I just left my love at security and now I’m sitting in an airport terminal waiting my flight. The problem with being me, well one problem anyway is I hate being late. I have to be early or exactly on time. The latter is very hard to accomplish when the world doesn’t follow my rules. When it was just me I could make my appointments, but when I have to use other people, do other things with other people. I have learned to be early in most things. I need to be early so I have more than an hour before boarding the plane, which is also plenty of time to relax and not freak out about the plane ride about to take. I hate flying. The smells are so powerful. The people are so close. We are so high from the ground. Dae’lin made sure I had an aisle seat. But I wasn’t sure how much that was going to help with so many people around and all the boys we are taking with us.

Right now I’m alone in the terminal. Oh wait, here comes the rest of the team. I expected everyone to sit someplace else. What I didn’t expect was for Nate, my nephew to be with the bunch or for Jason’s nephew to either for that matter, Chris sat across the aisle from me while Dylan sat down next to me. I should pause be social…

I spent the night with Sage and for the first time since I’ve slept here with him I’m up at 4:30 in the morning. Chalk it up to anxiety, more so than nightmares. I woke up, well I got up so I wouldn’t keep Sage up. I have to be on a plane at 11:29am. I’m so not looking forward to that. I’m not looking forward to being away from Sage for 30 days. This is such a weird experience. I don’t think Sage and I have been apart for more than a few days. I have lunch with him most days, and breakfast some mornings. And every Friday night I cook for him in his wonderful kitchen.

Last night we ate as a proper family, the three of us. I even let Drake have ice cream before he had his dinner. Sage wasn’t happy. But the little smile on the dragon’s face was more than worth it. And Sage was happy with dinner itself so it was all good in the end.

And after Drake went to bed I played with my hair. I couldn’t decide what to do. I could be normal and leave it brown or just the blonde tips. But then I don’t think I’d feel comfortable in my own skin. It’s bad enough to camp out in the dirt and grime, but I like being me. But I’m not afraid to get dirty. I like camping as long as I can be me. So I decided I would do variations of green and go with a camo look. It looks pretty cool for the whole hiking thing. It might be cool on a club night, but I don’t think I want to do it often, it’s not really me. I like the bright colors and since I met Sage I liked to keep it blue.

My nail polish is black, and I have a few bottles I’m taking with me – in case the bottles break. Why don’t I magic that like my hair? Because it turns my nails that color, and that’s not healthy and not quite so easy to change then.

I have a few change of clothes – not enough for 30 days, but hey I’m a guy. And I can wash in a stream. Or if I get really pressed for grime, I can hike back to the Boulder compound and do laundry in a real washing machine and dryer. Though as a student that’s considered cheating. I could clean it with my ability. And I’ll probably do that a few times too. But there is only so much my ability can do.

I’m sure I’m up for other reasons than this damned trip, but at least I’m not up because of my nightmares. I have nightmares every night I don’t spend with Sage. He is my link to a good nights sleep and I treasure each night I get with him. And I will miss him, but this is good for me – good for us. I wonder if I’m too much to for Sage sometimes. If I’m a burden. I take more than I give. I try to give back. I try, but I’m not good at this. I love him. I never thought I could love someone so much. I will do better. I will.

I’m going to go for my last run before the trip. Then I’m going to make my love his favorite breakfast and take my little dragon to school and then head to the airport. I’m not looking forward to this – I hate flying. I HATE flying.

Sage found the journal I kept when I left home for the first time. The journal that Margo made me keep while I hunted with Michaela. The whole I couldn’t talk to her like I could while I lived in the AU Building. It helped. Since I’ve not been to see Margo since I found out she was a dragon, or that she killed my twin sister as a baby, or tried to kill me, Sage thinks it’s a good idea to do this now – particularly since I won’t be able to talk to him as easily being away.

Ironically I’ll be going back to the Rocky Mountains, where I grew up, where I went with Michaela, and where my mother died later. Where everything begins and ends for me. The irony of it all is not lost on me. Friday, Dae’lin told me that I was going to go out with one of the survival groups and be a teacher. Which okay I can handle, but then she told me who I was going with – Dylan Reed.

Just fucking great! What I needed was the one guy I avoided for most of my life in the Academy. Sage laughed when I told him I was avoiding him and why. I avoided Dylan so he could avoid me better. The last thing the uber popular swim captain wanted was some gay groupie following him around. Particularly one who kissed him.

Dylan proceeded to give me a beat down after that so I guess we were even. But I avoided him to avoid further damage to my body.

Anyway, back to why I’m writing this. I’m going to be away from Sage for 30 days straight. This is the going to be the longest I’ve been away from him. And the longest I’ve gone without therapy my entire life. This is to be my therapy for the next thirty days. Except this time my boyfriend souped up my phone with his awesome technopath ability. He says I can use the internet anywhere in the world now. I suppose he’d know. He says the cell service might suck but my internet won’t.

And in that vein he set up this blog for me to keep a journal of all the things that happen to me while I’m out. He also set up Twitter and Instagram so I can keep things going in micro bursts and images internet style. I’m not sure how I feel about sharing my life with the world. But I trust Sage. So I’ll do this.

  • Passport

I have never been out of the United States. I suppose I would need a passport to do that, but when you are friends with a shadow walking Vampire who was born in Italy 800 plus years ago I guess I could go anywhere in the world I wanted. Ant travels all around the world hunting his kind who have done bad things. He grew up in Europe. He came to the New World with his mother when there was a big exodus of vampires on boats trying to get away from council rule.

I’d love to see the world and not have to hunt anything while I’m there. To see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Eiffel Tower, The collesium, Big Ben – all those classic sights everyone wants to see.

I’d love to learn to cook from reknowned chefs in Europe too. I’d be sous chef for a week and learn everything I could. I’d probably hit ever restaurant in Europe and have to walk my way from country to country just so I wouldn’t get fat!

That actually sounds like a perfect vacation – backpacking across Europe! AJ has a new idea for a story… OMG, I’m in trouble!

  • Camp Starts Tomorrow

Tomorrow will start a month long adventure. So I figured I’d better let you in on the basics before AJ starts telling the story.

Daily Prompt may be included into posts if the topic fits where the story is at on that present moment. Hopefully I can wrangle it in so I can keep the daily post connection going for the month of April. If not follow me so you don’t lose an episode of my latest adventures.

The Last Phoenix started on June 19, 2015 and lasted for about 5 days.

Human Side of the Family took place on July 4th of that same year.

Darwynn’s Law will start roughly August 10 of 2015. I will date each piece (and approximate times written), but unfortunately I can’t do that with Twitter and Instagram so ignore the dates and go with the order, but I will post an order of posts, tweets and pictures on a page here so everything is nicely ordered and collected.

  • A Big Mess – Little Dragon

I watched him walk back towards the train station. He turned around twice before he turned the corner. I waved at him each time and when he disappeared around the corner. Once inside, I headed up the stairs, taking them two at a time.

My breathing was elevated, but it was nothing I wasn’t used to already when I reached the right floor. Dae’lin was waiting for me outside the conference room. We didn’t have an interrogation room because we don’t normally interrogate our marks. I was the only one who brought them in. Even then we didn’t interrogate them. This was different.

The female dragon was sitting in the glass enclosed room looking rather broken until she saw me standing outside then she perked up. I could see the pattern’s Dae’lin was using to hold her bonds.

    “Can I go in?” I asked Dae’lin.

“That’s why you are here,” she smiled at me though it didn’t reach her dark eyes.

I walked into the room and her eyes went wide as I sat down and the bonds around her released. I waved at Dae’lin. “You will stay put or I’ll have to put them back on.” I wrapped her up in a weave of air in that moment. When she froze I let her go.

    “Got it?” I asked.

    She nodded.

“My name is Nox. You are?”

    “Naomi.” she said.

    I nodded. “What’s your son’s name?”

    She smiled. “Drake.”

    I laughed. “Ironic?”

    “I suppose. Gordon liked it.”

“The man with you?” I asked.

    She nodded.

“He’s going down for your robberies you know that, right?”

    She frowned.

“Your son? Tell me why you freaked out when I said to let the dragons come get him.”

“He’s half human. You know, damn well, they’ll kill him. It’s the law.”

I grinned. “And yet you are robbing banks and breaking human law. See we have a problem. If I can promise you protection for you son, will you tell me about what The Dragon wants.”

    Naomi nodded.

I waved my hand and Dorian came in. “Dorian, can I protect the half dragon boy?”

“Only way you can keep him from the dragons is to put him under Venatori protection. No one here will put him under their protection.”

“Can I put him under my protection?”

Dorian smiled. “You are of legal consenting age, so yes.”

“How do I protect him?” I asked. I knew the answer, but I wanted Naomi to understand.

“You could adopt him. It would be easiest.” Dorian put papers on the table. “I had the papers drawn up. The Dragon Council will not take him from you, he’d become one of us like a human would.”

“And all I have to do is sign the paperwork?”

“And the parents of the boy if they both survive.” Dorian pushed the papers to Naomi.

She looked at me. “You will personally protect my son?”

“That’s what I’m proposing if you tell them about The Dragon.” I stood up and smiled. Dorian handed her a pen.

Naomi signed the paper and set the pen down. I signed the paper after her. “Dae’lin, she’s all yours. If she doesn’t tell you everything. Tear up the paperwork.” Naomi gasped as I walked out the door. Dorian had followed me.

I turned to look at my friend and mentor with a smile, “How did you know?”

He grinned at me, “I have known you since you were five, Nox. You don’t think I learned anything at all about you?”

“That’s not it. I get that you know me, how did you know that would satisfy her? You knew I’d sign the paper, but you knew nothing more than that she wanted to keep her son safe. That paperwork had my name as guardian printed on it. Meaning you knew what I’d do.”

Dorian smiled. “I knew you would protect that child with everything you had. And I knew without a shadow of a doubt you would not let that child grow up like you did – alone and parent-less. And I knew you were ready to be a father. What I hadn’t gathered was that you were ready to be an adult.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked. We headed towards the stairs, Dorian was one of the few people who always took the stairs with me. He disliked the fear in my eyes, even though I rode the glass elevator.

Dorian chuckled at me as we started up the stairs. “That you actually wanted to settle down. I figured I’d be doing a lot of babysitting while you went out at night to find a new coping mechanism to satisfy your desire for human companionship.”

“You’ve been talking too much to Margo, Dorian.”

Dorian laughed. It echoed in the stair well as we walked up the few flights of stairs to the Academy. Dorian never asked me where I was going, I think he knew already.

“Will you tell Margo of your blue-eyed boy tomorrow?” Dorian asked.

“Of course. There is a lot to tell. And not just about him.”

Dorian touched my arm, and we stopped in the middle of the stairs. “I’m proud of you. Not only do you stand up for what you believe in, you carry it through. You…”

I smiled at Dorian. “I got it, you don’t have to say it and make it all mushy and uncomfortable.”

“Your father is proud of you, too.” Dorian said with a smile as we continued back up to the Academy. I wished to ask the little dragon if he wanted to stay with me. He had to wait until he was under my care, but I didn’t want him to freak out either. But the subject of my father made me frown.

“He has a funny way of showing it.” I laughed.

Dorian nodded. “He never showed home much he cared as a father. I do not regret keeping the secret, Nox. You needed a father, but Kai wasn’t going to be the father you needed.”

    “And you were?” I asked.

Dorian shook his head. “No. I never wanted to be a father to you. You were my charge. I cared for you in only that manner at first. It’s why I missed Garrett. You were the first child I’d had custody of in the legal sense. I was not the parent you needed anymore than Kai was.”

I smiled. “But you and Margo were the guardians I got. I’m the man I am because of your direction. I like who I am. So don’t be so hard on yourself. I’m not a complete screw up.”

Dorian laughed. “Some would beg to differ.”

“Some always will.” I stopped and hugged Dorian. He had frozen when I wrapped my arms around his shoulders but he relaxed and let me, he even wrapped his arms around me. I felt the complete urge to pull away, but I didn’t. I was learning to let people in.

Dorian was chuckling when he let me go. “Sage, has known you what? Three days, and already the scared little boy is retreating into the man he became.”

    I grinned. “I’m learning. I’m trying.”

Dorian nodded. “Don’t fall too far down the rabbit hole too fast. Climbing out will not be as easy as falling.”

I laughed. “I know, but I think I already fell all the way down and I have to learn to climb back out.” I added as we climbed the stairs. “I’ve told him things, shown him things only you and Margo know. He knows about my nightmares. He’s seen the damage. And the funny thing is, his life is as messed up as mine. His parents died. Sage was separted from his brother. He bounced around foster homes because he was a terror, which was likely his untrained technopathy. He got caught by a good FBI agent who took him in and became a loving father. But that man is also a wolf.”

Dorian’s eyes went wide with the knowledge, “Dominic Olmos’ group?” I shook my head and Dorian relaxed. “Hell’s Kitchen at least is friendly to you. Sheridan is a good man.”

Dorian knew what Adrian had done for me as a kid. Dorian hadn’t liked it but when Margo had agreed with him Dorian’s opinion didn’t matter. “So Sage?…”

“Did you know I was part of the pack?” I asked Dorian.

“Adrian has always considered you family. I assumed he brought you in for your protection. You didn’t know?”

I shook my head. “I was thirteen when Adrian first found me. I didn’t understand a lot then.”

“You don’t feel the pack then? Humans always do. Or those whom we’ve spoken to in the past.”

“Sage does.” I answered. “But I don’t. I feel their energy when I’m close but like now I don’t feel connected to them.” I blurted, “I gave Sage my power.”

“Why?” Dorian asked in shocked wonder.

“Because I needed him to have it. He needs the power to protect himself if word ever got out that he’s dominant over me. They’ll have to go through me to get at him now.”

“You always surprise me, Nox. Always. I’m surprised you gave up control so easily.”

I laughed. “Dorian, I don’t want to be in control. I control it so I don’t freak the fuck out. If someone else wants the control, they can have it.”

“He’s willing to control everything, Nox?”

I shook my head. “He doesn’t control everything..”

“You can’t be passive in your relationship, Nox.” Dorian warned.

“I know. I have a lot to work on in a relationship. Worry about whether Sage likes Mexican shouldn’t be one of them. And you know I’ll freak out making the plans – the change alone is gonna kill me, the planning?” I sighed. “Besides, he likes telling me what to do. He spoke with Adrian after I’d been with his friend.”

Dorian shook his head and opened the door to the landing of the Academy where Drake was being held. The school was just as I remembered it. The halls, the smell – especially the smells. So much of my anxiety was linked up in smells I could feel the stress just filling my bones. I took a deep breath and focused on what I should be doing – meeting my potential new roommate.

He was more than that, but right now we didn’t know each other. One step at a time.

Dorian lead me down the hall to the toddler enclosures. They were rooms with half walls where the kids played with toys while their teachers were teaching other classes. It was more daycare than actual teaching at this age. And nearly every child of Venatori between the ages of 8 weeks and 4 years old was in these walls at the same time.

