• The Venatori Lifestyle

Nox: What I’m about to write, or rather I’m going to let Sage type is not what I first thought of when the prompt came up. But I don’t want to hide my daily prompt behind a password so we’ll go the secondary route – how the Venatori lifestyle looks from the outside. Because to me it’s perfectly normal, but to someone who grew up mostly normal, I’ve been told it’s rather “socialist”.

Sage: And Nox, they are right, it is socialist. You work hard, you gain status, but yet everything you do is for the whole, and no matter how hard you work you still have to take what the government gives you. You are either Scrin or Venatori (hunter). There is nothing in between, what if you do both?

Nox: No one does both, you can’t focus on hunting and be a book worm. The two ends don’t meet.

Sage: You do it. I mean you walk and talk and breathe these so called monsters. You make them your friends, you sleep with them. Hell, Nox, they confide in you. How many people can actually say they know anything about the bond between a human and a vampire, much less that there are two different types? Vampires don’t know that there are two different types of Chevalier. You do… You know how they are made because Ant told you. You know fucking secrets the monsters don’t even know. So what does that make you? Scrin or Venatori. Cause you don’t hunt monsters. You seek justice whatever that case is.

    Nox: You calling me batman?

Sage: No, you don’t wear black and a cape and don’t have cool toys. Your more like an x-men. I see that blank stare. I’ll show you later. But back to the topic :P The Venatori pay for everything, you don’t even know how to balance a checkbook, can you write a check? Most Venatori don’t even know how to cook for themselves. If you ask me you are all a bunch of teenagers who are entitled to whatever they have.

Nox: You aren’t wrong. But it works. There are no starving Venatori children. There are no homeless Venatori. Venatori who haven’t been exiled or exiled themselves that is, what they do outside our world is not our fault. It’s humans then… I don’t want for food, or shelter, or clothes. I was essentially an orphan, no parents, no love, no nurturer but I was taken care of when my mother didn’t want me anymore. I had stability and a good education by the same school, the same teachers, I didn’t bounce around from home to home having to make new friends everywhere I went. I’m not saying it’s perfect. Cause it’s not. But it works for our small race.

Sage: We’ll have to agree to disagree on this.

Nox: When do we ever agree love?

Sage: Let’s take this to another place “duckling”

  • Bombs – Captured

The substation was encompassed about half a block with lots of high voltage signs all over the fence. It was easy enough to hope the fence even with the barbed wire at the top, but I didn’t have to, there was a hole the size of a man burnt into the fencing. As if that wasn’t enough of a clue to what did it we were definitely on the right track. The fence had already cooled, but that didn’t mean anything really.

Before I went in I sent Walker a text

    Me

He’s been here. Fence is burnt/melted. Stay alert!
    11:32 AM

I didn’t wait for a response. Either Walker got it or he didn’t. We both knew our job, and I trusted Walker to be safe and do his. He knew we needed Emerson alive. I hoped he knew anyway. I didn’t think Dae’lin had paired us together just because Walker needed help hunting in the city.

The substation was mostly electrical equipment and I really had no idea about most of it. I only knew that if I wanted to blow it up I wanted something central and that would cause the most destruction. So I wound my way towards the middle of the network of cables and capacitors and whatever else was sitting in the substation.

It was eerily quiet. The gravel under my feet was the only sound. My heart rate was steady as was my breathing. This was where I lived. I thrived on the hunt. It was dangerous. I loved the hunt. It was where I felt most alive.

I rounded the corner and saw a figure slip between a row of boxes. I moved slowly, each footstep carefully placed so the gravel wouldn’t shift beneath my feet and make a sound. I pressed my body against the last box before the figure had turned down and I wove a reflective surface with air and water. I could watch without being seen.

A man dressed in black stood near one of the large conduits. I glanced around me and knew that we had to be in the center of the construct. It would yield the most damage. On the other end of the corridor of boxes I saw Walker move into a closer position. I watched as Walker continued to get closer. He wanted to take him down physically. No guns were drawn, he wasn’t going to kill. I wondered if Walker had ever gone up against a dragon before.

I got closer. Emerson was busy applying the C4 to the conduits and connecting wires and preparing his bomb. I watched Walker and he pantomimed a distraction and wrapping the dragon up. I nodded my ascent. I understood.

Walker tossed a rock away from him and Emerson turned in that direction. I wove air in front of Walker and myself and then in one quick weave I engulfed Emerson in a vaccuum. He started to gasp and struggle for breathe and I then gagged him with earth and air and let him breath again. I bound his legs and when he tried to move he fell to the ground face first.

I stepped out from my spot. “You had to feel the bonds on your feet Emerson.”

