over the sides and pushed his arms over his head. I whispered, “Stay.” and he hummed his acceptance. I learned early that Nox liked to be told what to do, loved to be told to be still, when to come, just the little things. I loved holding him like this. He would drown in the pleasure I gave him and be unable to touch me until I said so. He loved to touch. I loved when he touched me but he liked this. I could see why now that he’d shown me this, his love of being vulnerable. I wanted to hurt the person who made him this way. But I would take care of him. I loved him.
Nox whimpered again bringing me back to him with a smile and I sat up and pushed inside him. He groaned as I pushed inside. His cock twitched and his rolled his head back, his hands clenched above his head but he didn’t move them. His head pushed backwards and I leaned forward thrusting inside of him and he moaned.
I pushed into him again and again slowly biting his neck. He whimpered underneath me. and I pushed harder and deeper. His back arched but his hands stayed above his head. I sat up and thrust harder and faster inside of him and he let out a loud moan and muttered my name. The one simple word pushed me over the edge and I inside of him. I thrust a few more times before Nox released again. His cock spurting cum over his stomach and he shuttered. I fell down next to him. I kissed his neck and his arms and I helped him move them down. He flexed his fingers and grinned at me. I whispered, “Touch me, please.” His arms wrapped around me and his fingers splayed against my back as he pulled me close. I hummed against his skin and closed my eyes. We’d sleep like this and he’d wake up with his alarm and off for a run before I would even know he was gone.

I took a shower. I got dressed and went down stairs. It all seemed so surreal after what had happened. I felt numb but I needed to see the boys. All three of them. I found Dorian sitting on the couch flipping channels on Sage’s television. “What you stil doing here?”
He smiled at me, “I figured you could use someone to talk to since you aren’t seeing Margo anymore.” Dorian turned the idiot box off and turned towards me and patted the chair next to him. “Talk to me Nox.”
“I don’t even know where to start, Dorian.” I said as I sat down next to him. I leaned against him like I had many times over the years and he wrapped his arm around my shoulder. “I don’t know what to make of all this.”
“All of what?” he asked to coax more words to flow.
“Sage. And Dev. And Dee. Me, us. Any of it. The boys. Garrett. Margo. Hell my father. I just don’t know Dorian.”
He pressed his lips to my temple. “Start where it makes sense.”
“Nothing makes sense. I want my boys. I want to hold them right now. Keep them safe. I failed last night.”
Dorian chuckled. “I don’t think you failed. You can’t keep them from danger no matter how hard you try.”
“But it’s my fault.” My eyes burned with unshed tears.
“It maybe, but that thing is responsible for hurting the boys. You didn’t tell it to. From what Devin says you were working on saving yourself. Which I think was a necessary step, don’t you?”
“Not if it means my boys get hurt.”
Dorian laughed. “You’ve been a father for a few months and the children aren’t even your blood and you would do anything for them. You are a much better man than I am.”
I shook my head. “No I’m not.”
“I wasn’t much younger than you when you came into my life, Nox. You were a scared little boy and I never loved you. Not the way you do Drake. Not when you needed it most.” Dorian’s voice was filled with regret and sorry. It made my heart ache.
“You were what I needed, when I needed it, Dorian.”
“No my boy, I wasn’t. You needed to be loved after your mother threw you away. I didn’t.”
I shrugged. “But you cared for me. You were what I needed to get through. Always a strong shoulder to cry on. I might have needed love, Dorian. But you were what I needed when I needed it. I don’t care that you didn’t love me then. I’m okay with who I am because of you.”
Dorian shook his head. “Always amaze me. I do love you, as much as my own son.”
I grinned up at him and placed a kiss on his cheek. “I know. Let me say good-bye to Sage and you can walk me back to the AU building.”

I woke alone in bed. There was no warmth other than the comforter piled on top of me. I shifted to my back and I heard movemnt to my left. I turned my head and saw Dorian sitting there. “You scared everyone, my boy.”
“Is everyone okay?” I asked.
Dorian nodded. “Drake is fine. Deborah says the cut healed quickly while she was standing there watching what happened. Faelen is having a panic attack because he changed. Sage is working. Devin is making coffee for the two of us. He called in sick, refused to go to work while you lay unconscious.”
“How long have I been out?”
“It’s 2pm now. Sage called me and told me you dropped after killing a creature.” Dorian moved over to me and placed his hand on my head. “No one saw what it was but you, Nox. Can you tell me what you saw?”
“It was a creature. Give me m notebook.” I sat up and nodded towards the drawer he was sitting next to.
Dorian handed me the spiral sketchbook with the pencil embedded in the spine. “It’s not under your pillow.” He commented I took it from his graceful hands.
“Sage says it gives me nightmares.”
Dev came in bearing two cups of coffee. He smiled when he saw me and handed Dorian a cup. “I’ll go make another.”