If you wanted to wipe the future of the Venatori off the planet, you only had to blow up one building. This one. There were strict measure in place to prevent a near extinction level event like that. Short of planes flying into the building we we’re good. Though New York City’s record for flying planes into building was pretty tarnished thanks to the events of 9/11. That was one fucked up day!

I was 9 the day the Twin Towers fell. It had happened across town, but I remember the world collapsing around us. The shake of the ground as they fell. The panic of the City, and the brotherhood it had inspired afterwards. All of it etched into my small mind. That event helped fuel my discomfort in flying. I’ve flown once after that and it was pure terror. I felt like I was five years old again. When I came back to New York City to work, I drove back. I’ve not driven a car since then either – but that’s not out of fear – that’s out of why the fuck would I want to when I can walk anywhere I need to or hop a bus or train and get there without having to deal with traffic myself. No stress is my way of life.

Dorian tapped my shoulder, and I turned into the room he’d indicated. My mentor knew me too well. I smiled at him and he led me through the hall to where Drake was partioned off from the rest of the classes. The half door was painted orange, and I frowned. I looked at Dorian and he only nodded.

The orange door meant these kids were potential fire-starters, or they were. Inside five kids played. Drake looked no different from any other toddler until he looked up at me and sniffed the air. Dorian chuckled. “He reminds me of you.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“You use to do the same thing every time I walked in the room. You don’t remember?” He was watching me watch Drake.

I shook my head. “But, I guess, I did it. I know I always, even now, smell you before I see you.” I grinned at Dorian, “And I mean that in the best possible way.”

“I know. Cinnamon and vanilla – I smell like cookies to you.” He chuckled.

“That’s not how I thought of it – the best part of apple pie.”

“You hate apple pie.” Dorian said as he frowned at me.

“I hate eating it, the smells however are very hard to make me see the evil that is apple pie.” I was frowning now – the bad memories overriding the good ones always happened when apple pie came up.

A little girl who couldn’t be over six looked up at me. “Why don’t you like apple pie?”

The answer was simple, but how do you tell a child you hate apple pie because your mother made it and it was the only good memory you had of a bad mother. So I told a half truth. “It brings up bad memories.”

Dorian added in my mother’s defense, “And a singular good one. Tell them.”

I sighed. “When I was younger than you, my mother made apple pies all the time. I remember the smell of the crust baking in the oven before she would do anything else. The clean crisp scent of the apples cooking down in the vanilla and cinnamon.”

Another little boy looked up at me and waved his hands at me urgently. The same girl grinned and said, “Joey says that sounds like a good memory.”

I nodded. “It is. But all the bad things my mother did afterwards kinda ruined the whole thing.”

Another boy asked, “What she do that was so bad?”

I looked to Dorian, and he nodded. He leaned over and whispered, “They all have troubles too. Tell them.”

I sighed. “My mother had been out. She’d been hunting, and I was excited to see my mother, and my Nanny was sick so I made myself cereal. I made a mess. My mother came in and she was angry. She shook me and I was afraid. I was five when my ability first came in that moment. I watched as the curtains caught fire out of my fear.”

I looked past the children at the far wall and I could see the flames rising higher and higher in my minds-eye. “My mother rushed for the fire extiquisher and put it out. I was staring. Afraid of her and the fire and I didn’t know what was going on. My mother threw the red tube at me missing my head. She yelled at me, spat at me, called me a monster and sent me to my room.”

I remembered picking up the little red dragon that was my only true friend and holding him tigh. “That evening my mother packed my bag. And early the next morning she was dragging me on to a plane. I was crying and dragging my feet and it only made my mother worse. I freaked out on the plane so bad my mother had to give me medicine that knocked me out. When I woke up I was waiting at the airport terminal. That was when I met Mr. Dorian for the first time. He smelled like cinnamon and vanilla. He made me feel safe. I needed that then.”

Drake looked up at me and smiled. “You smell safe.”

I smiled. “Do I? What do I smell like?”

    He frowned, “Like Mama.”

“Why are you sad?” I asked him.

    “I miss Mama.”

I nodded. “I bet you do. I missed mine too when she left me with Dorian.”

“Did she come back?” Drake asked.

I sighed and shook my head. “No, Drake, my mother didn’t love me like your mama loves you. She asked me to take care of you for her while she’s not with you. Will that be okay?”

    Drake smiled. “Go now?”

I shook my head. “After school. You can come home with me, okay?” I looked at Dorian and he nodded, “The paperwork was pushed through this morning without the signatures.”

I grinned at him. “You know me well.”

Dorian smiled. “I knew even if she doesn’t tell us about The Dragon you’d take him in. Without a shadow of a doubt.”

I grinned down at Drake. “I will come and get you when you get out. If I’m busy, Mr. Dorian will pick you up and take you to his house and I will get you there, okay?”

He nodded. “Play now.” I nodded in return and Drake went off to play with his friends. I waved at the five little ones and Drake waved back.

“So which one was your son Dorian?” I grinned at him as we walked away.

    “How did you guess?”

“I know you you as well as you know me. You were comfortable walking in to the kiddie rooms. No one questioned you being there.”

“The little red head. His name is Aidan. He wasn’t planned.”

I laughed. “Obviously not. You don’t like women, Dorian, so how does one accidentally have a baby? I’d sure as hell like to know how that worked out for you.”

Dorian sighed. “You remember those six months I was out of town?”

I nodded. “Yeah, that was like five years ago. They’d been hounding you.”

“I left to decide if I could preform. I hooked up, as you’d say, with a human girl. Accidents happened, but she failed to inform me before I told her I was gay. That any relationship would fail because I was incapable of making her happy. After Aidan was born, her mother found my contact in her phone and sent me a nasty email. I’ve been sending her money since. When Stella lost her job a few months back, I arranged for her to get a job here.”

I frowned, but I understood. “Taste like shit when it happens to you, huh?”

Dorian nodded. “I know you forgive me for not telling you about your father, but yes it does. Stella is having issues with the whole Venatori life style, but both you and I know Aidan needs to be here.”

“So what’s up with the rest of the kids then?”

“The twins – Joey is deaf so the whole care thing is difficult, but since his sister can speak with him she’s here, though she’s not in the ‘troubled’ child category. Henry is shy and when he’s not he’s mean. So he’s a disciplinary problem. Aidan’s still integrating and they keep him here until he and his mother do.” Dorian sighed.

“Well good thing she survived, or you’d be beating yourself up more than you already are. You’ll be a great fad, too bad that don’t count.” I grinned playfully at him.

“I know, right? Proof is in the pudding though, so now I have to. Can’t deny that it’s not a biological impossibility. Any tips?”

I laughed, “On having sex with a woman? For you? Doggie style works, don’t let her get nekkid. Wham bam, thank you ma’am.” I smacked my hands together like I was dusting them off.

Dorian turned a dark shade of red and muttered, “Forget I asked.”

I laughed. “You knew what I would say.”

“No, actually I didn’t. You’d think I’d have at least known the gist of it though.” Dorian rolled his eyes. “So, your blue-eyed boy? How’d breakfast go?”

“Great. He then took me home, and that happened and I saw his childhood bedroom. And then Dae’lin called.” I smiled. “I should go check on Naomi.”

Dorian nodded. “The boy’s things will be delivered to your room for tonight. He has nothing from home, maybe you can go get some since you know where they lived. He might feel more comfortable.”

I nodded. “That sounds like an excellent thing.”

Dorian laughed, “Maybe you can walk with your new boy toy.”

I smiled. “He is most definitely not my toy. I might be his though.”

Dorian blushed again. “You’d think I’d learn. Behave, Nox. I’ll see you later I’m sure.”

We parted ways, and I went down to check on Naomi.

    The Last Phoenix (in order)

  • Fortune is Family

For years the thing I wanted most was family. What I needed most was family. But I neither got what I wanted, nor did I realize it was truly in my power to do something about it. Jace has always been like a brother to me. He was my tie to life when we were kids. I know it sounds all dramatic and suicidal speaking like without Jace there would be nothing. But it’s the truth.

I only tried to kill myself twice. I’ve mentioned it before I think, the first time I slit my wrists but the Venatori healing stopped that attempt as soon as it started. So much for fast healing.

The second time, I came to my senses and I saved myself by softening the earth below me and slowing my descent from the jump off of the AU building. Both times I needed Jace and he wasn’t there. But it’s not his fault. I take responsibility for my actions. I redoubled my efforts in therapy after the second attempt. But it was also when I realized that I had others who cared for me. Dorian was always there for me. Dae’lin was too, but her love of me is tainted with my reckless behavior. She is my mentor before she is family. And in all honesty it is how it needs to be. Jace is my life line – or he was.

We’ve grown distant as life moves on. We still hang out, we still love each other. We haven’t changed. Just our lives have. I’m busy with whatever hunt I’m on. Jace is busy with Mia and Naya and teaching a bunch of teenage kids about their Magnus gift. He’s a great teacher. He sees the world a little differently than most other Magnus. His gift is just that much different that he can teach things in a different way. The kids adore him.

While he will forever and always be my best friend, my brother and my family. He’s not always there when I need him most. And that is why I think I fell so hard for the mysterious blue-eyed boy in The Last Phoenix. Sage is my fortune. He’s better than gold. He’s better than money. Sage wants to make that family with me. We have our issues. I create most of them. But Sage reminds me constantly, he’s not perfect either. But he could have fooled me. Love is blind, right? And I do love him.

Now I know you are asking what the hell does the picture have to do with anything I’ve talked about. A search of “gold” at unsplash where I get my images from, that came up. I was looking for treasure chest type, gold coins something along those lines. I knew I was gonna write about family, but more importantly about Sage. R2-D2 is not C3PO, but if you love one droid, you love them all. And that’s the connection – my geeky boyfriends fascination with Star Wars. His treasures from his childhood that sat on his dresser.

They don’t sit there anymore. I went back and took them. They are now proudly displayed on Sage’s mantle in his living room. Celebrating his childhood loves.

  • Expanding my “Territory”

I already covered the territories of New York Cities supernatural creatures in Lovingly so I won’t get into that again.

Instead I want to talk a little about an initiative I am (well AJ mostly) doing which includes expanding my territory so to speak. More like I’m trying to pull in more readers. Not that I don’t love the lot of my regular readers. I adore you all! But AJ writes just to write. But sharing those words with others is difficult – so thus this blog was born. The point being to spread the words to more people.

I have found a few reads that I enjoy through the WordPress Reader. I follow some of your own blogs. I try to comment when I can. I love to talk and those are the ones I tend to reply to because they aren’t afraid to speak with the fictitious character that I am.

If you haven’t noticed yet, there is a list to the right of the blog posts with the beginnings to other worlds, other writers out there who are sharing their fiction with the world. I want to read about your characters, your worlds, read your stories. If you have something you think I might like then I’d love to hear from you, post a link in the comments, shoot me an email on the contact form.

AJ is currently writing a guest post for another blogger who wants to post it in May sometime. So, expanding my horizons. Of course it’s about me from my point of view. AJ rarely writes anything else. But July I think will see a different character, one to whom I will get to meet in her novel. It’s geared towards kids, which should be interesting. AJ wants to share the words with the girlies, and me I’m not safe for preteens. (The baby turned 10 on the 27th….. 10!!!)

Sorry I’m spamming the reminders. But Saturday starts Camp NaNoWriMo and I will be sharing each day of my trip with you here.

  • Alchemy

Today’s prompt really didn’t call to me. Magic potions – cure alls – the elixir of life. Not really soemthing I have much to say about. However definition #3 at dictionary.com did

an alchemic preparation formerly believed to be capable of transmuting base metals into gold.

My original creation was a channeler for a role playing website based in a futuristic (or past) Wheel of Time world. The First Age is still a big writing draw for AJ, but she fell in love with me – rightfully so! So AJ set out to create me a world along the same basic principles – the ability to bend the five elements.

AJ pulled from the Wheel of Time and Avatar: The Last Air bender. It was during this elemental research that AJ found alchemy – the ability to change elements. Cesari was taken from Latin meaning alchemist. (see the lore book for the exact Latin word)

I could call the patterns elixirs – and actually I might here, but I like patterns and thus I’ll likely stick with it. But now that I think about it elixirs sound kinda cool. A fireball elixir – haha – sounds like a deadly alcohol drink that will leave you drunk for days.

    Elixir

As a reminder. Camp NaNoWriMo starts April 1. The tag here will be Darwynn’s Law. Twitter and Instagram will be used. I’ll try to link in the whole conversations but those probably won’t all show up the day of the post – so follow me and Sage there to see it as it happens – live (sorta).

I will be spending thirty days out in the woods with a bunch of teenage boys teaching them the ins and outs of survival and hunting in the big bad wilderness of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Come see what trouble I get into! Cause you know I will.

The last reminder – April’s camp will follow a few months AFTER The Last Phoenix so pick it up and read before April 1.

  • A Big Mess – Childhood Room

Sage’s bedroom tour lasted all of five minutes. It was unchanged from his youth. An archaic computer was sitting on the desk. There were pictures of his friends pinned to the corkboard above his desk. I recognized them from the club though I couldn’t tell you their names. But I remembered the girl with the purple hair though in the picture she wasn’t coloring her blond locks.

There was a poster of David Bowie hanging on the wall above his bed which made me smile. We’d have to talk music one day. There were pictures of Steve Jobs and other computer geeks from what I could tell. Sitting on top of the dresser was a small toy collection arranged in a row, like they had been there their whole lives. R2-D2, Lego men, a few matchbox cars, but what caught my attention was the little red dragon sitting next to R2-D2. It was the only thing in the room that had captured my attention other than Bowie. I picked up the little red dragon and smiled.

Sage’s watched me but he never said anything. I put Mushu down and turned to him, he was smiling at me, “That meant something?”

I smiled at him. “Mushu was my only friend once upon a time. Sadly, he perished in a fire I started.”

I walked out of Sage’s room and he followed me to the kitchen. “Mrs. Morgan. It was a pleasure to meet you. I need to get going.” I offered her my hand and she dusted off her hands before taking it.

Sage frowned, “I though you were mine the rest of the day.”

I held up my phone that had been vibrating nonstop for the entirty of our time in Sage’s bedroom. There were ten messages from Dae’lin on it.

All of them were identical to the last one.

    Call me
    11:32 AM

I held up the phone to Sage, and he took it and scrolled through all the messages. “I guess you should call her then,” he grinned. “So much for tradition.”

“Would it be too much to ask that you walk me home?” I asked.

Sage grinned. “I’d love to.” He turned to his foster mother in the kitchen and leaned inside to speak to her. “Mama Rose, I’ll be back for dinner. Since my plans have changed.”

We left his childhood home and headed for the subway station that would take me home. I asked, “You live in Hell’s Kitchen?”