Walker came up to him too. “What did you do to him first?” he asked.

“I sucked all the air out of his area. I didn’t want him to breathe fire.”

“Human form Dragon’s breathe fire?” Walker asked. It was a question I actually got a lot.

I laughed. “You saw the scar on my leg right? Dragon fire from a human form dragon.” The look on Walker’s face said it all. It was a mixture of wide eyed surprise and shocked horror and neither one of them was wrong.

We weren’t taught in the Academy that dragons in human form could breathe fire. My theory on that was because you didn’t normally survive dragon’s fire. It was like napalm, once it got on you it burned through your clothes and into your skin and to the bone in minutes. Water makes it spread like oil and it’s so hot you can’t fan the flames out, it eats everything in it’s path. But I’m not a normal hunter as I’ve said many times already, my ability gives me a different advantage. I suffocated the fire with earth air and water and I still had a functioning leg thanks to my quick thinking. Courses would be reviewed and the information was added, but Walker didn’t benefit from the knew knowledge. Red tape and all that.

I smiled at him, “Tell me about it.” I squatted down in front of Emerson who’d now had managed to sit up. His face was a mass of cuts and scrapes from falling into the gravel of the substation.

“I’ll ungag you if you promise not to spit fire at me.” He glared at me and I shrugged. “Suits me just fine. We’ll take you in and you can wait for your trial. I’m sure The Dragon’s just going to love you for getting caught.”

His eyes went wide at the mention of The Dragon. We helped the man up and we let him walk. “We can do this the easy way or the hard way.” Walker added.

Emerson shook his head. I dropped the gag and Emerson stretched him mouth from the restraint. “If I talk he’ll kill me.”

“Attempting to blow up a substation is gonna at minimum put you in prison, but since you are a dragon you fall under the Clandestine Law, and we get to sentence you. You know what Venatori to do people who disrupt humanity right?”

Emerson nodded. “I want a deal.”

I laughed. “This isn’t a cop show. We’ll take you in, but you will talk to us with or without a deal.”

We took our dragon in. He was meek and cooperative. We called in our bomb squads and they’d take care of the c4 and the other explosives he’d planted. We removed everything but the clothes on the man’s back before we left with him back to HQ. We even gave him the address where he made everything. I called Armand while we walked back.

  • That Conversation (NSFW)

    Sage
    Hey love. You busy?

    Nox
Never too busy for you love.

    Sage
    Can you talk?

    Nox
    Sex talk?

    Sage
    Yes

    Nox
I’m in my bed with a sleeping 3 year old so as long as we don’t devolve into masturbation I think we are good.

I can see your blush all the way over here, it’s lighting up the sky. I’d love to kiss it away.

    Sage
Kissing it away will make the chat devolve as you put it.

    Nox
All right, love, what did you want to talk about?

    Sage
You probably just say another flash.

I was talking with Dad last night…

    Nox
About? Wait, you talked to your father about sex? with me? to your father?

    Sage
    Does that bother you?

    Nox
No. How did you manage not to die of embarrassment.

    Sage
We have an open door policy cause it was about sex, but it was also about pack.

    Nox
    Ah…

    Sage
He had asked how we were doing. I told him it was good. Sex was different than with other people. And I told him what happened that day I introduced you to Adrian.

    Nox
    What he say?

    Sage
He was surprised Adrian allowed it. I told him he wasn’t there. He asked me specifically what you said.

    Nox
    Did you remember?

    Sage
I remembered enough that Danny quoted it word for word to me.

    Nox
Do you know what it was meant for?

    Sage
Yeah. Now. I don’t want a submissive or you to be my omega. You are an Alpha. I’m human. Danny said I would feel that weight. I do, it’s suffocating.

    Nox
Do you want me to take it back?

    Sage
Would you be mad if I said yes?

    Nox
No. I won’t be mad, but it changes how you can act around the pack.

    Sage
You still want me to decide on things, I pay, I can make the decisions.

    Nox
It won’t change anything Sage. It was protection from the pack I was giving you not the metaphysical submission. That was a side effect, something I didn’t even fully understand.

    Sage
You didn’t do everything I said.

    Nox
I know. It hurt sometimes, other times it was like I was dying. But it was all part of it I was willing to protect you from the pack.

    Sage
I think I’m good with the pack. I honestly don’t think anyone in Adrian’s pack is going to mess with you.

    Nox
    I’m not worried about me

    Sage
That’s what I mean. If they hurt me, harrass me, they have to deal with you. You are afraid of Il Cane. Every vampire is afraid of her too. But everyone who knows who I’m dating that is in the pack looks at me and says “You’re dating him?” In that scared omg voice, “what’s it like?”