I shook my head. “I’m alright.”
Dorian offered me his. “I’ll go make my own. You can have this one.” I took the black coffee from Dorian and smiled. “I’ll be back in a little while.”
I sipped the coffee and set it on the nightstand and started drawing. Dev sat next to me on the bed sipping his own coffee. His inky black hair was disheveld and I just wanted to run my hands through it and make it even more so. He snickered at me and placed a kiss on my neck. “I’m going to go tell Sage you are awake, and call Dee tell her the good news.”
I nodded. I was left alone in the dim light of Sage’s bedroom – our bedroom. And drew what I remembered of the monster that had attacked Drake and Faelen. I remembered the red glowing eyes. I manipulated the make up of the pencil and the color turned red as I colored in the eyes. They were flat against the paper but they felt like they were boring into my soul. It was the same eyes I saw every night. The same that had made me bloody only yesterday.
That thing and Garrett were connected. I don’t know how, and I don’t know why, but they were connected.
Sage walked into the room and flipped on the light and snuck into his room where he kept the video feeds. My watcher boyfriend had been watching me sleep. He smiled at me as he whispered, “I wasn’t recording.”
He wrapped his arms around me and I nodded. “I know. You didn’t want to leave but you had to I get it. Did you tell Dev?”
He nodded against my neck. “I told him how to turn it on, I couldn’t stand not being up here with you.” He pressed a light kiss to my temple. “Is that what hurt the boys?”
I nodded. “Yeah. And I think Garrett sent it to me. I think it’s a nightmare. I’ll have to speak with Ant about it, he’s the only one I know who knows about the old monsters of our legends.”
Dev laughed, “You mean there are things you don’t know about?”
I looked up and smiled at him. “Dee said hi, I’m glad you are awake. And she told me to hit you hard in the arm. But I’m not going to.” He sat down on the edge of the bed and pressed a kiss to my cheek.
“The Venatori don’t hunt legendary monsters. At least not most of us. There are specialized Venatori who do. They aren’t like us. They are savage and viscious and they kill whatever stands in their way, human, monster, supernatural. We call them Metus. Latin for fear and dread. Those that become metus are worse than the people I grew up with. They are like the serial killers of all things. If we find a metus in our territory we usually send an army of hunters to kill it. Metus don’t care what damage they do.” I knew I was scaring them. I meant to. Metus were real. I knew old creatures existed. This was old had to be.
Dev pulled me close and hugged me. Sage wrapped his arms around both of us and spoke softly, “If it scares you that much I don’t think I want to know more, Nox. You’ll keep us safe.”
I sighed. “I’ll do what I can Sage.” I felt safe in their arms but I had to go talk to Garrett. “I need to talk to Garrett.”
Sage shook his head. “No. I don’t want you going near him.”
Dev agreed. “I don’t think I do either, if he sends things with glowing eyes after you.”
“I have to know why.”
Sage sighed. “Be careful Nox. I have to get back to work. I’m glad you are okay. I love you.” The last he whispered in my ear then pressed a kiss to my mouth.
Dev and I watched Sage leave the room. He was tapping away at his phone before he even left the room. I asked, “Did what we do work?”
Dev smiled. “Yeah. I think that’s why it came after us. Or after the weakest link.” Dev touched my temple with both hands and he projected an image into my head. My breath caught but he pressed his lips to mine and I relaxed into the image. He was showing me my shield. He whispered against my lips, “It’s beautiful. Shimmering with reds, golds, blues, and greens.” He let go of my head and I let go of the breath I’d been holding. “I’ve never seen anything like it Nox. Not a black vein in sight. I’ll check it every night for a while. I’d almost like you to spend the night away from us.”
I shook my head. “Not anytime soon.”
Dev nodded in agreement. “I agree. Right now you need to protect your family and I get that. And I don’t think Sage is going to let you out of his sight for that long. Call me later?”
I smiled. “I can do that. You going?”
“Yeah. I have to get to work too. Dee said she’d call later check on the boys after school.” He pressed another kiss to my lips and I let out a soft moan. He laughed. “You are so easy pretty boy.”
I grinned at him. “Only for you.”
“Is that another collective you?” Dev grinned.
“Yeah I think so. I…” Dev pressed his finger to my lips and interrupted my words.
“Not yet pretty boy. Not yet. But I know.” He kissed my forehead and walked away. “Call me pretty boy.”
I listened to him walk down the stairs and close the basement door behind him. He was saying goodbye to Sage. And when I thought I might be jealous I found out I really wasn’t. Maybe there was room for all of them.

AJ hit 50K yesterday for Camp NaNoWriMo. The Children of Morpheus is not done yet. We are nearing the end but I’m sure AJ has a few more surprises in store for me. The story so far is going to go into the second week of August and likely beyond that since not done yet.