Sage nodded, “Not far from Danny and Rosella.”

When the train came, it was full, and we stood holding on to a strap facing each other. The stop and go of the car pushed and pulled us apart, but we said nothing until we were heading up to the street on foot. Sage had broken the playful silence. “Are you sure you want to give me that kinda power?”

I smiled at him. “It’ll keep you safer. You weren’t going to stop doing what Adrian suggested were you?”

Sage frowned and shook his head. There was a small blush creeping up his neck, and I wanted to kiss it away. “No. I liked it. I liked how you reacted.”

“Good. It will keep the pack off your back. I won’t have to protect you and start a war.” I breathed. “And when I’m with you, I can relax a little. I trust you.”

“You barely know me.” Sage grinned.

“That is true. But it is still true. I’m not looking for someone to boss me around. Not a submissive pet. I don’t like surprises or change. Change terrifies me but it’s inevitable and I cope and adapt to it. My life is ordered. I’m trusting you to help me add order not make it more chaos.” I smiled. “No pressure, right? But keep doing what you are doing and we can work on everything else. I talk a lot if you hadn’t noticed. Years of therapy – talking is coping.”

Sage laughed. “It’s a good thing I like listening to you then.”

“Let me call Dae’lin. Maybe I don’t have to come in.” I doubted it but it was at least worth a shot.

The phone rang and Dae’lin picked up. “I’m sorry Nox. I know it’s your birthday, the one day you have off. But she will only talk to you.”

“Really? I have to come in. It can’t wait until tomorrow?” I asked.

She sighed. “Gary is furious with you. It was an easy job. Walker was with you, she should be dead by all accounts. They want this over with.”

I sighed. “Fine I’ll be there soon.”

“Thanks.” Dae’lin hung up the phone, and I frowned at Sage.

    “I’m sorry.”

He smiled. “It’s okay. We all got jobs.”

“Mine is at all hours, every day. I live where I work.” I looked up at the towering Apex Unlimited building and it’s out of place curves in the New York Skyline but it was home it had always been home. “Thank you for breakfast. And everything else too.”

Sage grinned. “It’s not a problem. Call me when you can. Even if it’s at 3 am.”

I nodded. Sage ran his fingers through my hair, it had become a mop over the course of the day with no styling product in it. He grinned at me, “And you don’t have to hide the tattoo.” He traced the lines of the crossed swords at my temple. “I like it.”

“I wasn’t hiding it. But at first, I didn’t think you could see it. You really don’t know what you are, do you?”

Sage shook his head, “You called me a path?”

“You pull the magnetic patterns of the electric wires to you. We call that a technopath. You probably use it without even realizing it.”

Sage frowned. “So, I’m some technopath raised by wolves. Yeah, that doesn’t sound freakish.”

I laughed. “I’ll tell you about my birth and we’ll compare freak shows okay? But Dae’lin will be angry if I don’t show up soon.”

Sage nodded. “All right. Call me.” He leaned in and kissed my cheek.

I pouted. I was disappointed, but it was mostly for show. It earned me a quick peck on the lips before he turned and waved at me, “Later, Nox.”

    “Bye, Sage.”

    The Last Phoenix (in order)

  • Human Side of the Family

I was still processing the fact that Margo was a dragon and that I had a twin sister who she had killed. I was still processing the idea that I was considered powerful by the dragon’s council. That fact alone would send anyone reeling.

I however was grateful that Dorian had made me stay away from work to process all of this. I missed my first appointment in my entire life with Margo this past Monday. Sage was a doll and took my mind off of it. I suspect Dorian and Jace had a hand in tempting him to take the day off.

The three of us, Drake, Sage and I, went to the Natural History Museum and we walked the entire place. Sage and I have been spending most days apart even though I was staying at his place and he worked from home. It made living together a bit easier. I will admit to enjoying the living arrangements right now. Being able to sleep through the night has brightened my mood. I’m not looking forward to returning to my lonely bed in a few days.

But today, Sage is introducing me to his extended family on his father’s side – the whole human side of his family. Special Agent Danny Morgan was bitten by a werewolf when he was a rookie on the Police force in NYC. Thankfully Adrian had found him, and he met Rosales, a full-blooded werewolf and they started their happy little family. They have one daughter Carla who has a eight-year-old daughter, and they adopted Sage when he was just a boy.

The Morgan’s are human – completely. And they are having a Fourth of July barbecue at Danny’s mother’s house. Today I get to pretend to be human. Which isn’t quite so hard to do for me – but for Drake – that means hiding his orange eyes. Three-year-old kids just do not wear contact lenses. Thankfully he can glamor. But the beautiful boy looks different with those dark brown eyes blinking back at me.

“What’s wrong, Daddy?” I smiled at the term of endearment. The first time he’d called me that I didn’t know what to do. I hadn’t had custody of him for more than five days when he called me daddy. I guess that’s the easiest term to say when you are three. He didn’t like calling me Nox or Mr. Nox. Or whatever his friends did – he claimed everyone else had one, he needed one too. I wasn’t going to quibble over something so simple as that – I was going to be his father. I was going to be the best damned father I could be to him and he wasn’t even blood. Just proving blood doesn’t make family.

“Nothing’s wrong, Drake. I’m not used to the brown eyes. You are doing a great job.” I said. We were sitting on a train heading out to the Bronx to meet Danny Morgan’s human family. Sage was staring at me while he pretended to look out the window I was sitting next to. I smiled, “I’m alright, Sage.”

He chuckled in my ear as he put his arm around my shoulders and leaned his head against mine. He whispered, “I know. I think I’m more nervous than you are.”

“Why?” I asked. He knew these people he had no reason to be nervous.

Sage kissed my check and sat forward leaning his elbows on his knees and then looked back at me. “I’ve never brought a guy home before. A few girls. You are the first guy.”

“Are you worried I’ll embarrass you?” I asked with concern. I didn’t want to alienate my boyfriend’s family because they were that – family. And I didn’t want to make things unbearable in the future.

Sage laughed out loud and we got stares from nearby passengers. Sage toned his laugh down with a few of those stares and put his hand on me before he spoke. “God, no. I’m afraid they are going to embarrass themselves. I’ve not actually been open about my sexuality with the extended family.”

“So they don’t know you don’t care about gender or identity?” I asked.

Sage nodded. “Yeah. I can say I’m glad you aren’t like my last partner. That would have been a nightmare. Terry probably would have worn drag just to spite them.”

“So the eyeliner, nail polish and hair is toned down from your ex?” I grinned at Sage. “I would have toned down if you wanted me to.”

Sage shook his head. “No fucking way.”

I covered Drake’s ears and Sage rolled his eyes, “Like he hasn’t heard that word coming out of your mouth.”

I stuck my tongue out at my boyfriend and his eyebrow rose in question. I did it again just to goad him on. Sage crooked a finger at me requesting I come closer. I moved into his space. Our lips were millimeters apart, Sage laughed, “You are going to make me say it?”

I nodded. “That’s part of the fun of it.”

“Give me it.” He breathed out. There was so much lust in those three words I could feel parts of my body react.

I did as he instructed and stuck my tongue out again. It brushed his lips before he parted his own and latched on to it and started sucking. His teeth held my tongue in place with a bare pressure meant to elicit pleasure in that small amount of pain. Sage had been working on his technique and I couldn’t help the small moan that escaped my lips.

Drake was squirming in my lap, “Ew,” he exclaimed.

Sage chuckled against my lips and smiled. He rubbed his hand over Drake’s hair and pulled the little dragon into his lap. He leaned down and whispered in Drake’s ear. “He will learn not to stick his tongue out at me.”

Drake giggled and shook his head. “Nuh uh, Daddy likes when you do that. He does it on purpose.”

Sage giggled in Drake’s ear. “He does? Doesn’t he.”

Drake nodded emphatically. I rolled my eyes playfully and I put my hand on Sage’s leg and squeezed. I was quickly falling in love with him, and my life was going to hard when he broke up with me. It was difficult but I pushed the bad thoughts away. I wasn’t going to dwell on them. I would sabotage my own relationship long before Sage dumped me for my issues. I sighed and looked out the window as we rattle down the rail into the Bronx.

Sage drapped his arm around me and pulled me close. He whispered, “I’m not going anywhere, Nox.”

    I laughed. “I’m transparent. I’m sorry.”

Sage laughed. “I like knowing what you are thinking. I’m glad you show me even if you won’t tell me.” My boyfriend hugged me tighter to him as the train stopped. Sage stood up and took my hand after he picked up Drake and started out of the car. “My Dad adores you, so the rest of the family should love you.”

“Except I’m not a girl you can have babies with.” I grinned at him.

“You have the same problem.” Sage grinned as he pulled my hand closer and wrapped his arm around my waist. “We’ll manage. Already got one on my hip.”

I smiled. “He is pretty great.”

Sage nodded in agreement. “He is.” Sage purred into Drake’s ear as the little dragon curled his body around him. “Grana will like you cause you cook. Dad’s sister, Hannah, will probably talk nail polish with you. Dustin will like your tattoos.”

I nodded. “He can only see one.”

Sage turned and blinked at me. Then nodded in understanding. “Right. I probably shouldn’t mention the Venatori stamp then.” He grinned.

“Probably a good idea.” Sage walked into a front yard. The house was a two story with a basement apartment. Similar to what Sage lived in, except we were in the Bronx now.

Sage put Drake on the ground and knocked on the front door. I heard shuffling on the otherside and a familiar face answered the door. Rosales greeted us. “My darlings.” She picked up Drake and hugged him before shifting him to her hip. Rosie gave Sage a quick hug as she ushered him into the house. She took my hand and squeezed it. “They will love you, Nox.”

I laughed. “Everyone loves me, Rosie.”

She smiled. “Come.” Rosie lead me through the living room where Danny gave me a nod before he was cuddling with Drake on the couch and Sage was joining him to watch whatever show that was on. They were the only ones there so far, which was probably a good thing. I ran my fingers through my blue tipped hair to push the fallen fringe from my face.

There was a small gray haired women moving from pot to pot on the stove and the small island in the kitchen. She looked like she was in heaven, her dark brown eyes sparkled as she dropped a few fresh herbs into a pot. “Grana.” Rose interjected. “I’d like you meet Sage’s partner.”

The older woman looked up from the cutting board where she was cutting carrots and onions. She frowned and looked back down. Rosie continued. “This is Nox, Grana. Nox, this is Grana.”

I took a step forward and smiled. “It’s a pleasure Mrs. Morgan. Can I help you cut the vegetables?”

Rosie smiled and chuckled to herself as Grana looked up with a frown. “You know how to julienne?”

I nodded. “Yes, ma’am. I can also brunoise, paysanne and chiffonade. Or waltz, cha-cha or salsa if you like.” I danced a two-step in place with a smile.

Rosie was chuckling to herself and Grana grinned before it quickly turned into a disapproving frown. “Come round here, boy, let me see you work.”

    I grinned. “Yes, ma’am.”

I continued cutting the vegetables as she had been. Mrs. Morgan nodded and turned to do her own thing while I continued to cut vegetables. Rosie patted my shoulder, “Grana, if you need anything just call me. But I’m sure you and Nox will get along just fine.”

Grana just grunted. There were onions, peppers, celery, carrots and tomatoes on the island in front of me. I asked, “Do you want everything diced?”

The gray hair bobbed on her head in ascent and I continued to cut every vegetable in front of me. I was finishing the last pepper when Grana took the knife from my hand and checked me with her hip. “Go stir the pot.”

I looked in the big large pot and took the wooden spoon she handed me. I took a deep sniff of the boiling liquid in the pot. She was making salsa or some Mexican type stew. It smelled fabulous. “Can I ask what you are making, Mrs. Morgan?”

“Menudo. It’s good for all the drinking the men will be doing.” She looked up at me. “Are you a drunkard?”

I grinned. “No, ma’am. My vice is not drinking.”

She shook her head. “Just blasphemy.” She grunted and started dropping in the vegetables into the soup stock next to the pot I was stirring.

I sighed, but I stirred the pot until she took the spoon from my hand. “The burgers need to be pattied. Danny will be grilling in a bit. Ground meat is in the fridge. Pepper and salt to taste. Half with the chopped peppers and onions and pattied long not round.”

“Yes ma’am.” I started pulling out the preparations and the doorbell rang. I heard shuffling in the living room as someone answered the door. I heard lots of voices and they were heading the direction of the kitchen. I continued to do what I’d been told. Though I figured I was just about to get kicked out of the kitchen.

Rosie came in with her daughter and another woman that looked like Danny in a much more feminine way. I cleaned my hands and walked over to the chatting trio. Rosie smiled and introduced me, “You remember Carla, Nox?”

I took her hand and kissed the third knuckle, “A pleasure, again.” I smiled at the older woman who looked like Danny. “You must be Danny’s sister.”

The woman blushed and took my prooffered hand. “Hannah.”

I smiled. “A pleasure Ms. Hannah.”

I got back to making the meat patties as instructed. Hannah yelled into the living room. “Sage. You didn’t say Grana liked him enough to let him help.”

Sage laughed. “As Nox would say, everyone loves him.”

Grana grunted again and everyone but me laughed. I continued with the job I was given as Hannah and Carla floated back into the backyard with Rosie.

Grana stopped next to me and whispered. “Most boys wouldn’t help me. Why you?”

I smiled. “I like to cook, Mrs. Morgan. I will gladly help however you need me.”

Drake came into the kitchen and climbed up onto the wooden stool out of the way of things. “Daddy, can I help?”

“It’s not my kitchen, baby. Why don’t you go outside right here and ask Mama Rosie if you can help set up outside?”

Drake hopped off the stool. “Okay.” He opened the door and stood in the doorway. “Mama Rosie, can I help?”

I heard Rosie chuckle, “Of course, my little dragonling, come help.”

Mrs. Morgan hip checked me again. “Go take care of your boys.”

I smiled. “My boys are fine. Sage is with his dad, and Drake is with Mama Rose. But if that’s your way of getting rid of me that’s okay too.” I sighed and washed my hands in the sink before I went out the back door to join Rosie and the others.

Rosie frowned as she saw me stepping down. “Did she say anything?”

“Nothing out right, only that I indulged in blasphemy. She told me to go take care of my boys.” I smiled. “I think she wanted me out of the kitchen.”

Rosie nodded. “Highly likely, but she also might have seen you with Drake and decided you needed to spend time with him.”

Drake skipped up to me and handed me a table cloth. “You can help me, Daddy.”

Rosie laughed. “I love that he calls you that so easily.”

    “Me too.”

The door to the back of the house opened and I could smell my love before he wrapped his arms around me from behind. He whispered, “Grana told me to make sure you were alright. Said you left abruptly.”

I shrugged. “She told me to go take care of my boys who were perfectly fine. I figured she wanted me gone. So I’ll come out and help out here instead.”