    Nox
Can you hear me laughing? Well probably not since Drake is a sleep still. You are telling me wolves are afraid of me. Why would they be, I’m nothing?

    Sage
What I tell you about that?

    Nox
I’m not degrading myself, stating a fact. I’m a low level Venatori who actually tries to help them, what do they fear from me.

    Sage
It’s my turn to laugh now. Nox they know you will do everything in your power to help them. It’s when you decide that they aren’t worth helping that they fear. They’ve told me stories of your actual kills.

    Nox
Oh geez. What are they saying?

    Sage
Too long to type out those things on my phone. But they know you are ruthless when they cross the line. That’s what they fear.

    Nox
So I’m all sweet and cuddly until they piss me off – are you calling me the Hulk?

    Sage
The fact that you even know who the Hulk is gives me hope. Nox, I’d like to give the power back.

    Nox
Say the words love, you know them. I’m sure Danny told you what to do. You only have one bond given so you don’t need me there.

    Sage
That’s what Danny said. Okay hold on.

Fuck! That was intense. You okay?

    Nox
    I’m fine. I didn’t feel a thing.

    Sage
Why do you think that is?

    Nox
I’m Venatori? My shields are up? I don’t know.

While we are talking can we discuss something that you never really answered the other night

    Sage
I don’t think I can get any more embarrassed then I was when I was talking with my dad.

    Nox
I asked you, if you wanted a third, a fourth? Another couple, random people, an open relationship? You can watch me masturbate all you want, but that’s going to get old. I want to provide an out for your kink but I don’t like watching the way you do.

    Sage
I don’t do one night stands, so anything we do would have to be more than just a random hook up.

    Nox
That complicates things. We could look for another couple into our kinks.

    Sage
    I don’t have any kinks.

    Nox
    Can you hear me?

    Sage
    I don’t. Not like you.

    Nox
Sage, being a voyeur is a kink.

    Sage

    Nox
It’s not bad. But it’s a kink. I just know what I like done to me, and what I like doing to other people. That’s our difference.

    Sage
I don’t know what to say then.

    Nox
Do you want to look for more people to add to our sex life?

    Sage
Would you be mad if I sad yes?

I’m sounding like a broken record

    Nox
Love, I can’t be mad at you for asking for what you want in bed. Asking is better than taking, or and a hell of a lot better than ignoring the fact you have kinks.

    Sage
This is why my other relationships failed isn’t it. Because I didn’t know what I wanted.

    Nox
I don’t know Sage. You are my first relationship.

    Sage
    Thanks! No pressure! :)

    Nox
I’m gonna screw up. We both will. We can explore together. But I want to do it together. No asking Uncle Dusty about it. Ask me. We’ll talk. You see something out there in your peeping that gets you hard. And you might like to do it to me, or have done to you. Say something.

    Sage
On that note. I’d very much like to watch you come tonight.

    Nox
You are so much braver on here. Let me go into the bathroom.

    Sage
[You’ve just answered a video call]

Nox: Hey love, you hear me all right?

Sage: Yeah. Can’t see anything. It’s dark.

    Nox: Working on it.

lights turn on and Nox is standing completely naked in front of the camera

    Sage: Fuck!

Nox: Thought you might like that.

Sage: You plan on taking a shower?

Nox: Easier to clean up, I’m naked and it’s not like I haven’t done it a billion times before.

The water was warm as I stepped under it. I had another surprise for my love hiding in the shower. But that was for later. I let the water wash over my face and body. I could hear Sage’s breathing increasing and I wasn’t even doing anything sexy. Well not intentionally.

    “You see okay?”

Sage nodded, I could barely make out that from the distance, “You are too far for me to see love, you have to use your words.”

“Yes. I see fine. You are fine, hot, no fucking hot.” He said from the phone sitting across the room on speaker.

I dropped a small dab of body wash into my palm and spread it out as I took my cock in my hand. I’d been hard since we started talking – the anticipation of the sex talk had me ready and eager. Even if he’d mentioned our sex life to his father.

Sage groaned as I stroked myself. I leaned back against the cold tiles and wished I’d warmed them with the water before hand, but it was too late now the cold tiles were going to have to be part of the scene now. My head fell backwards as I just let the sounds of Sage’s breathing envelope me. My hand was his even though he’d yet to touch me. His breathing was erratic. I wanted to look at the screen but it was too far away, but I was pretty sure my love was touching himself.

I was close and Sage knew it. “Come for me Nox.”

I shook my head, “Not yet.”

    He begged, “Please.”

And it was all I needed to spurt cum all over my hand. I kept pumping until I was well good and done. I heard Sage groan out his own release. I was still too far away to see but I loved the sound, the way he called out my name, the breathless notes ecked out of his throat as he shot his load.