But next month you’ll get more current stuff from me as I’ll be doing the Random Music Video Prompt on a daily basis.
After the Children of Morpheus we’ll get a side project AJ will be writing when done with this. A me that’s not me. Gonna post those in a one a day fashion and going forward too with the next story of the Ascendant. AJ’s gonna be planning that while we work on the side project. It’s called Once Upon a Dream. Maybe one day AJ will share the other me that isn’t me in Your Fantasy. But that’s an actual possibility of being published if AJ decides to publish something so we’ll see.
Upon Completion AJ will ebookify the Children of Morpheus too but it’ll be typo and messy as they are here. But they will eventually be edited. I hope. AJ hopes. AJ might tackle that after the whole series of Ascendant is completed. Not that my story ends when Ascendant does. It just changes

I shuddered and left my boyfriend to get dressed while I ran the shower as hot as I could stand. My mind glided over the past night, remembering the events as if there were happening to someone else. Like I’d watched it all happen.
I’d known what was going on despite the battle for my self. I heard the Venatori crash through the windows of the warehouse once Ye Pan had crushed my body with his power. My father had to feel the power.
I remember looking up just in time to watch the muzzle flash of my father’s gun go off. He’d fired at Ye Pan and I watched it travel through the air. The power of the dragon before me slowed it. The air around it solidified until it stood feet away from him hanging in mid air.
And then his command puppeted me towards my father and the others. Walker among them. There was a knock at the bathroom door but Sage didn’t wait for me to say anything as he stepped inside closing the door behind him. “You okay? You won’t have enough time to eat.”
I nodded. “I’d gotten lost in the memory. That wasn’t good.” I turned off the water and grabbed the towel that hung inside and dried off before stepping out into the cool air of my bathroom. Sage set clothes down on the counter.
Sage smiled. “Get dressed. Hurry so you can at least eat something.”
The door opened, and I smelled coffee and I did as Sage instructed. I didn’t think it was his suggestion more than the desire for coffee. But I had a feeling just letting Sage run the show for now was why I wasn’t panicking about sleeping in, about not hearing my text messages go off. By the lost memories. There was much to trouble my mind. But Sage took care of it, took care of me. I smiled as I applied the eye liner and then stepped out of my bathroom ready for the rest of my day.
Sage grinned. “I like that shirt.”
I had paid no attention to what he’d chosen for me. I looked down to see the skeleton climbing out of a rib cage with the fires of hell behind it. It was one of the few long sleeved t-shirts I owned. I chuckled at the irony. “That’s how I feel today.” I wrapped my arms around him and kissed his neck and whispered in his ear, “Thanks to you.”
Sage laughed and pulled me to sit next to him. “Eat. I did nothing, Nox. I was just here.”
“You have no idea what you did, Sage. But you did more than just be in this room with me.” I opened the Styrofoam box that Sage had brought and found a large omelet of roasted vegetables and sausage. I looked at him, “You ordered ahead?”
He laughed. “I did. Apparently Ms. Shelia caters to a lovely young man who likes to cook with her.” He ate a few spoonfuls of his own oatmeal. “I think she has a crush on you.”
I grinned at him. “Why wouldn’t she?” I ate a few bites of my omelet before I added. “She kept me fed during some pretty rough times when bullies decided I shouldn’t eat for a week of breakfasts in a row.”
Sage wrapped his arm around him. “We’ll I’ll make sure the bullies leave you alone now.”
I laughed. “I don’t have to play nice now. The last time Aaron decided my breakfast belonged on the floor and I was a punching bag, he got in one good shot before he was lying on the floor choking. He ran away with his tail between his legs. Him and his buddies. I think that had more to do with Walker than me but I’ll take it.”
“My boyfriend, the big bully.” Sage laughed.
I stuck my tongue out at him.
Sage raised his eyebrow at my action. “You remember what I said about that.”
I grinned at him. “I do.”
“I don’t think it’s quite the reprimand it should be.” Sage grinned.
“I’m okay with that.”
Sage shook his head and finished his breakfast and his coffee before he swiveled in his stool and watched me eat my food.
When I put the last of my omelet into my mouth Sage turned me in my bar stool, my knees were on the outside of his. Sage stood up and put his hands on my shoulder. “Stick it out again.”
I gave him a look of defiance but I obeyed after a moment. I stuck my tongue out him even more childishly than before. Sage chuckled before he put his lips around it and sucked on it. It tightened things below my belt. I hummed in pleasure and Sage bit and my eyes opened wide in surprise. He chuckled against my lips as he let go and licked my lips. “You always taste good.”
I laughed. “I try.”
“We should go. I’ll walk you downstairs. You gonna be okay?”
I nodded. “Yeah, I’ll be fine. Thank you for your help.”
Sage pulled away. “There will come a point when you need to take control back, you know?”