Sage kissed my cheek and turned me around. “I think she just wanted to make sure you weren’t neglecting Drake. He did ask to help you.”

“It wasn’t my kitchen, so I told him to go help Rosie who I knew would give him something to do. If she were so concerned she could have offered to give him something to do before he left. It’s not like Drake ran too fast or something. He’s three and gets distracted easily.”

Sage hugged me close. “I know, love. But one thing at a time.”

“She doesn’t like that I’m with you. It’s blasphemy. Straight from her mouth.”

    Rosie whispered. “She’s highly Catholic.”

I nodded. “I’m aware. But it’s not going to change anything by telling me I’m living in sin. I didn’t say anything, and I don’t plan to, but that doesn’t mean I enjoy being talked down to.”

Carla laughed. “Grana is an old woman set in her ways.” She wrapped her arms around me and Sage and squeezed. “She’ll love you two just like the rest of us. How could she not? You two are perfectly in love.”

Sage laughed and wrapped his sister in the embrace pulling her in tighter. I wrapped my arm around her too and hugged her. “Thanks, love.” Drake jumped into the mix and wrapped his little arms around our legs and both Sage and I lifted him up and held him close. But he was squirming away when a butterfly flew past. I followed my little dragon as he chased the insect from the yard to the edge of the street.

There was a car flying through the narrow side street and my little dragon didn’t look like he was going to stop. There was no one around and I wasn’t going to be fast enough to pull him from the road so I flung a web of air to stop Drake from flying into the road after his butterfly. There was a strangled cry as my son whipped

back towards me and the car zoomed past him. I hadn’t stopped following him and I was there wrapping my arms around the now frightened dragon. I could see the patterns around him oscillating in fear as I hugged him close. “It’s okay. It’s just me. You have to watch where you are going, baby. You could have been hit and then I’d be devastated without you.”

Drake turned in my arms and wrapped his arms around me whimpering a little. “I sorry.”

“It’s okay, buddy.” I hugged him tight. “As long as you are all right.”

I stood up and I felt arms wrap around me and Drake. “I saw him run to the edge and I couldn’t move fast enough. My father was about to tear off the door hinges until we saw Drake ripped back.” Sage whispered into my ear. “I knew you wouldn’t be far behind.”

Drake was in sobs now. “I won’t do it again.”

Sage hugged him tight against us. “We are just worried, little man. We love you.”

Drake grinned up at Sage. “Wuv you, too.”

The three of us went into the house together arm in arm. Sage tugged me into his lap on the couch and plopped Drake in my lap. Danny smiled. “I wondered how long it would be before you three were attached at the hip. I figured Grana would have kicked you out of her kitchen much earlier. ”

I snuggled against Sage with a grin. “She didn’t exactly kick me out. I took offense, I think.”

Danny laughed. “I’m sure that’s not hard. ”

I shook my head. “No, not really. I’m pretty easy to offend. ”

“You ask for it though. ” Danny snickered

I flashed my blue nails and ran my fingers through my hair pulling the blue fringe up and dropping it down on my forehead. “What, the blue is too much? ” I grinned.

Sage hugged me. “It’s perfect. ”

The doorbell rang and several people walked in the door. Danny got up and shook hands with a man that looked like a younger version of him except for the three days growth of beard. Danny led him over and introduced me, “Dustin, this is Nox, Sage’s partner.”

Dustin offered his hand and I took it with a smile. “A pleasure.” I said as he turned my hand to look at my nails. “What no red and white to go with it?”

I laughed. “Nah, I toned it down for Sage. I didn’t want to embarrass him too much.”

Just as Dustin sat down in the couch next to us a little girl ran over and plowed into me to wrap her arms around my comfortable lap, essentially knocking me from my perch into Dustin’s lap.

The man wrapped an arm around me as if it were a normal thing to do and Sage was laughing while he was splayed with kisses from the tiny little girl who had to be his niece.

Dustin laughed. “This is Nichole, Carla’s daughter. As you can tell she’s in love with your boyfriend.”

I chuckled and crawled out of the other man’s embrace. While I’m not opposed to touching other people, I found the situation a little awkward from Sage’s uncle. I sat down on the floor and leaned against Sage’s leg. I commented, “Who wouldn’t love Sage? He’s rather cute and those gorgeous blue eyes – yeah, I can see it. My best friends daughter is only 9 months, but she does the same thing to me.”

Dustin laughed. “Must be the little girls and the older gay men thing.” He waved his hand to shove away my comment that was sitting on the tip of my tongue as he continued, “I know the lot of you aren’t ‘gay’ but if I said pan or bi someone might think strange things about you.”

I turned to look up at Dustin. “So you know Sage’s preferences?”

He nodded. “Who do you think he talked to when he discovered them? He was all freaked out.” Dustin leaned back against the couch, “Danny told Sage stories of my college experiments.”

    I nodded, “Just experiments?”

Dustin nodded. “I had a few on again off again boys in college but nothing much since.”

“And you know my preferences how?” I asked.

“Sage and I had a conversation recently.” Dustin winked.

    “How recent?” I asked.

“Yesterday, actually. While you were in the shower I believe. Or maybe it was out for a run. I think it was out for a run. But there was a shower mentioned.” Dustin chuckled. “He wanted to know if he should bring you here or not. He was going to sit home with you and Drake and start your own tradition. I talked him into coming. Told him Grana would accept you eventually and that starting now while it’s young love would be best. I told him not to hide you from us. Besides, I wanted to meet the man who claimed the boy and makes him ask silly questions.”

Sage leaned over and covered my ears. “He doesn’t need to know what I asked Uncle Dusty, and neither do the kids.”

I looked up at my love behind me and grinned, “You know I’m going to ask now. Right?”

Sage pouted. I wanted to pull that lip into my mouth and suck on it such that my body reacted and I had to readjust my position. His pout quickly turned into a grin as he saw what my reaction was. “I suppose I can tell you.” Sage turned to the girl squirming in his lap under the death glare that Drake was giving him. “Nicky, why don’t you take Drake out back and throw the ball around.”

Nicky pouted, “I don’t think he likes me, Uncle Sage.”

Sage waggled a finger at Drake and the little dragon scurried over to him and his frown deepened. “He’s just mad he thought you were taking his place.” He ruffled Drake’s hair, “Your daddy is mine, baby. No one can take your place.”

Drake beamed and hugged Sage. Drake offered his hand to Nichole and the two kids went out the backdoor. Sage pulled me back up into his lap. I wasn’t going to deny him my presence, though I probably should.

Sage whispered in my ear, “I was asking about a few things you are into I’ve never tried.”

I quirked an eyebrow at my boyfriend, “You are asking your uncle who experimented with boys in college about things you’ve never tried that I’m into? Why didn’t you just ask me?”

Sage blushed brighter than I had seen him. His voice was low and only in my ear. “I don’t want you to think I’m unqualified to satisfy you.”

I turned to Sage and pulled back to look him fully in the eyes without having to cross my own. “You will never be unqualified, Sage. I don’t care if you were a fucking virgin when I met you. If there is something you want to explore, or even something that terrifies the shit out of you, just tell me. You are enough. I don’t need any of that other stuff as long as I can come home to you.”

I pulled Sage in for a long deep kiss and we both gasped for breath when we parted. I whispered so low only Sage could hear me. “Sage, love, we’ve not even gone all the way and I’m completely satisfied with our sex life. I so fucking love you, I have no idea how to tell you without freaking you out.”

Sage chuckled against my cheek. “Did you really just say those three little words first?”

I chuckled, “It was five actually.” I kissed Sage’s neck then whispered in his ear. “I love you, Sage Morgan.”

I felt the shudder run through my boyfriend as he wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close and whispered back, “I love you, too.”

Dusty laughed from his ring side seat on the couch. “Like I said, the one who claimed the boy.”

Danny was chuckling from his corner in the recliner. “I told you they were affectionate.”

“Public displays of affection seem the pretty boy’s thing, not so much our shy little Sage.” Dusty grinned and ducked as Sage threw a pillow from behind me at him.

I guffawed, “Sage is so not shy. He’s easily embarrassed but he’s not shy. First time we met, he very openly watched me dancing with one of his friends, the second time knowing who I was and I didn’t have any clue who he was, he was bold enough to remove the two condoms I had in my back pocket and pocket them.” I grinned across at Sage who turned bright red at the story but he never said anything to deny it. “See easy to embarrass, but not shy. I mean he’s asking his uncle about sex – how shy could he be?”

Sage pushed me out of his lap and I slid to the floor with ungraceful like thud. I rolled my eyes at Sage now towering above me from where he stood. “I would have moved.”

Sage grinned. “It wouldn’t have been as fun.”

I stood up and pressed my body against his side, “Oh I could have made it worth your while.” And I turned on my heel and headed into the kitchen.

I heard laughter from behind me but turning and looking would ruin the whole storming off drama queen thing I had going on right then. I felt Sage’s fingers snake in between mine as I entered the door to the fragrant kitchen. I smiled over at my boyfriend as he tugged me towards the bar stools in front of the kitchen island I had worked at before.

Sage’s Grana never looked up as we sat down. I was hesitant but Sage pulled me down anyway and I really had no choice other than to sit down. Sage smile at me reassuring that everything was fine. “Grana, so why don’t you like Nox?”

She turned around with a stunned and grump expression on her face and I wanted to hide my face at the directness of my boyfriend. She looked at me, no, she studied me. I watched her eyes take all of me in. A thin smile stretched her lips as she turned to look at her grandson. “I like him. His hair however I do not.”

Sage laughed. “What’s wrong with his hair?”

She looked at me again then wiped her hands on her white apron and walked around the island to stand next to me. I obliged her and turned on the bar stool so I faced her. She ran her fingers through the front of my hair. “What’s with the colors? Not strong enough to pull it all off?”

I grinned at her. “It takes more practice to dye just certain parts of it without a foil cap and holes and such. I do it all free style Mrs. Morgan.” Granted I used magic to do it, but I wasn’t about to tell Sage’s completely human grandmother that I believed in and used magic.

Sage chuckled at my words but said nothing. He’d watched me change the color from blue to orange to red and back several times that morning before I had finally settled on a color. Blue seemed to be my go to color since meeting my mysterious blue-eyed boy.

Mrs. Morgan rolled her eyes. She ran her finger over the scar on my left cheek. “Who would ruin such a handsome face?” She moved around to the other side of the kitchen. “Besides, ” she continued without letting me answer the question. I had a lie to tell, because the truth was so much stranger. “He can cook. He’ll make sure you don’t wither away and die.” She grinned at me, “He needs to get out in the sun more too – and moving. Tap, tap, tap in that basement of his.”

She went back to her cooking. I grinned at Sage. “I’ll see what I can do.” I slide off the stool and took Sage’s hand in mind. “I think I’ll drag his pale butt outside now. I need to check on Drake anyway.”

She nodded and continued her work and Sage dutifully slid from his perch and followed me out the backdoor into their backyard. The yard itself was set up with tables and chairs, a grill was warming in the corner of the cement patio they had everything set up on, and a small corner of grass in the backyard housed the little dragon and Nichole kicking a ball across the yellowing grass.

It was warmer than a typical July which was no problem for me, but I was behaving and not chilling the air like I typically do. I was going to be sweating by the end of this holiday event.

Rosie and Carla and several other women I didn’t know were setting the tables up and decorating the yard with red, white, and blue and other patriotic things. Rosie grinned across at us as we made our way down the steps hand in hand.

Hannah smiled at me and pulled another woman over. “This is Marjorie. She’s Sage’s thrid cousin.”

I smiled at her and offered my hand. “Nox.” She took it shyly and I pulled it to my lips and kissed it softly. “A pleasure, Marjorie.”

She giggled and her and Hannah went off whispering. Sage called out after them, “Aunt Hannah.”

Both of them turned around and Sage pulled me close and laid an aggressive kiss on my lips that left me wanting in my surprise. I licked my lips and bit my bottom one out of desire and Sage turned backed to them breaking eye contact to taunt them, “He’s mine.”

Hannah laughed, “Well played, Sage, well played.”

I looked at my love and shook my head. “Can I go play now, or do you need to show me off?”

Sage waved his hand in front of him, in the classic be my guest fashion and grinned up at me. “Go play. You can be such a child sometimes.”

I laughed. “What? I get along better with kids my own virtual age.”

Sage chuckled as he moved to where Rosie was setting up things on another table which I assumed was for the food as I went and sat down in the middle of the yellow square of grass. I plopped down smack dab in the middle of the kids games. Drake grinned down at me as I laid back on the grass. “Dad!” he said with excitement as he jumped onto my stomach. Nichole was soon to follow and both were climbing on me as I laid my hands on the dying grass.

Drake giggled at me. “Do it.”

I laughed at his exuberance, and I couldn’t deny him the miracle of my magic. I spread my fingers into the dirt and I sent the earth and the grass every resource at my disposal. The yellowing grass perked up, and started to green. It was nearly undetectable but Nichole gasped and leaned down and whispered in my ear, “You can do magic?”

The pure joy in that statement alone was enough to make me smile. Drake quickly hushed her, “Shhhh. You can’t tell anyone.”

Nichole nodded, “What else can you do?”

I sat up on the now very pliable green grass and both kids huddled in front of me blocking the view from outside our bodies. I formed a small flickering flame, and a tiny rain cloud with thunder and lightning included, the wind swirled underneath it and on the ground I spun my finger and a tiny dust tornado picked up tiny particles and flung them around.

I felt Sage approaching and when I looked up to see him, he was grinning. The kids on the other hand were surprised and dashed away all my pretty objects when Sage towered over them. He giggled and I leaned back on the green grass and stared up at the clouds past my loves head. “Are you cheating?” he asked

    I shook my head. “Never.”

Sage sat down next to me and pulled my head into his lap making me adjust my position. But I enjoyed the feeling of Sage’s legs underneath my head. Dirty thoughts rolled into my head as I thought about all the things I could do later. A smile spread on my lips and Sage was chuckling down at me. “To be a fly on the inside of those thoughts.”

I laughed. “I’ll let you in on all those thoughts later.”

Sage grinned down before planting an upside down kiss on my lips with a gentle caress of his lips against mine. I let out a soft sigh of pleasure. I was in heaven with my boys.

Drake was pawing through my hoodie looking for my phone and when he found it he sat on my stomach. “Umph” I spat out between breaths. The little dragon wasn’t heavy but he was far from light when he was unexpected.

He flipped through my phone like it was nothing and found my Spotify playlists and picked his favorite. The small speaker sounded off instantly with a big band song. Drake tugged at my hands. “Dance!”

I asked him, “You gonna dance with me?”

He shook his head and I laughed, “You want me to dance by myself?”

Drake shrugged. “Sage, or Mama Rosie?”

Sage shook his head, “I don’t think so.”

I pouted at my boyfriend from the ground and he smiled at me. “Dance with Carla.”

Carla turned and frowned at us, “What about me?”