When Sage’s breath had returned to him I was standing in front of the camera picking my phone up to sign off for the night, “I should go to bed.”

Sage grinned at me, “Good idea. Me too.” He blew me a kiss, “I love you Nox.”

I smiled. “I love you too. Night love.”

  • How to Keep Your Creator Up at Night

AJ’s never really talked about her writing process, I know it intimately, so I’ll share with you some of the shit I do to keep my creator up at night. AJ’s always been a big day dreamer. Looking back at all the times as a kid, the world dissolved into dreams AJ is just nodding. Big day dreamer. Though never when it matter, it’s always in alone time, bedtime becomes a big thing, and creates insomnia moments when AJ’s working a particular thread.

Scenarios as AJ likes to call them are things we go through at night. It can be something already written, something being worked on, or something that could happen in the future. AJ likes to have write interactively and has found a partner in crime that will let me (and him) explore our personalities outside the confines of a true world. Needless to say it’s a blast.

I’m not comfortable sharing those moments mostly because they aren’t real for me in this blog, they are scenarios AJ’s running to explore, thus I don’t get to feel them, or react to them. Except in the instances where it blows my story to hell and back. But that’s how AJ finds holes, or exciting new ideas to throw at me. The whole Dragon’s able to control Cesari came from one of those things. Me having adoptive children stems from those things. AJ had a list of names for my biological children. Still possible for them to come about, but we’ll see, the idea that I need a woman right now in the grand scope of things is kinda not working for our dynamic as of yet. Though it could. It’s sketched into the possible realm now. But we have to see how things play out.

Which leads back to the whole keeping AJ up all night. One conversation Sage and I have becomes something else. It morphed into a situation so intense AJ stayed up most of the night working through it. AJ slept on and off there are some vivid images from the lucid dreams, but we woke up a little groggy and in much need of caffeine. Sage, myself and AJ all agreed in those few panicked moments that couldn’t happen. When AJ is in tears it’s either very moving or so sad. It doesn’t take much to make AJ cry, but this wasn’t crying sob oh I’m sad, they were my tears. That was how real the pain was last night.

AJ is my creator, I live and breathe because of AJ. But if that happens dear one, we are done. I won’t talk to you ever again. That’s horrible.

I know I’m not elaborating, and I really don’t want to. But lets say that me and Sage over will never be in my cards. Not unless I’m dead… but that wasn’t what happened.

  • Rockstar

It was a Tuesday night. Nox was bored. I had to work the next day, but Nox said we wouldn’t be out late. He just wanted to dance. It was more like he needed to dance. Life in the AU building was never easy for him. His nemesis Aaron apparently tried to intimidate him again with a lost breakfast when he and Walker were working on a case.

But the sad thing was, Nox knew everyone that worked in Aspect on this Tuesday night. There was no line at the door, but the bouncer smiled at Nox and looked him over like he was a piece of meat up for auction. I wasn’t sure how I felt about people always looking at him, he was mine to watch. I did what any other jealous boyfriend would do, I wrapped my arm around his waist and pulled him along into the club. Nox was pliable, he came without any hesitation. He was letting me lead everything tonight. We went out to eat. He let me order for him. And just to prove a point he ate everything I ordered him – which included a greasy bacon and cheese hamburger and french fries slathered in chili and cheese.

He ate everything. How can one person make eating everyday things look sexy? It was damn burger that dripped and oozed and he didn’t drop a single drop of it on his pristine white t-shirt I made him put on. He wasn’t wearing his typical hoodie either, or long sleeves. A few of the scars on his back peaked out from under the short sleeves of the t-shirt and the khaki shorts he wore didn’t hide the scar running up his leg. And yet everyone stared. I still couldn’t take my eyes off his face though. He didn’t let me do his make up, but he wore thick eyeliner and the tips of his hair were colored in every color under the sun. He was fucking stunning and he looked around like no one was staring. It drove me crazy – he drove me crazy.

The music inside of Aspect wasn’t quite as loud as it was every other time I’d been there, and you could actually walk through the place without elbowing someone. A server here and there all smiled and waved at Nox. He spared them a friendly wave and continued on our journey to the bar, where my love leaned against the bar and was staring at the bartender. He was wearing a fishnet tank top that really left nothing to the imagination and a pair of black tight pants. His dark hair was all over the place with his blond highlights. His wrists were covered in leather cuffs and he had a tattoo on his shoulder. But nothing distasteful. He turned to the customer he was making a drink for and his eyes were lined with eyeliner thicker than Nox’s. I watched Nox look at him, he was hot – not as hot as Nox, but right now I was a little biased. The keep came over and gave us a smile, “What can I get you?” He wiped his hands on the back of his pants and laid down two napkins on the bar.