I nodded. “Soon as we walk out the door. I’ll be the adult I’m supposed to be. If that’s all right with you.”
Sage laughed. “Let’s go. I can be whatever you need, whenever you need it, Nox.”
I joined Sage and pulled him against me. “I’ll be whatever you need me to be, too. Just let me know what that is.”
Sage grinned. “We are doing pretty good, I think.”
I kissed him in agreement. His lips were soft and warm and I wanted nothing more than to stay here in his arms but the Dragon Council wouldn’t wait on me. I broke the kiss and smiled at him. I was so far down the rabbit hole there was no coming back up. I only hoped I didn’t scare him away. There was no I could handle it.
I stepped out from between the bar stools and grabbed my phone and keys. Sage was already standing in the open doorway leading into the hall waiting on me. “I’ll go check on Drake. Make sure he gets to school on time. I like your father. He’s good with Drake. The three of us spent time together while you were out doing your thing.”
I took a deep breath and tried not to sound angry. I’d wished Dae’lin had stayed out of it. But family was important to Sage – more so than the family I wanted to have – he wanted everyone to be happy which included my relationship with my father. Sage must have gathered my thoughts because he took my hand in his and squeezed. “I know you are trying. He knows too.” He smiled at me. “Did you know he has a standing monthly appointment with Dr. Silverman to discuss you.”
I shook my head. “I’m sure it’s just an excuse to take her out for lunch.”
Sage shook his head. “He said you’d say that. But he said it was in her office. Officially recorded. And the discussion notes are in your files if you ever wanted to know what they said about you.”
“I know. I’ve skipped past them. I don’t want to know what other people tell Margo. If it’s important enough for me to know she tells me. And if it’s not, then whatever they are trying to do to help I see in the real world.”
Sage grinned. “So if I spoke to Dr. Silverman about you, you’d not read it.”
I stopped in the hallway and looked at him. “I’d….No.” I shook my head. “I wouldn’t read it. I don’t plan on keeping things from you. But I’m difficult to live with. You can ask Jace or Dorian and even Dae’lin. I don’t want to know when you need to vent because I’ve been a dick, or I said something I didn’t mean. Or because you are just plain fed up with how I react to stress. I can’t say it’s not tempting because it is. To know what someone feels about me for real in their own words unfiltered by my needs it’s comforting and scary all at the same time. We’ll work this through. If it doesn’t work out, I don’t want to know all the ways I fucked up.”
Sage sighed and walked pulling me along with him. “I think that’s the hardest part in all of this. You are the first person to put yourself down.”
“Years of practice.” I said.
Sage stopped and pushed me up against the wall pinning my shoulders to it. My pulse quickened and I could feel my pores dripping with sweat. I swallowed hard, and I saw the look of concern deepen as he saw the fear coursing through my body. He shook his head and then kissed me deeply. He pushed me further into the wall. If he’d had super human strength, the dry wall would be damaged. But Sage was just human. A human with human magic but still just human.
He pressed his body against mine and he framed my head with his forearms against the wall. I had no choice but to look into those big blue eyes of his. I saw sorrow and hope, happiness and despair. Sage was conflicted. “I need you to do two things for me.”
I nodded. And Sage continued. “You won’t say anything bad about yourself. I don’t even want you to think it.”
I sighed and dropped my gaze from his eyes. I gave him a slight nod before he continued. “You won’t let anyone step all over you. That includes yourself.”
My eyes flicked up to meet his as I asked, “What do you expect me to do?”
“Stand up for yourself. You aren’t a child anymore, Nox. No one treats you like dirt. You have the ear of the most powerful vampire in the world. You beat one of the oldest dragons. Not only did you beat him, Nox, you over threw his control of you.”
“Who told you that?”
“I saw it all happen. Walker and the others all had video feeds.”
I felt deflated. I saw the memories floating out. The weakness of my mind – the control that had been taken from me. Sage kissed me hard and brought me back from them. “No.” Sage bit out in a cold white heat I hadn’t expected from him. “You don’t beat yourself up. There is nothing wrong with you. Shit happens. It wasn’t your fault.”
Sage pulled away from me and took my hand in his and pulled me towards the elevator and down to the conference room level. He got off the glass death trap with me and turned me towards him and dusted off my shoulders as if I had something on them, straightened a fake tie at my neck and kissed my cheek. “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
I couldn’t help but smile at his joke. “Casablanca.” I grinned.
“You’ve seen that?” Sage asked.
I shook my head. “No but I know Humphrey Bogart when I hear it.”
Sage grinned. “We’ll have to watch it together one day – soon.”
I nodded, “Any time with you is well spent. Thank you, Sage.” Three little words sat at the tip of my tongue and I held them back. I wasn’t ready to utter them and I was certain Sage wasn’t ready to hear them.
He smiled at me and pushed me off toward the large conference room. “Good luck,” he called out after me.