I asked as I stood up and dusted off my jeans and hoodie from the lingering yellowed grass. “Do you want to dance with me?”

Carla shook her head no way. “Go make Aunt Hannah.”

I sighed, but I complied and I didn’t ask this time. I shouted to Sage, “Restart the song, please.”

The music started and I grabbed Hannah’s hand and I pulled her towards me in a graceful spin and she looked up at me with a furious grin. I coaxed her into dancing with me by moving to the music. She dutifully watched my feet and my arms as I started teaching her how to do one of the many 20’s era dances that went with that particular song Drake had chosen. Halfway through she was doing pretty well. I started to add a little flare and she laughed at my antics as I spun her around and lifted her up and tossed her from side to side.

By the end of the song Hannah was panting and laughing which meant she was gasping for breathe as she tried to speak, “That was fun. You are good.”

I smiled. “I try.” The next song started and I didn’t bother with the dance partner and just showed off. I had learned many variations of dances as child and could do which ever part was required but I enjoyed free styling as they said – going wherever the mood took me.

There was an unexpected pause of the song that had me stopping to look up as the music blared out of a much large speaker. I sighed. “Fine. But you are dancing next song.” I looked to Sage and he shook his head. I nodded. “Yes, you are.”

Drake was giggling as he picked the next song. I wasn’t sure what that would mean. It could be a lovely dovey song or it could be something far more erotic for the two of us if he chose poorly.

The next song started and I crooked my finger at Sage and he reluctantly came to me with a mock frown on his face. He was so cute when he pouted I sucked his bottom lip into my mouth and kissed him softly and I pull against me and just let the music take us where it went.

It wasn’t what Sage and I would dance like in a club in the darkness and throng of people around us. It was a lot more tame than that but it wasn’t a prescripted dance either, more like we knew what each other would do and reacted. There was no leading and following. But Sage’s arms were around my waist and I had one arm slung around his neck and the other on his hip.

Dusty yelled from the backdoor, “Getta room!”

Sage turned a pretty shade of red and I kissed him deeply to make it worse. He bit my lip in retaliation. I couldn’t help but grin at him as the next song started to play and he left me to go talk with Dusty. Drake and Nichole joined me on my make shift dance floor – which really was just a clear spot of the driveway that wasn’t covered with tables and chairs. I always enjoyed dancing with the kids they liked to copy what ever you did. It was fun.

Danny and Dusty were both out in the backyard now standing around the grill. I was noticing a definite separation of duties here and it was annoying, but I wasn’t human so I supposed that I would find it so. Sage and everyone else seemed to accept the division of groupings. But I was soon distracted by a few older kids who joined us from down the block. It seemed the music and the now cooking meat was pulling in more people.

Sage was lingering in a corner by himself. I watched him from the dance floor. He would speak to Danny or Dusty, but few others spoke to him. He looked bored. I wasn’t being a very good boyfriend. I patted Drake on the shoulder and knelt down and whispered to my boy, “I’m gonna go keep Sage company.” He nodded and continued his wiggling. He was enjoying himself.

I walked past the women and the few men gathering near the grill to stand in front of Sage who was tapping away at his phone completely oblivious to everything around him. “Should I take that away so you’ll spend time with your family?” I asked him with a wide grin.

Sage looked up and tapped one last time and tucked his phone into his pocket. He shook his head. “No.” He stared past me, but I didn’t turn to look and see. Sage sighed. “Want to meet my last girlfriend?”

I frowned and turned to look at the girl who was standing just the other side of our makeshift dance floor leaning against the corner of the house chatting with Carla. She was wearing a pair of daisy dukes and a red halter top that left little to the imagination. She was definitely sex in that outfit and her hair pulled up into a high pony tail. Her make up was well done though the lipstick while it matched her shirt was a bit to dark for my liking. I extended my ear to hear what was being said – not a trick I liked to use often.

Carla whispered, “Jeanie, you shouldn’t be here.”

Sage’s ex smiled, “Grana invited me. And it’s a block party, isn’t it?”

“G, he’s got someone with him.” Carla exclaimed probably louder than she meant to as she looked around to see who was listening and she frowned at me when she saw me. I took a few steps towards her and Carla shook her head. Too late I mouthed to her.

I could feel Sage’s eyes on me as I skirted the dance floor and stood next to Carla. “Who’s this pretty thing?” I asked.

Carla sighed with exasperation. “This is Jeanie. She was just leaving.”

Jeanie rolled her eyes but I gave her a welcoming smile. “I’m Nox.” I offered her my hand.

She looked down at my painted nails and laughed. “Is this who Sage brought?”

I grinned at her, “And if I am?”

She stood up straight and looked me up and down assessing me in whatever fashion she thought fit. Her frown gave more information than I needed, but I waited for her response. “You know he’s not gay, right?”

I nodded. “I’m perfectly aware of that fact. Neither am I.”

“Oh so, you fuck girls, too?” She spat out bitterly.

I smiled. “Such a vulgar mouth from such a pretty thing. You kiss your mama with that mouth? I’ve enjoyed the company of a woman or a hundred.” It was perfect timing to see a blond with purple highlights strolling down the driveway with her equally blonde sister who turned on her heels when she saw me. I grinned at her. “Alice, don’t run.” I called after her. “Come prove a point for me.”

Alice sighed, and I heard Sage stop next to me. He wasn’t showing any emotion what-so-ever and that was troubling. Alice stood next to me and I offered her my hand which she took. “Sweet Alice.” I put her hand to my lips and kissed gently. “Do I enjoy the fairer sex?”

She blushed and hid her eyes behind her hand but nodded. Alice took a deep breath and looked over at Jeanie. “He and I had a good time several months back. Though I will say I was highly intoxicated.”

I smiled. “I wasn’t. But for some reason, I didn’t remember your good friend until he enlightened me.”

Alice snorted. “You fucking flirted with him more than me.”

    I laughed. “Are you surprised?”

She rolled her eyes. “No. Sage is cute, if a little bit too much of a wallflower for me.”

I turned to Sage. “That seems to be the consensus – though I will admit to not seeing it.”

Sasha laughed and ran her fingers through the bright blue tips on my head. “You purposefully match to his eyes, don’t you?”

I grinned. “It’s one of my favorite colors, now.”

Sasha grabbed Alice by the arm and Sage by the hand and they wandered away from Jeanie and I. Carla had left when the conversation turned to my sex life. I guess she hadn’t wanted to hear the stories.

I smiled at Jeanie. “You are welcome to stay. There is plenty of food and loud music for everyone.” I left Sage’s ex trying to find a way to be insulting to my invite. It wasn’t my party and she was welcomed by Grana, who was I to renig such an offer.

Sage was chatting away with Sasha and Alice and looking a lot more comfortable so I went to the dance floor and lifted my little dragon up on to my shoulders and took Nichole’s hands and we did the jitterbug to the same song I’d danced to before, either the playlist was repeating, or it had just randomly gotten to that point after we’d set up to play without Drake selecting songs. Either way it didn’t matter as I twirled and tossed Sage’s 8-year-old niece around the dance floor.

The dance floor filled and emptied several times before dinner was on. Tables and chairs were full of people, even the sidewalk and patch of newly greened grass was occupied. I was happy to see that Sage and his friends had taken refuge on the grassy green. Drake and Nichole were sitting behind the group of four friends. Somewhere alone the line Sasha’s boyfriend showed up and the four of them were chatting while eating. I was one of the last people to get food – mostly because I’d been dealing with Drake and Nichole’s plates and neither one of them were being cooperative. I gave up and had just put things on their plate.

It gave me the opportunity to decide what I was going to eat that would cause the least anxiety. There wasn’t much I would consider healthy. The table was loaded down with wonderfully smelling Mexican foods, dips and various chips, tons of bread and tortillas, hot dogs and burgers. The vegetables were mostly raw platters and toppings. The salads were pasta and potato and other things that looked like jello and whip cream delights.

I was going to be eating when we got home, I could foresee that already. Until Danny stood next to me with a chuckle. “Can’t find anything your delicate stomach can manage?”

I shook my head. “I can see a night in the bathroom, or an empty stomach in my future.”

Danny lifted the tin foil of the platter he was holding and there was grilled chicken, and steak. I smiled at him. “Sage said you’d have issues. So do Rosie and I. The moon is close.”

I nodded knowingly as I stabbed a chicken breast and dropped it on my plate with a sigh of relief. “The rest you’ll have to deal with I’m sorry, vegetables aren’t par for course in my house for obvious reasons.”

I smiled. “Thank you, Danny.” He went off to share his plate with Rosie and Carla while I finished putting a dab of everything short of the sticky sweet things on my plate. I probably wouldn’t touch it, but I’d at least attempt to make an effort. I had a staple I could manage and plenty of raw vegetables to eat – I would be good.

When my plate was finally finished I made my way over to Sage and his friends. My blue eye boy looked up from the ground with a great big smile and made room for me almost literally in his lap. He crossed one leg under him and the other he bend with his knee pointing up to the sky so he could keep me close. He patted the grass in front of him and I folded neatly down into the spot he’d made for me leaning in to give him a small kiss before I returned to my seat.

    Alice groaned, “Get a room.”

I grinned at her with a knowing look. She blushed even before I said, “Why, we didn’t.”

She bowed her head and hid her face behind her hair. “I was drunk!”

I laughed, “I wasn’t.” Sage’s fingers slayed across my back just above my waist but he’d wormed his way under my shirts to rub small circles against my back and tracing the outlines of the deep scars at my back. I froze mid bit while I adjusted to his touch. He leaned forward and placed a kiss on my cheek and hummed softly in my ear to comfort me. He whispered, “Do you want me to stop?”

I shook my head, but I couldn’t manage to say anything. Sage chuckled softly in my ear before he kissed my cheek again and returned to his seat and his hand continued play with my back. I focused on the tender touch and relaxed slowly into it. Sage hummed softly to himself when I started to eat my food again. Such was the affect my boyfriend had on me. My biggest don’t touch me place was actually a place of comfort once I got past my own issues with it. I trusted Sage implicitly, I knew he would never hurt me physically or emotionally on purpose. It was a topic we’d covered a great many times this week while I stayed with him, it was sad it was coming to a bitter end. I was going to miss his constant companionship.

The conversation around me flowed easily between him and his friends and I was able to stay in my own little world until Sasha said something and Sage had to tap me on the back to get my attention. I turned to look at him and he smiled at me. “He didn’t hear you, Sash, he was off in la-la land.”

I turned to Sage’s purple haired friend, “I’m sorry.”

She only smiled. “What exactly do you do? Sage is so cryptic about it.”

I smiled. “Technically, you’d call me a bounty hunter, but I do a lot of private investigation. It’s actually how I met Danny a few years back.”

Sasha’s boyfriend asked, “So you met Sage through his dad?”

“God, no.” I laughed. “I met Sage at Aspect. I was using him to get away from a girl who had been following me around. A little homophobia to scare away the annoying chicks. I didn’t recognize who he was, though I did remember him from somewhere. Can’t forget those eyes, though. We danced until Sasha came to take him away from me. He gave me his number, and took something from me. I probably wouldn’t have called him back except my best friends wife texted Sage and when he responded I was forced to hold a conversation. We’ve spent a good deal of time together since then.”

Sasha laughed. “Yeah, you are like staying with him for the past week.”

I nodded. “More of a prescribed vacation from my guardian. I recently was informed of some earth shattering news regarding my family history and the people who raised me and I was a mess. Dorian insisted I leave home for a few days and relax. And Sage has been very therapeutic.”

“You call your guardian by his first name?” Alice asked.

“Well Dorian isn’t exactly my guardian. He no more raised me than Margo did. They were the two adults short of my mentor, Dae’lin, who made sure my simple needs were met. I didn’t meet my father until I was 18 and our relationship is a little strained.”

Sage added, “It’s getting better now. And Drake is helping that.”

“You adopted a kid already? Doesn’t that get in the way of your lifestyle?” Alice asked.

I laughed. “You mean the hook ups?” Alice nodded and I shook my head. “I’d been wanting to settle down for a while. Drake’s parents were lost to the legal system and his mother insisted I look after him since he and I had similar circumstances. We are still figuring things out. My place isn’t meant for the two of us. One day soon hopefully I’ll be able to move to someplace bigger and I can have the family I want.”

Sasha grinned and added, “Or you could just move in with Sage.”

I smiled. “As much as I’d like that, I don’t think either of us are ready for that level of in each other’s space. But it’s always a possibility for the future.”

Sage finished chewing and whispered, “You can stay if you want to.”

I smiled at him and leaned over and kissed him softly, “We’ll talk about that when we don’t have prying ears.”

Sasha laughed. “Oh come on, you two kissy face and you don’t let us her all the good gossip!”

“It’s not something you need to be privy too right now Sasha.” Sage added. “Nox and I need to talk it over.”

I was pretty sure that Sasha’s boyfriend’s name was Bryan but I couldn’t be certain. But he grumped at us, “He eat anything other than rabbit food and healthy crap?”

Sage laughed, “Absoultely not. Occassionally I can get him to share a chocolate milk shake with me. But I do have to hide any choclate in the house or I won’t get anyay.”

    “A typical girl.” Bryan laughed.

I rolled my eyes. And Sage just shook his head as he moved his empty plate to the side and pulled me closer and more into his lap. He hid in the crook of my neck and kissed the exposed skin under his lips. He was taking comfort in me and providing it as well. He was attempting to keep me from making any comments about being a girl. I really hated people who stereotyped. I’d rather be called a fag than something he considered a girl.

Sasha elbowed Bryan. “Bry, behave. They are cute together.”

“I’ll never get used to Sage’s choice in partners, Sasha.”

I stuck my tongue out at Bryan. “We’ll just have to remember not to invite you to any dinners.” I tilted my head back and reached up behind Sage’s head and pulled him down for a kiss. “We’ll talk about that later. I’m going to go mingle.”

Sage nodded and smiled while he watched me move through the labrynth of tables.

Danny and Rosie were dining together and I sat down with them. “Thank you for having me here, Danny. It’s interesting seeing a normal family getting together. I’ve spent dinners with the Vega’s but they aren’t normal. Though I think they mostly get along better now. Was hard with Dorian being their black lamb and he was the reason I was there.”

Rosie smiled, “Nox, you are always welcome with us. I know it’s difficult to be normal since you are very not. It’s a matter of pride with you”

“I’m alright. I cheated a little. Nichole and Drake were awed by the greening of the grass. Sage scared them coming over and they broke all my pretty toys.”

Danny laughed. “I’m sure you can make them all over again.”

    “I can. ”

Carla sat down next to me. “Nicky likes you.”

    “Everyone likes me.” I bragged.

She laughed and wrapped an arm around me and hugged. “This your last night with Sage?”

I nodded. “He said I could stay if I wanted to. We need to talk about it still. But, yeah, it’s supposed to be.”