Nox was looking at me. “Two Irish Reds,” I answered. The bartender gave us another quick smile and turned to get the beers. I smiled at Nox and whispered, “You can go dance for me.”

Nox chuckled in that way he did when I was told him to do and it was exactly what he wanted to do. The dance floor was relatively empty. There were a few people dancing, but they were couples. But the great thing about Nox, he didn’t need a partner. I could watch him dance all night and he’d be happy as a clam out on the dance floor.

Our beers were set down on the napkins and I felt the man leaning down on the bar on his elbows. He spoke softly, for once the bar tender didn’t have to yell to make conversation. “I wonder if he fucks as well as he dances.”

I choked on the beer I just swallowed. Coughing up what my lungs didn’t like as never fun. I turned to look at the hot bartender and saw him watching my love with a smile. He’d said it to provoke a reaction. I could play the game. I turned back to watch Nox dancing all alone on the floor. I said one simple word. “Better.”

Sadly, the bartender was better at the game than I was. “I’d like to see that.”

I turned to face him. He was watching me from the corner of his eye while he ‘watched’ Nox on the dance floor. Nox and I had talked about a lot of things. But this still wasn’t something we were ready for – hell we hadn’t even gone all the way yet. I knew my face was flushed. “I can’t help you with that tonight. But….”

I took a sip of my beer and set it back down. Walking that short distance to my love felt like the longest walk I’d ever done. I knew not one but two sets of eyes were watching me. I wrapped my arms around Nox’s waist and I pulled him close to me. He fell into my rhythm with ease and pushed his pelvis into me and bent his knees slinging an arm over my shoulders. He never even really looked at me. I knew he’d seen me, but he was lost in the music. He moved freely, but when he smelled me that smile I only saw when I was near slid to his lips and he immediately made it look like sex while we danced. I knew he would, it was all part of my plan.

    Nox whispered, “You all right?”

I looked up across at him but his eyes were closed, his lips slightly parted and I couldn’t help but lean forward and slide my tongue inside his mouth. He reciprocated by opening his mouth and meeting my tongue with his. He moaned through the deep kiss.

When we broke part he chuckled against my lips, “That didn’t answer the question?”

“No? I smiled at him. He looked across the floor towards the bar to the keep watching us. I could still feel his eyes on us, it was a slow night and there wasn’t much else going on. I buried my face against Nox’s neck and he wrapped his arms around me and held me tight.

“Why were you choking?” Nox asked softly in my ear.

“He said, he wondered if you fucked as good as you danced.” I said into Nox’s neck. I felt him shiver under my breath.

    “What did you say?”

I bit Nox’s neck and sucked softly. He always pulled out my brazen side he let out a groan and rubbed against me. “I said ‘better’”. I confided still pressing my fast into his neck. He couldn’t see the blush in the dim light, not that he’d ever say anything about it.

    “And then?”

I took a deep breath and spit out, “He said he wanted to see that. And then I came out here.”

Nox chuckled, “You are such a tease.” He untangled me from his limbs and took my hand and pulled me towards the bar where our beers waited and the hot bartender. I looked over at Nox and he was grinning at the bartender who was watching us. His eyes never left the other man’s but he clutched my hand tight. I kinda liked that Nox was being protective and possessive.

He leaned against the bar and pulled me close, I stood between his legs as he sipped at his beer and smiled as he asked, “Did you enjoy the show?”

I watched the bartender smile and wave his hand like it was nothing. “I could do better?”

Nox chuckled. “Oh really?” There was a split second before Nox reached across the bar and grabbed a fistful the mesh shirt in his hand and leaned across and planted a kiss on the bartender’s lips. I moved tighter into Nox’s body as I watched them kiss. I knew I’d have to go to the bathroom to adjust thing but I didn’t care in that moment as my cock got harder with each passing second. Nox knew how to kiss, the bartender reciprocated with as much tongue and teeth as Nox gave him. Nox was hard against my thigh. I bit back a moan before it escaped and betrayed how much I liked watching Nox with another man. Nox knew, his hand gripped my hip and hard and he held me close against him pressing our groins together almost to the point it hurt.

They parted a little breathless, their lips swollen from kissing. Nox’s hand slowly let go of the fabric as he grinned, “I don’t know, I think he’s still better.” He grabbed my button up and pulled me in and kissed me. His tongue jetting inside my mouth and biting at my bottom lip with an eager growl. He whispered, “Let’s go home.”

I couldn’t speak, so I nodded. But I grinned at the bartender. Nox smiled, “Maybe next time, rockstar.” He did kinda like a rockstar was supposed to I wondered if he played in a band. That could be fun.