Carla smiled, “Let me and Mama take Drake so you two can talk then and make a decision. Nicky is always wanting a little brother, but one is hard enough being a single mom.”

I smiled. “If he wants to that’s great. And I’ll repay the favor with a sleep over one night, so you can have a girls night out or a date or something.”

Carla smiled and offered me her hand, “Deal.” Which I took with a smile.

Drake was running past the back of my chair with Nichole in tow and I scooped both of them up in my arms. “Hey Drake, you want to spend the night with Nicky and her mama?”

Drake looked at me hopefully. “I tired. I can’t hold it all night.”

I smiled. “When you go home with Ms. Carla you can let go okay?”

Carla leaned down and whispered into the little dragon’s ear, “I love your eyes. They are so pretty and unique.”

    Drake beamed. “Okay.”

“We’ll come get him in the morning so we don’t worry about clothes, and I’ll bring some to keep at your Mama’s house since it might become a usual thing.”

Carla nodded. “Sounds good.” She leaned over and whispered. “I’m sorry about Jeanie. Grana’s always liked her, said she should be Sage’s wife. But she’s a bit too self centered for Sage.”

“I’m self centered, are you saying I’m too much for Sage?” I grinned playfully at her, but she frowned and paled at my comment before she saw my smile.

“No, that’s the thing. You aren’t. Sure you play at it. When he was with G, she never let him out of her sight, he was on a short leash, he couldn’t even talk to another girl. If he looked like he was going to go after a guy she did it first. She was always center stage. You distract people from Sage, but you don’t want to be there. You want to be in his arms alone and curled up in bed with your family.” Carla smiled. “He’s never been happier.” She laughed. “He keeps stealing glances at you.”

“I am pretty to look at.” I bragged as I looked over at my boyfriend with a grin. His smile brightened and he looked away shyly. “But I’m the lucky one.”

Carla smiled. “I’m glad you think so.” She stood up with her hand on my shoulder and leaned down to whisper. “Or I might have to beat you up for my little brother.”

    I laughed. “Bring it baby.”

She kissed my cheek and wiped it off as she walked past. Sage unfolded from the ground and walked over to me and sat down with his back to the table. I turned myself sideways and draped a leg over his and pressed myself close to him. He leaned back surveying the scene with his arms on the table perched. We chatted with his parents, and his family the rest of the night. Only moving a little when Drake and Nichole came by, or to make room for more people at the table.

It was a good night. Sage wasn’t quite in his element, but he relaxed and I got to know his human family a little more than before. It was an interesting case study of family life, and of being human. I wasn’t sure I could do it everyday, but I was willing to try with Sage. I’d do anything for him.

The fireworks that ended the night were nothing short of spectacular – both the ones outside and the ones in the bedroom.

  • Born to the Purple

I could have gone with purple with rage, but that really didn’t define anything new in my life, nor do I think I’m an angry person. Sure I’ve been pissed off and angry – who hasn’t. But it’s not something I can go on about. However the other idiom – born to the purple this I can. It typically indicates born to the royals – the nobility – the aristocracy basically.

And despite my actual birth and lack of knowledge I was born to the purple. My father is a Viddens. His father before him, and so on one – for countless generations the Viddens’ have been one of the ruling families of the Venatori. There are eight ruling families. And the leader of our race is one man, who is counciled by the council of 8 ruling families.

    • Jose Vega – Scrin (Dorian’s grandfather)
    • Kai Viddens – Venatori (Magnus)
    • Matias Rivera – Magnus (Dae’lin’s father)
    • Asher Eriksen – Scrin
    • Lynne Dowager – Scrin
    • Stephanie Stone – Venatori
    • Matthew Haskins – Venatori
    • Pierre Eskridge – Scrin (Magnus)

We are lead by Mark Green, who is the oldest and most powerful Magnus alive. He is NMC5 – exactly my rank and designation. And I am stronger than Mark Green by leaps and bounds. Which is a whole other story and something that is going to play out in future stories. It’s important to know this, but it’s irrelevant at the time.

Back in times of yore, the Venatori survived like most supernatural creatures. The most powerful ruled, they made the rules, they enforced the rules. Once upon a time, the ruling families changed – each successor killed their predecessor. But the more ‘civilized’ the Venatori became the less that happened, and the ruling families passed down to the oldest heir. Such is the way of it now. Dae’lin will follow her father on the council. Dorian’s father Emilio will follow his grandfather, and Sahara will follow Emilio once his time is done. Adam will follow my father into the council role. Nick and myself are the youngest sons and neither of us bear the Viddens’ name.

However, the leader of the Venatori still follows the old rules of succession – the successor must kill the leader to his place. It typically happens when the current leader is old and senial. And after the council has chosen the best person to take the place. So, having said that – despite the fact I am stronger, than any known magnus alive today – I would never rule the Venatori. The only way that happens is if I kill Mark Green in cold blood – which goes against everything I stand for.

  • Omnipotent Narration

AJ doesn’t like writing in omnipotent pov but here is the first time Sage and I met in that PoV.

Aspect catered to nearly every type of club goer. There was loud music playing throughout the darkened club, multi-colored strobe lights shining around the dance floor. The bar was fully stocked with bartenders who knew how to put on a good show for their clientele. Upstairs was full of circular booths that looked down on the dance floor. The wait staff was wearing clothes that left very little to the imagination. The girls wore short skirts with skin tight black tights and shirts that shown as much cleave. The few men who waited on customers around the club were shirtless wearing tight fitting black jeans. The club was selling sex but it tried to hide it in plain sight.

Every Friday night Aspect had live music to bring in different types of people. On the line up this Friday was a local DJ mixing old school dance with new technology and instrumentation.

The line outside was long, it wound around the corner and Sage groaned before their little blonde haired birthday-girl pulled them to the front of the line. They expected to be sent packing but Alice brushed up against the large bulky door man wearing a black bouncer shirt that was two sizes too small. Sage was surprised he could fold his arms in front of him without popping a seam. He didn’t like that much muscle on a body, but it was impressive none-the-less.

Alice cooed into the bouncer’s ear, holding her drivers license out for inspection. “It’s my birthday.” She battered her eye lashes and gave him a well-practiced pout. “Can you let me and my friends in?”

The bouncer took the license and glanced at it and with a smile he removed the velvet rope keeping people from stepping past him and let the four of them through. Bryan was the last one through before the rope was reattached to the pedestal, Sage smiled as his friend through Sasha handed the man a fifty in thanks. They had all forked over a little extra for the money they were spending on Alice tonight – it was her birthday.

The club was no different than the last two they had been two. The music was loud, the dance floor was crowded and the alcohol was overpriced. Sasha had informed Sage that it was his turn to babysit the birthday girl. Her and Bryan had watched her the last two clubs. He only nodded as he followed his charge through the crowd of people milling through the club as they half danced, half walked around others and the tables.

Alice went straight for the bar and Sage took up post several spaces down so not to interfere with her ability to pick up guys. He tried not to stare too much, but it’s hard to watch someone and not stare. Sage ordered a beer from the bartender as he stopped in front of him. He gave the other man a smile and a thanks when he went off to take the rest of the orders. The bartenders unlike the other men on the floor were wearing shirts – almost a pity. But they were putting on a different kind of show flipping their bottles of liquor, adding flames to drinks to show the alcohol content among other fanciful tricks that Sage wasn’t interested in at the moment. Another time he might have watched the bartenders preforming their tricks and slight of hand. He had to make sure Alice was safe.

Sage sipped at his cold stout beer as Nox approached the small blond at the other end of the bar. He leaned down, wrapping an arm around Alice and started talking into her ear. Alice shivered at his breath on her neck and turned to look at him over her shoulder as he said, “Hey, Duckling. You look all lonely here by yourself.”

The smile she gave Nox reached her big blue eyes. “My sister is dancing with her boyfriend.” She wasn’t alone, at least not in her adventure, but they had left her alone. Sage watched carefully trying to not look like he was staring. Nox noticed the blueness of the other man’s eyes but was distracted by the delivery of Alice’s drink.

Nox plucked it from her hands gently. Sage noticed the painted on color matched the crimson tips in Nox’s hair. Nox brought the drink to his lips and set it down with a wave of his hand he called the bartender over. “You don’t want this.” He ordered her a sex on the beach before turning back to Alice with a playful grin, “You need something a little more sexy than a rum and coke.”

Nox raised his gaze to Alice’s watcher his chocolate brown eyes locked with the other man’s blue and Nox whispered into her ear, “A friend of yours?”

Alice answered with a smile of her own. “My sister’s best friend.”

“Let’s give him a little show, Duckling.” Nox purred into her ear while Sage watched their interchange. Alice stood carefully and took Nox’s hand and they moved to the edge of the dance floor. She wrapped her arms around Nox’s neck and his attention was on the girl in front of him, but he could feel Sage’s eyes on him. Being watched seemed to turn both Nox and Alice on as they moved to the beat of the music pouring from the speakers.

The music moved them and Sage watched. Alice whispered to Nox, “Do you like him watching us? We can move farther in?” To add emphasis to her question Alice ground her body against Nox’s leg which extracted a soft growl from his throat.

“It’s all good, Duckling.” Nox wanted Sage to watch. He enjoyed the feeling of his eyes on him and it made the feeling of the girl in front of him that much more enjoyable.

Several songs later, Sasha came from out of the crowd along the dance floor and grabbed Alice by the hand and they walked off in the direction of the restroom. It was a classic girl move and Nox smiled now that he could go talk to Sage standing at the bar. As he got closer he saw just how blue Alice’s friend’s eyes were. Deep sapphire blue, Nox could almost get lost in them.

He leaned on the bar next to Sage with a grin and asked, “Enjoying the show?”

Sage smiled brightly at Nox with raised eyebrows. “I am.”

“She your girlfriend?” Nox asked wanting to know the answer – who was he watching.

Sage shook his head. “My best-friend’s sister. Just looking out for her.” He confirmed what Alice had said. At least they were keeping their stories straight, Nox thought.

Nox ordered two beers while he waited for the girls to return. Tired of being coy, he asked with a grin. “So you checking her out?” The two beers were set in front of Nox and he deftly picked one up, took Sage’s empty bottle from his hand and placed the new in it’s place with a smile before taking the other and sipping at it while he waited for the answer.

Sage returned Nox’s toothy grin with one of his own and a quick wink. “No.” The way he said it made Nox’s skin tingle. Nox enjoyed the fact that he’d been the object of Sage’s gaze. But he didn’t get a chance to respond when Alice came up behind him. Her arms wrapped around him. She deposited a warm cloth in the hand behind Nox’s back as Sasha took Sage’s new beer from him with a sly smile.

Alice whispered in Nox’s ear so only he could hear in the loud music, “I’m not wearing any panties.” Nox turned quickly to face her closing his fingers tightly around what she’d given him knowing what it was now. He grinned at her before he leaned over and whispered into Sage’s ear. “You can finish this. Maybe I’ll see you around.” Nox handed Sage the second beer and took Alice off to the dance floor.

This time Sage watched as Nox and Alice waded into the crowd and got lost in the darkness. He felt a slight stab of disappointment as he sipped at the beer Nox had started.

Sasha gave Sage a wide grin. “You wanted to hook up with him.”

Sage shook his head. “I don’t hook up. You know that. He’s pretty though.” Pretty wasn’t exactly the word he would have used, but it was all he was willing to share with Sasha on the subject of his fancies.

Sasha laughed. “Do you want to dance? Bryan’s playing pool.” She rolled her eyes – her boyfriend was always leaving her for a good game.

Sasha and Sage danced to a few songs together, not the way Nox and Alice had. – their relationship was far too platonic for such closeness. Alice found them and pulled them both by the hand off the dance floor to find Bryan. She had a stupid smile on her face and her friend was no where to be seen. Sage was slightly disappointed he didn’t get to see Nox again.

Bryan was still playing pool. He was in the middle of a double or nothing game. They had to wait for his game to finish before they could leave.

Alice curled up to Sage as they watched Bryan clear the table. She put her head on his shoulder and looked up into his blue eyes. “He was so hot. Wasn’t he?”

Sage grinned. “He was. You were safe?! Did you have a good time?”

Alice nodded. “Yes. You should have joined us.”

Sage’s eyes widen in surprise but before he could say anything Alice’s eyes were closed and she was breathing heavily against him. Sage pulled her closer and held on tighter as she slept while standing up against him. It wasn’t the first time, and it probably wouldn’t be the last time. Sometimes he wondered who’s best friend he really was – Sasha’s or Alice’s.

  • The First Meeting

Clubbing was not something Sage did often. It wasn’t even something he wanted to do, but Sasha and Bryan had dragged him out for Alice’s birthday – she was turning 21 and instead of planning a big birthday bash Sasha was dragging the four of them out to go club hopping. Thankfully Sage didn’t have to work this weekend – it would likely be a very trying one, almost worse than work itself. Not that he didn’t like his job, because he did.

They were on their third club of the night. Alice was damn near drunk but she’d pulled them to the front of the line and leaned on the bouncer. “It’s my birthday. Can you let the four of us in?” She batted her eye lashes, handed him her license as proof and he let them in. It was the second time that night Alice had cut the line using the same ploy.

The usually quiet and reserved girl had become brazen and outgoing with a few drinks. Now that she was almost plastered she was very not herself. Bryan was in charge of his girlfriend’s sister. He and Sasha watched her, it had been Sasha’s plan to hook Sage up with her sister but Alice wasn’t interested. And Sage didn’t blame her, not with all the other people out there on this nice Friday night. He’d danced with five separate people in the same span of time that Alice had been looking for ‘Mr. Right’. She wasn’t looking for a husband – she was looking for a good lay – or so that’s what she kept saying. And as much as Sage enjoyed sex, he was not going to have a one night stand with his best friend’s sister – much less sleep with her at all.

Sasha and Bryan had slipped off into the throng of bodies on the dance floor leaving Alice in Sage’s capable hands. Rather his line of sight. She was down at the end of the bar twirling her long, straight, blonde hair between two fingers while she waited for her next drink. Twenty-one was such a weird age. This wasn’t the first time Alice had gotten drunk and it wasn’t likely to be her last – but this was her first legal drink. It made all the difference in the world to every 21 year old in the country.

Sage’s beer arrived just as a tall man curled around Alice. The tips of his hair were dyed red and the eyeliner was thick around his eyes. Sage watched as he whispered into Alice’s ear and she smiled happily at whatever it was he was telling her. The man brought his hand to Alice’s drink and took a sip of it with a frown. He called the bartender over with a wave of his hand and Sage saw the nail color matched his hair as he ordered another drink.

Alice was intrigued with him, but Sage couldn’t take his eyes off him either. His smile was bright, there was a tattoo on his right temple, but Sage couldn’t make it out exactly. And a scar running down his left cheek which oddly enough didn’t detract from the overall beauty of his well done make up and his perfect smile.

The other man looked up when Alice nodded in his direction and Sage’s eyes met the other man’s gaze. Sage smile and sipped at his beer but he never broke eye contact. The other man grinned at him and whispered in Alice’s ear and they both walked to the edge of the dance floor before Alice put her arms around his neck. Her body moved against his like she’d found the one she wanted to enjoy the rest of her night with. They had forgotten all about him watching, or maybe they hadn’t and were putting on more of a show than necessary.

Sage watched Alice and her friend. It was the best friend in him that looked after Sasha’s sister, but he watched the other man just as much – probably more.

Sage was on his third beer when Sasha wrangled Alice away to the restroom. Bryan was no where to be seen and Alice’s friend walked over to him and leaned against the bar and ordered two beers. He smiled at Sage and Sage couldn’t help but return the smile. He asked, “Enjoying the show?”

    Sage laughed. “I am.”

    “She your girlfriend?”

Sage shook his head. “My best-friend’s sister. Just looking out for her.”

The man leaned on his elbow and handed Sage the second beer. “So you checking her out?”

Sage turned to look at the other man with a grin. “No.”

He smiled at Sage but the girls had returned. Sasha took the beer from Sage and sipped at it. Alice was whispering into her friend’s ear and the look on his face said that Alice had said something worth listening too. He handed Sage the beer and leaned in to whisper. Sage shivered with the proximity of this colorful man. “You can finish this. Maybe I’ll see you around.” Alice tugged at the man and they waded into the throng on the dance floor. Sage lost track of them in the darkness and was slightly disappointed as he sipped at the beer he’d been handed.

Sasha gave him a grin.

The rest of the night was spent in that club. Sasha and Sage danced to a few songs before Alice found them and pulled them off the dance floor to find Bryan. She had a stupid smile on her face and her friend was no where to be seen. When they found Bryan they had to wait for his game to finish before they could leave.

As they all stood around waiting, Alice curled up to Sage and put her head on his shoulder and looked up into his blue eyes. “He was so hot. Wasn’t he?”

Sage grinned. “He was. Did you have a good time?”

Alice nodded. “Yes. You should have joined us.”

Sage could feel his eyes widen in surprise but before he could say anything Alice’s eyes were closed and she was breathing heavily against him. Sage pulled her closer and held on tighter as she slept while standing up against him. It wasn’t the first time, and it probably wouldn’t be the last time. Sometimes he wondered who’s best friend he really was – Sasha’s or Alice’s.

  • A Player

Since I came into my own I’ve never had a true relationship. I have friends. I don’t have many, and I don’t have family to speak of – at least not of blood. True now I do have blood relatives. I have Jace and Dorian. They are my family and my friends. But until recently there has been no one in my life that I cared for.

Sex was meaningless until Sage. Sex was a means to get close to someone, to feel loved and then to push them away so that they never got close. I was a player in the worst sense of the world. I would find a girl or guy and taken them back to their place, or worse yet hook up in the bathroom or the dance floor. I never asked their names, I deleted their phone numbers the next morning if they put them in my phone. I left before morning – never staying the night. All before I met Sage.

I met Sage on a different night than the Last Phoneix opening chapter. I’ll post that below from my PoV. I’ll post Sage’s PoV, and one from the god like narrator. But mine first.

It was Friday Night. Jace was married with a kid so he was out of the game. He didn’t even live in the City proper anymore anyway. Ant was off hunting whatever vampire his mother sent him out on and wasn’t here either. My friends were limited, not that I couldn’t have found my way to Gregory’s for a party. But I’d out grown their brand of fun. So instead I found myself at my favorite club to dance the night away before I was assigned some other mission which would take up all my time. Which was another reason I didn’t have many friends – I worked too much.

The music was loud and the beating pulse became mine. There was nothing more than me and the people on the dance floor that mattered. The patterns of people ebbed and flowed. The couples entwined themselves together. The solo dancers dancing with anyone who wanted to gyrate next to them. I was one of them, but I was looking for someone to have fun with.

A girl at the bar was twirling her blonde hair. She was leaning heavily on the bar as she ordered. She wore a short frilly skirt and a tight almost see through shirt. In the light of the bar you could see the color of her bra underneath.

I walked over to her and leaned against the bar wrapping my arm around her with a smile and she turned to look over her shoulder at me. I spoke softly in her ear. “Hey, Duckling. You look all lonely here by yourself.”

She smiled at me with great big blue eyes. “My sister is dancing with her boyfriend.”

Her drink arrived and she was about to take a sip when I plucked it from her hand with my crimson painted fingers and took a swallow. “You don’t want this.” I smiled at her and ordered a sex on the beach. “You should be drinking something far sexier than a rum and coke.” My breath was quick against her neck as I whispered, “Who’s your friend?”

She nodded towards the man I felt watching her more than he should. She smiled. “My sister’s best friend.” He met my gaze with a perfect smile that lit up dark blue eyes. I couldn’t see the exact color, I wanted to. But I had other plans that night.

“Let’s give him a little show, Duckling.” I purred in her ear and took her hand taking her to the edge of the dance floor. The music thrummed through my body as she wrapped her arms around my neck and pressed her body against mine like we were making love on the dance floor.

I felt his eyes on me, but I ignored the feeling of being watched so intimately. She whispered into my ear. “Do you like him watching us? We can move farther in?” To add emphasis to her question she ground against my leg which extracted a soft growl from my throat.

“It’s all good, Duckling.” I wanted him to watch.

We danced like that for several songs. The more she moved against me the hotter I got, and the more I was ready to leave this place and take her to her home. But her sister came and dragged her off to the bathroom in classic girl fashion. Her friend was still watching me and I smiled at him. I got a good look at the color of his eyes. He wasn’t shy that was for sure, but I wasn’t sure if he was checking me out, or his best friend’s sister. I asked him, “Enjoying the show?”

“I am.” He laughed softly like he thought I was funny, or maybe it was to cover up the fact that he’d been staring at me. I liked the latter part.

“She your girlfriend?” I asked flat out.

He shook his head. “My best-friend’s sister. Just looking out for her.” He confirmed what she’d said so at least they were keeping their stories straight.

I leaned down on the bar and ordered two beers. I had no idea how long the girls would be, and I was thirsty. I turned to look at him with a grin. “So you checking her out?”

He returned my grin with one of his own and there was no hesitation in his answer. “No.” The way he said it made my skin tingle. I definitely liked him looking at me.

I didn’t get a chance to do much more than smile back at him as the girls had returned and his best friend’s sister wrapped her arms around me and whispered into my ear while placing something in my hand behind me. “I’m not wearing any panties.”

My mind switched gears, and the cute boy with sapphire blue eyes who had been checking me out became a distant thought. I handed him the beer I’d taken a sip from and leaned in and whispered in his ear. I felt him shiver when my breath touched his skin. “You can finish this. Maybe I’ll see you around.”

The girl tugged at my hand and I obliged her as she waded into the throng of people and into the darkness. There was no show this time, not as she wrapped one arm around me and the other snaked between us to undo my fly. She was aggressive. I liked that.

I hadn’t had sex on a dance floor in a while. Usually the bathroom or preferred to take them back to their homes. But she was getting off on the public display and I was more than willing to participate.

A few songs later I was straightening myself out and catching my breath while she waded through the crowd to find her friends. I almost followed her, to see her friend again, but I didn’t want to look desperate. Maybe I’d see him here again. He looked like he could be fun.

    Meaningless

  • Hard Being Ordinary

This is so not a word I would use for my life, or myself. Hell I wouldn’t even describe my human boyfriend as ordinary in comparison. His family on the other side is. I’m not talking his immediate family – but his father’s family is as ‘ordinary’ as they come. This is not a slight on the Morgan’s no, this is just a statement. They are human. Everyday, nothing supernatural about them – ordinary. And there is nothing wrong with ordinary.

After the Last Phoenix is completed, I spent about two weeks living with
Sage – on a vacation of sorts – dealing with all the problems that presented themselves at the end of it. While I stayed with Sage I got to meet the Morgan’s over the Fourth of July. They had a backyard block party – barbecue, fireworks and the whole nine yards.

AJ has this all written down 17K+ words of nothing but that day. Nothing much happens, just family stuff – just life. If ya’ll are interested I’ll post it up here.

Anyway, you might be asking if Danny is a werewolf how are they an ordinary family. Basically it comes down to this. Rosella was born a werewolf. Danny was bitten and was changed into a werewolf. Their daughter Carla is a born wolf. Sage is adopted – thus not a wolf. But as you see in today’s scene that there is a lot more to pack ties than just being one of them. I’m still learning about what it all means. I can’t imagine what Danny’s family would be going through if they knew they were all werewolves.

While we were at the BBQ everything was normal – well not everything because it is so very difficult for me to be normal. My power is around me every moment – every second and I use it without thinking. I didn’t out myself to Sage’s extended family, but I could have. Danny got on to me about it, but I did save a kid while almost outing myself so I’m okay with that.

    Ordinary

  • Conspiracy – Pack Ties

I took his hand, and we walked out of the diner with a wave to Bonnie. It was a short walk to the train station and we went two stops down before switching trains and heading into another part of town.

Everyone knew the City was broken up into territories. What the humans didn’t know is that it had even more lines they didn’t know about. The Venatori controlled most of both the Upper East and West sides and all of Midtown. Vampires controlled all of Harlem, Manhattan Valley and Carnegie Hill. And the wolves controlled Hell’s Kitchen and Turtle Bay, and everything south of Midtown.

Sage got off the train in the heart of Hell’s Kitchen. We were in wolf territory. I pulled the hood of my sweat shirt up as I followed Sage. He held my hand like it was no big deal. He thought nothing was wrong, I hoped that the wolves didn’t think I was here out of context. It had been many years since I’d come into Hell’s Kitchen on anything but Venatori business.

The buildings looked familiar. Sage started into one of the four story apartment buildings I knew were wolf territory and I pulled my hand from Sage’s grasp. “Why are we going in there?”

Sage looked at me with pleading eyes. “Please. No one will hurt you. I promise.”

I took a deep breath and took Sage’s hand he had continued to hold out “Sage, what are you getting me into?”

“Nothing. I promise. It’s not going to start a war.”

“So you know where I am?” I was confused even more now.

“Yes. Please. Nox, come with me.” I sighed and resigned myself to follow Sage. I pulled my hoodie around me tighter like I felt cold, but I wasn’t cold from the air. It was old memories. I could feel the wolf energy prickling my skin. It wasn’t safe for me here.

Sage knocked on a door and pulled me against him and took my hood down. “It’s okay. I promise.”

I heard rustling on the other side of the door and then the door unlatched and a woman answered. She was wearing a small apron and covered in flour. “Sage. Darling, what a surprise.”

“Mama Rose, this is my friend Nox.”

I nodded to her and bowed my head. I could feel the power of the pack behind her. She spoke, “Come on in boys.”

She moved into the house and towards the kitchen and I followed Sage through the apartment after closing the door behind us. I saw pictures of the family on the hallway wall as we passed them. I stopped when I saw a familiar face and swallowed hard.  Sage was looking at me when I turned. “You okay?”

I nodded. “Yeah. Things make sense now. Or are starting to.”

Sage smiled and headed into the living room. The TV was on and a man was sitting on the couch. I stopped in the doorway and stared at the large Hispanic man watching television. “Adrian.” I whispered.

I looked at Sage, “Why have you brought me to your alpha? He is your alpha right?”

Sage nodded. “I’m not a werewolf if that’s what you are afraid of.”

I frowned. “I knew that from the get-go. But I didn’t know you were the foster son of Danny Morgan. When did they bring you in?”

Sage sat down on the floor facing Adrian. “When I was adopted by the Morgan’s.”

“You knew who I was the first time we met?” I asked. “When I was with your friend, Alice?”

Sage nodded. “I knew of you, yes. You are kinda a legend here. Danny works with you. Our alpha helped you, I know that much.”

“I paid Adrian to help me.” I qualified. “It wasn’t because he was a wolf.”

“I know. You’ve been sharing all these big things with me. This is all I have left. And your questions made me think you needed to know.” Sage frowned.

    “You are omega?” I asked.

But Sage didn’t have time to answer, Adrian interrupted him. “No. He’s not. He’s under pack protection until he turns, or taken as someone’s mate.”

    “He can’t turn. Adrian, he’s a path.”

Adrian smiled. “I know. He doesn’t. We’d have already turned him, he’s well past the age.”

There was one nagging question in my mind and I had to ask it, “Did you? with him?” Adrian was a psychologist by professional standards, but he was more of a sex therapist than any traditional one. I had paid him to teach me not to be a victim. It wasn’t about the sex, but it was still the same type training he did with some of his clients. It was how he met his wife. They ran the business together and shared in the kinkier side of it. Adrian was a dominant male, and he’d been my top for many years. Until I grew too powerful he said.

Adrian was smiling while he waited for my brain to refocus on him. He was used to my thought process even after the years of absence. He shook his head. “No.”

“Then why does he speak to me the way he does?” I asked.

Adrian’s grin grew wider. “I advised him how to catch you.”

“Catch me?” I sounded as confused as I was.

“He came to me a few weeks after you first met him in Aspect. When you went off with the girl. He said he’d met you in person. I saw how he spoke about you. I gave him a few pointers on how to act around you and treat you if he truly wanted to capture your attention.”

I knelt down in front of Sage who had been picking at the carpet he sat on. “So you don’t really want the control you were asking for? You were playing me?”

Sage looked up and I could see the tears in his eyes and I wanted to dry them. I didn’t want to see him sad. I had to look down at the floor. He put two fingers under my chin and made me look at him. “I liked how you reacted to me, how you’d smile and go with what I said. When I gave you the card and took …” Sage blushed but I wouldn’t make him say it here, if we’d been alone I might have. “I didn’t think you’d call me because I’d been so forward. Then I got the text you didn’t send me. But you called me afterwards. I like the power. But you are an alpha, I feel it. I couldn’t take control that was yours to have. The pack would kill me for overstepping.”

I smiled at Sage. “They will have to go through me to do that.” I turned around and sat down next to Sage and put my hand on his leg and looked up at Adrian who was smiling.

He chuckled and called out, “Rosella, you have raised the pup well. But I think he out grows us.”

Rosella came out with a plate of freshly baked cookies and placed them on the coffee table in front of Adrian. “He will always be my pup and always welcome here.” She gave Adrian a hard stare.

“He will always be welcome in the pack. But I think his standing will change.”

Sage got up on his knees and crawled to Adrian, “I can’t get any lower.”

Adrian put his hand on Sage’s head, “Not lower, little one.”

Sage looked up at Adrian, “What do you mean?”

Adrian just smiled. “I’m sure we will all see.”

Adrian grabbed a cookie and stood up. “Nox. It’s been a pleasure. Take care of my pup. Or should he be the one taking care of you?”

I stood up and offered my hand to Adrian. “I think we need to take care of each other, Adrian.”