  • No Soup For You!

    You get none.

AJ doesn’t watch Seinfeld. But she knows that one. Sage is supposed to be able insert quotes into everyday conversation. That only really works if you remember those things. AJ has a shit memory. Classic lines stick and favorite movies too. But the random off the wall quote? Not gonna happen.

And those same quotes are going to be cliche’s too… lucky us.

AJ needs to gather a list of movie quotes for Sage to throw out. So AJ’s gonna do that today. Collect quotes while not writing, working, and dealing with the impending migraine. You can follow along:

    Nox Sétanta

    Hey love

    Sage Morgan

Hi love, getting technical are we?

    Nox Sétanta

☺ yes and no, I’m not a complete moron I do know how to chat
I figured we could chat about “things” and you can blush to your hearts content and I can’t distract you with other “things”

    Sage Morgan

You are an evil man you know that right?

    Nox Sétanta

I do. But you love me for it

    Sage Morgan

What do you want to talk about? I know I’m going to regret this.

    Nox Sétanta

Talking is good love. And we can have a good time talking about things, and afterwards we can have an even better time. I just want to talk with you love. I want you comfortable but more importantly I don’t want to scare you away.

    Sage Morgan

You won’t scare me away Nox. I doubt there is anything that you like I’ve not watched.

    Nox Sétanta

Watching is not the same as doing.

    Sage Morgan

I don’t know if I can do any of those things.

    Nox Sétanta

That’s why I want to talk about it.

    Sage Morgan

*sighs* Alright. I’ll cave. What topic would you like to cover first?

    Nox Sétanta

Why don’t you tell me one of the scenes you watched you might like to try?

    Sage Morgan

Nox… I don’t know. You tell me what one of the scenes I told you about you’d like to try?

    Nox Sétanta

Well I don’t like women’s underwear… sure it’s hot but I’m not going to wear it.
The being fucked by a strap on? well I’ve done that, but you don’t exactly need a strap on now do you? Would you like to watch that happen to me?

    Sage Morgan

    Would that creep you out?

    Nox Sétanta

Nothing about you creeps me out love
I would very much like you to watch me in whatever way you’d like.

    Sage Morgan

But that would require you to be with other people.

    Nox Sétanta

Sage, love, if you are watching me I don’t care. We don’t have to have a relationship that is normal to people. Do you want a third? a fourth? a couple? You want to pick them up at a club and just fuck? You want to have have more of a relationship?

    Sage Morgan

    I don’t know….
I’ve never had a relationship with someone who isn’t a little skeved out by the idea that I like watching. That I’d rather watch than participate.

    Nox Sétanta

You will participate though, won’t you?

    Sage Morgan

You mean will I have sex with you?

    Nox Sétanta

    Yes.

    Sage Morgan

    I like sex.

    Nox Sétanta

Will you participate in those activities?
would you tie me up, if I asked you to?
would you edge me? would you participate in my kinks?

    Sage Morgan

I don’t know. I don’t know what your kinks are.

    Nox Sétanta

Well I just gave you two of them.

    Sage Morgan

I don’t know, Nox. I don’t think I’d be any good at them.

    Nox Sétanta

I’m not asking you to be good at them. I’m asking if you’d play with me, or is our sex life going to be flirting, vanilla sex and having other people fullfill our needs?

    Sage Morgan

This is what I was afraid of. You’d get angry. I can’t be enough for you Nox.

    Nox Sétanta

    I’m not complaining Sage.
I’m understanding how we will work.
How sex will work. I find the idea of not being everything you need a bit hard to digest too. You aren’t the only one feeling inadequate.

    Sage Morgan

I never meant to hurt you.
    Maybe this won’t work…..

    Nox Sétanta

fuck that! You’d give up on this? This is just sex. We’ll find our rhythm. We’ll find a way to do that, but you don’t want to talk about it, that’s what’s going to make everything fall apart… I have to go

    Sage Morgan

    Nox?

    Nox Sétanta

    What?

    Sage Morgan

What would you have me do once I tied you up?

    Nox Sétanta

    Now you want to talk?

    Sage Morgan

Please, Nox, I’m sorry. You are intimidating. Your sex life is full of experiences I don’t have. You are gorgeous, there’s no way I’m going to hold your attention for long.

    Nox Sétanta

And your kinks gave you a wide bearth of things to think about. Do you get off when people are hit? Because there is no fucking way I’m letting anyone hit me for sex. I like pain, but I can’t handle being hit.
    I have fears too Sage.

    Sage Morgan

Okay. How about this then? Why don’t you find a babysitter and come over tonight? We’ll watch some videos – together. See what you like, what I like. We can set limits as we go through.

    Nox Sétanta

Are you going to talk to me?

    Sage Morgan

Yes, blushes and hardon and all

    Nox Sétanta

☺ Alright. I’ll come over early with a case of Irish Red, and I’ll cook for you too.

    Sage Morgan

Okay. I’ll see you tonight 5?

    Nox Sétanta

    5.
Bye love, I really do need to go. I’ll let you know if D or my dad can’t watch Drake.

    Sage Morgan

Okay. Bye love. I’m sorry Nox.

    Nox Sétanta

It’s over love, no more sorries.

    Sage Morgan

    okay. see you at 5

  • Control

AJ and I have been talking a lot about control lately. We can thank Alex and his writer for the conversations. But if you’ve read The Last Phoenix you know there are some pretty big elements in it for me and my love.

For those of you who haven’t, why the hell not? It’s free, it’s digital – go download it and stop waiting for me to post it.

Control is how I get through everyday. My schedule is pretty set, my food is set. I live life between workouts, food and try not to go insane when things don’t fall out of place. Sage is new to my life, and he likes control. He likes a great many things I’m going to understand. Things I never thought about. Now, it’s all I can think about. But that’s not for now.

I need sometimes for someone to take control, to make me do something just because they want me to. Jace has been my big go to for that. He drags me home to his family. He’ll drag me dancing, or to a movie. Things that I could do on my own, but sometimes the monotony of everyday life gets too overwhelming that even a jump from the building doesn’t help.

Sage I think is going to help a lot in my issues, if I don’t scare him away.

  • Bombs – A Vampire Haven

I lead us to the subway station to get to our next destination. The train rattled into the platform and Walker didn’t say anything until the train started moving again. “How do you know when to not shoot first?”

I smiled as I sat across from him. “I don’t shoot at all unless they are trying to kill me. Most confrontations can be handled without violence. It’s easier if you have contacts of the species you are hunting to help out. I know all the Alpha’s here in the City. I may not have a personal number for them all, but I know who to contact in case I need it. Same goes for the vampire Prince’s. I don’t like Desmond much, but if necessary I can get him involved. But more importantly I know people even Desmond will listen too. Even the CCB has people you can call in every city in the world.”

“How the hell did you make those connections?”

I smiled. “I walked the streets. I listened. I asked questions. I made people trust me. The rogue wolf leader I knew from when I was a kid. I met the son of Il Cane shortly after I finished my first hunt. I met Desmond through a baby vampire who was ghouling his friends. Thankfully we got his friends clean, but Desmond taught the vamp to behave himself. I don’t approve of his methods, but he’s not dead dead so I’m okay with it. Dominick, I met through Liam who I hunted because he went nutso on a train while high on some drug or another and partially shifted.”

“Just don’t shoot first ask questions later. Ask the questions before you even get in that situation.” I recommended.

“How do you know we won’t get into a shooting match now?” Walker asked.

“I don’t. But the place we are going is a safe haven. Violence is kinda prohibited. The owners will shoot you no questions asked.”

    Walker laughed. “Go figure.”

I stood up as the train came to a stop and we left the train car to head up to the street level. We were in the heart of vampire territory now. Vamps weren’t up yet, still daylight. Though there were a few daywalkers in New York, but not many. Most of the New World daywalkers lived in Sanctuary – a place you have to travel through the shadows to get to. But that’s what the rumors were and I’d never actually seen it. Though Ant said it was real – his father lived there. I believed Ant.

The building we walked up to was a typical residential apartment building. But most of the windows were blacked out. Vampire kiss’ tended to use this joint more often than other species. But it was safe for anyone who needed it.

The front door was unlocked and I pulled it open with ease. “Wow. Didn’t expect it to be easy to get in.” Walker said with awe in his voice.

“It’s a safe haven, can’t lock doors for that.” The hall way was empty but the room at the end of it was bustling. It was a common area for the building – a tv room and game room rolled into one. It reminded me of the common area in the dorms back at the Academy. But we didn’t go there. We took the stairs up to the third floor where our would be dragon accomplice was billing his cell phone too.

I knocked on the door. We waited. I knew we’d have to find the manager. Thankfully I had an in here too. “Let’s go find the proprietor of this lovely establishment.”

“You know way too many people.” Walker interjected as we walked down the stairs to the common room.

“I don’t really know that many people. I just know the right places for supernatural activity.”

    “Does your father?”

“I have no idea. He hunts differently.”

“Shoot first, asked questions later?” Walker asked.

“Yep.” We stepped into the common room and nearly every eye in the room turned towards us. Only one pair didn’t. I headed for him.”