He took a bite of the cookie with a smile. When he finished, he yelled, “Excellent cookies, Rosella.” He turned back to me, “And excellent answer.”

Adrian left the room and the house with little more than a fond farewell to Sage’s foster mother. Sage still sat on the floor on his hands and knees looking at the floor. I sat down on the couch and looked down at his bowed head, “You don’t have to stay that way, he’s gone.”

“He wasn’t the only alpha in the room.”

I laughed. “I’m not going to order you around. I am not pack. You do not need to heed in any terms.”

Sage looked up and shook his head. “You are pack. I feel it.” Sage sat back on his heels and put his hand against his heart, “I feel it where I feel the rest of the pack. Adrian considers you pack. You are pack.”

I sighed. “Fine. We’ll do this proper then. I yield my power to you and only you Sage Morgan. I am yours to command.”

There was a gasp from the kitchen from Mrs. Morgan as she eavesdropped on our conversation. But it was Sage who was looking at me with wide sapphire blue eyes, “Do you know what you did?”

I nodded. “Yes. I’m not pack so I didn’t feel whatever power shift you did, but I feel it’s different in the room now.”

Sage shook his head, “You are lower than me now? Why did you do that?”

“I am lower than you, but I didn’t sink to the bottom. I raised you above me. You command my power in the pack. Whatever that means since I’m not pack. I did it because you liked the way it felt to take charge of me. No one can confront you now about being controlling with me because I gave you my power to control.”

I took a breath and continued, “You could make a move with that power. If you do and we end this, you would be in a terrible situation. Unless you kept the power, and I then had no choice but to do as you asked with in pack laws. But I’m Venatori. My rules out weight your rules by the Clandestine Providence. I can’t do my job if you had complete control of my abilities.”

“Why though? We aren’t even dating.” Sage asked.

I smiled, and I leaned my forehead against his and whispered, “I like when you tell me what to do. I need you to.”

Sage grinned at me, “So even if I hadn’t brought you here you would have given the power to me?”

I sighed, “Not all of it. Even Adrian will tell you, I am not a perfect submissive. But I like when decisions are taken from me. So not having to worry about who is paying is a relief. My schedule is part of my coping mechanism to get through the anxiety of my nightmares and the daily changes of adult life. The less I worry about the better I feel, and the more time I can feel safe.”

Sage asked, “You have you all figured out don’t you?”

I shook my head. “No, Sage I don’t. I learn things everyday.”

He grinned. “What did you learn today?”

“So far,” I smiled, “I’ve learned I need to trust you.”

Sage looked confused, “You don’t trust me?”

I shook my head. “I trust you. I don’t want to trust you. I need to trust you. Like I need to breathe.” I emphasized want and need to make my point.

Sage smiled and took my hand, “Let me show my childhood bedroom.” We stood, and I followed Sage deeper into the apartment he grew up in. This was not what I expected on my birthday.

    The Last Phoenix (in order)

  • Symptom

AJ wrote about the first time I met Dorian and why I met him. It’s from the point of view of my five year old self. I’m gonna tell you what I remember from that day from my adult perspective.

The symptoms of my ability were volatile. As I said I was five. It was a few days before Halloween. I was looking forward to being a dragon for trick or treating. That’s one big difference about living out in the human world like I did before I was five. We got to be human. I would have been raised mostly human, if I weren’t a fire starter. Until I turned 13 or maybe never if my mother didn’t want me to be Venatori. I was half human. If I didn’t show signs of being a Magnus then I wouldn’t be where I am today.

I don’t think I regret it. But it makes me wonder if I’d still like myself. Or if I’d ever have the problems I do. But that really doesn’t matter – you can’t change the past.

So anyway, when I sparked. I didn’t know it then, I hadn’t known it until a few years later, but I had been seeing patterns everywhere for months after turning five. I didn’t know what I was seeing. I don’t know if I knowingly touched the fire in the air, or if it was an accident. All I know was I was scared. I needed to feel safe. And warm usually equates to safe – even now. Fire called to me and I pulled it towards me and when I had it in my grasp it jumped out of control and lit the curtains on fire.

I don’t know if that’s how it is for firestarters everywhere, but that’s how it was for me. It was something that I needed to feel safe. It’s probably why orange became my favorite color, why I tend towards fire now as my go to element to keep myself safe. It’s the one I use to show off the most with. Of all the elements to make me feel safe it had to be fire – all the more dangerous I become because of it.

Coming later in The Last Phoenix a scene where Sage and I have a conversation about what I would do if I had to live a human life. I won’t go on about the scene, but I have given it a lot of thought.

If I had to start a new life as a human, without the Venatori in my life, I’d probably have to go to college. Not because I like learning, but I can’t imagine my education in the Academy would really give me the experience required to actually do much more than survive.

I mean I could go live in the mountains and life off the land. Be a hermit, have no money, but that would be lonely and very not considerate of the man I’m hopelessly falling in love with.

I could do the whole fitness trainer thing, but I don’t know if I could really be much help in that. I’m not great at teaching.

I could be a chef or a sous chef. This I could do without school, but it would look better to be a professional in that industry by going to culinary school. Which would require acceptance into it. I’m sure I could wow the interviews and such but my cooking is all self taught. I didn’t even have parents to learn from – completely self taught.

There are business degrees and chemistry that could work for me in regular school.

I could live off my boyfriend. Thought again not really fair to him. I could work for Il Cane. Not that she actually hires out any of her work – but that is an interesting concept. I might have to talk to Ant about that one day. In jest of course. I don’t think Cari Giovanni needs my help hunting vampires.

  • Minimal

I have very minimal taste. I like things clean and simple and my apartment is that to a “T”. I’ve actually written a post about it before. I thought AJ had a floor plan and I know we have a good share of the interior of it picked out which is described in the post linked in.

But I live a minimal life. If it weren’t for the furniture and decor of my apartment everything I owned could fit into two duffle bags and one backpack. AJ has a pinterest board just for me.

That includes some personality traits, items I actually own, things I like, different looks, some of my favorite things. As it’s titled – All things Nox. Sage and Dorian both have one as well, but Dorian’s is sparse and Sage’s currently is mostly superhero shirts for inspiration.

This is my favorite of Sage’s shirts

  • Conspiracy – Breakfast Date

We walked through the halls hand in hand. Sage headed for the elevator and I followed him a step behind him. He pressed the button and then he squeezed my hand, “What’s bothering you?”

I grinned. “Is it that obvious?”

    “You are trembling.”

“Afraid of heights. This elevator is the worst for my fears. But I’ll be okay.” I smiled at Sage.

The elevator doors slide open and a familiar face stood inside. I smiled as we stepped inside. “Hey, Dorian.”

Dorian smiled. “Nox. I see you have company again.”

“Dorian, this is Sage Morgan.” Dorian offered his hand as I continued. “Sage, this is Dorian Vega, my mentor.”

Sage spoke first as he took Dorian’s hand. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”

“All good, I hope.” Dorian shook Sage’s hand.

Sage laughed. “Yeah, how your helped him through trying times.” Sage wrapped his arm around my waist and rubbed the small of my back and I froze. My heart raced and my breathing increased. I tried not to let any of it show. Dorian’s eyes went wide but Sage didn’t seem to notice as he was looking at the statue in the middle of the lobby. “Nox really make that down there?”

Dorian nodded and Sage pulled me closer when he realized I was having a panic attack. He stopped rubbing my back and just held me against him. I smelled his laundry detergent on his clothes, and the lavender and jasmine of his shampoo and bodywash. Leaning against him I buried my face into his neck. I smiled against his soft skin.

Dorian answered, “He did. It was spectacular. No one believed a ten-year-old did it.” Dorian chuckled, “You handle him well.”

I laughed. “You have no idea, Dorian. No fucking idea.”

Sage kissed my cheek. “I try.”

We hit the level of the Academy and Dorian stepped off the elevator. He turned around and held the door open as he spoke to Sage. “You take care of him on his birthday. Make sure he doesn’t do anything stupid.”

“Yes, sir.” Sage smiled against my neck. When the door closed Sage asked, “Do you want me to stop touching your back? I keep forgetting.”

I whispered in his ear, “No.”

Sage pulled me away so he could see my face. “No what?”

I smiled and gave him a soft peck on the lips, “Don’t stop.”

Sage grinned, and I leaned back against him and buried my face in the crook of his neck. It was not my usual pose, it felt good having someone taller than me for once. His hand went under my hoodie and my t-shirt to the top of my waist band and his fingers rubbed against the rough puckered skin of the slash marks that ran just below the line. My bodied stilled and my breathing increased but I hummed into his neck encouraging him despite my bodies reaction. Sage whispered, “You know, I don’t think I’ve ever been with a guy who was quite so open about public displays of affection in today’s world.”

I hummed against his neck and bit it. “I usually play up the gay. Though, I’m not playing anything right now though.”

The elevator doors opened at the lobby level and I untangled myself from Sage’s body and we disembarked. There was a small crowd waiting for the elevator but that was the extent of the people who saw us up close and personal.

Sage took my hand with a smile. “There’s a great place across the street.”

I laughed. “I don’t think I’ve ever been there for breakfast.”

    Sage smiled, “It’s fantastic.”

We walked across the street when the lights changed down the block. Traffic was never empty in the City, but at least we could cross without getting hit.

The door gave off that familiar little tinkle as we opened it and stepped inside the old school dinner. The red neon letters outside in fancy script read “Bonnie’s Diner”. Bonnie had owned the place for many years. I had come here many times throughout my days in the Academy to eat and study where no one would bother me.

Bonnie looked up from reading the morning paper and blinked at us. She smiled. “Never thought I’d see the pair of you together. Take a seat boys.”

Sage laughed. “You are a regular too?”

“Just not at breakfast.” I smiled as I sat down with my back to the door.

Sage nodded his head to move in. I laughed. “If you are going to sit with me we should sit on the other side then.”

Sage gave me a strange look but backed up from the table so I could get out and switch sides. I smiled at him and took his hand to follow me in. “I don’t like my back to the door, but I was letting you have the better seat.”

“Ah.” Sage grinned and squeezed my hand. “I never understood the convention of sitting across from someone.”

Bonnie came over and stood over the table. “It allows for easier and more intimate conversation. I don’t suspect either of you boys care too much for intimate conversation. Always coming in with your books and your laptops to work.”

I grinned up at her, “I like intimate conversation. I like Sage.”

    She asked, “Your usual, Nox?”

I shook my head. “Not quite. I’ll take steak and eggs and whatever fresh fruit you have. Coffee please and a glass of water.”

She looked over at Sage with a smile. “Your usual, hun?”

“Yes, ma’am. Though his sounds reall good.”

Bonnie left and took our orders with her. She brought coffee over and poured two black cups before she left. My leg pressed against Sage’s and it was difficult to move without elbowing him. Sage had elbowed me three times in that short time. “Maybe this isn’t as easy as I’d like it to be,” Sage said.

“I don’t mind.” I leaned back and put my arm around Sage on the top of the booth’s bench. “Is this how you sit when you are on dates?”

Sage nodded. “I like to touch my partner. Playing footsie and holding hands is nice and all, but I’d rather be able to do this.” He leaned over and kissed me hard on the mouth. My body reacted and I brought my other hand up around his neck holding him close and deepening the kiss. His tongue darted into my mouth and I let out a small moan.

By the time Sage pulled away my knees felt weak, and I had to catch my breath. Sage’s lips were swollen from kissing me and I bit my bottom lip at the look on his face. God, I wanted him. I grinned at him. “I didn’t expect that.”

    Sage grinned. “It’s your birthday.”

“I could think of something else you could do for my birthday.” I said with a wink.

Sage leaned in and whispered in my ear, “Nope. Not yet.”

I laughed. “I didn’t think so.” I took a sip of my coffee and smiled at Sage. “I am good with that.”

Bonnie brought our breakfast and sat it down in front of each of us with a tall chocolate shake with two straws.

I looked up at her and rolled my eyes. She interrupted before I could say anything at all. “It’s your birthday. Indulge me.”

“Yes, ma’am.” I picked up the shake and took a sip of it, then smiled at Bonnie.

Sage took it from my hand and handed it to Bonnie. “Bring it back later please. It’ll ruin our breakfast.”

I looked at Sage with a grin, “That’s kinda why she brought it out now. I don’t indulge on such things but when I do it’s before.”

Sage smiled brightly at Bonnie, “Please?”

“You don’t have to bring it back at all, Bonnie.” I said. I didn’t need ice-cream.

Sage looked at me with a wide grin, “Of course she does. Just not for breakfast.”

I nodded to Bonnie, “You heard the man.”

She raised an eyebrow behind Sage’s back questioning the situation I only smiled back. Sage turned to his own plate and pressed his leg against mine and picked up his fork with his left hand and his right fell to my knee and he squeezed, “Eat.”

I winked at Bonnie and did as he asked. I grinned at Sage, “It’s better that we sat on this side, anyway.” If we’d sat on the other side, we’d be bumping elbows as we ate. Now we could hold hands while we ate, and that’s what we did as I slide my hand between his hand and my leg and curled my long fingers around his.

Sage grinned down and looked at the color on my nails. “You always match them?”

I shook my head. “No, I’m still sporting the usual club look. Nails change as they chip.”

Sage set his fork down and pointed to a chipped spot on my index finger, “Like that one?”

I nodded, “Yeah. Now it’s going to drive me crazy. Thanks.” I stuck my tongue out at him.

“Don’t do that.” Sage warned with a smile.

    “Why not?” I asked playfully.

“You might not get it back.” He teased as he popped a forkful of scrambled eggs and bacon into his mouth.

I grinned at Sage. “That might not be so bad.”

It stabbed the steak I had already cut on my plate and pulled my attention back to my food. “Eat.”

    “All right, all right.”

We ate in relative silence, holding hands and our legs pressed against each other in the booth. Several people had come and gone in the time we ate our meal.

When Bonnie placed the check and another chocolate milk shake on the table I reached for the check and Sage moved faster than I had expected and was pulling it from underneath my hand and handing Bonnie cash. “I got it. I asked you here remember. No macho games. Whoever asks pays.”

“What if we don’t ask, like it’s a agreed upon stop because we were hungry?” I asked playfully as I pulled my hand back.

    Sage laughed. “Always plan everything?”

I shrugged. “Not everything. I’m not good with surprises honestly.”

“I could tell you I would rather always pay. Would that bother you?” Sage asked with a smile. I wasn’t sure if he was being serious or if this was some test.

“No. It wouldn’t bother me. But it makes me wonder how much more you’d want to control.” Was Sage one of those men who had to be in control? Did he need someone who would obey everything?

The look on Sage’s face was a little worrisome. His eyes were warring with something inside. I put my hand on his knee and smiled. “I can give you control when we are together. I don’t need to be alpha male.”

Sage smiled back, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “You are already an alpha.” He stood up and offered his hand. “I want you to meet someone.”