The man sat in a chair and stared out at blank wall. He looked lost in whatever thought he was having. I waited for him to acknowledge me standing next to him.

He asked, “What brings you Venatori to my humble abode?” He sounded like an old vampire in the creepy 50s films.

“Are you putting on a show for my friend?” I asked.

A small smile split his lips and his fangs showed through. “Maybe.”

“Don’t scare him too much, please.”

Armand stood up in that graceless motionless way that old vampires could sometimes. Armand blinked at us gray white eyes of the blind. He was blinded by holy water when he was a boy. He was the only daywalker I knew who didn’t live in Sanctuary. “What can I do for you my boy?”

“We need to get into an apartment on the third floor. The Dragon is using the occupant for some reason and I need to figure out what that is. Valentino has been delivering messages here from him.” I said.

    “Follow me.” We followed.

Armand didn’t knock he didn’t use a key, his hand passed through the door and he unlocked it from the other side. It saves having to have a master key I supposed. I’d seen vampires do similar tricks before.

Walker stared in open amazement. “Damn.”

“It’s not so fun when you are whisked away in the shadows and wind up in Italy or something. Gut wrenching not cool.” I knew that from experience.

Armand smiled as he opened the door and let us walk inside. It was a studio apartment and it was clearly being used by someone making bombs. There was no hiding it. There were chemical bottles on the table with C-4 wrapped in paper bags waiting to be used. Even Armand gasped. “This is worse than violence on my premises.”

“Do you know who lives here?” Walker asked.

“Emerson. Gideon I think is his last name.” Armand said.

“So same guy who owns the phone.” Walker noted. “What’s he bombing though?” He walked over to the table and looked at the papers lying on it. Underneath all the printed bomb making instructions was a map of the city’s infrastructure. Walker cleared the map of obstruction and saw several x’s marked on it.

Armand was looking around the apartment. While we examined the map. I asked, “Do you remember what it was that Naomi said The Dragon was doing?”

    “Ruining human society.” Walker said.

“No, she didn’t phrase it like that. She said something about money and power. What if she didn’t mean the kind of power that you get from taking over human society. These are x’s. I think are power substations. Blow one up and half of New York City goes out. Blow them all up and the City will be dark. It will cause chaos until they are repaired.”

Walker sighed, “We can’t hit all these locations quickly. We need more hunters.”

I nodded in agreement. “We need hunters who can remove bombs or at least contain them. Fire Magnus and fire squad members would likely be the best ones to get out here.” Walker put his finger on the nearest X. “This is the one I would do last. We should go here. We don’t know how long he’s been a this. But power hasn’t gone down yet.”

“I’d put them on a remote detonation and do them all at the same time.” I said.

Walker looked up at me. “Have you thought about blowing things up before?” He grinned.

“No. Nothing so mundane. I once planned a war scenario in our Strategy class in the Academy using New York City as a basis for my world take over. It’s what I did.”

Walker raised an eyebrow, “What else did you do?”

I smiled. “You think someone took my ideas?”

“No. Well maybe, but what else would you do to take over the world.”

“My goal wasn’t to take over the world. It was to disrupt it and by taking out every substation in New York City, the stock exchange would be down for an indeterminable amount of time and if not relocated quickly chaos would ensue. We were paired in teams. Another team took out all the power plants in the United States using coordinated attacks.” I grinned, “The teacher didn’t much like our plans. Said it was too far fetched. And this after the coordination of 9/11.”

Walker nodded. “She used your demonstrations as examples of excellent planning and great foresight two years after you took it.”

“So we go here before he takes out the substations then. Coordinated attacks.” Walker grinned.

“Alright.” I called Dae’lin and told her the plan. She sent teams of hunters out to the other locations marked on the map. We would stop this plot by The Dragon. But we needed to find him. And I didn’t think these little things were going to get us anywhere near him.

Armand stood outside in the hall and frowned at us as we stepped outside closing the door behind us. “I will need to alert the enforcers of this.”

I nodded. “I understand. Vampire territory. I need Emerson alive if possible. I don’t know if Tony will do as I ask since he’s breaking vampire law not dragon law at the moment. But please tell Tony things are bigger than just one dragon blowing things up. He knows how to find me if necessary.”

Armand nodded. “Il Suo Compagno will heed you Venatori, as do we wall when you ask, upon penalty of Del Figlio.”

“Cari send’s Ant to do her dirty work now?” I asked.

Armand laughed. “No. Il Cane gave New York City to Del Figlio. He is Master here.”

    “Why did she do that?”

“I am nothing but a pawn in the night. The queen does not consult with the pawns. Her knight however makes peace with the Venatori. He was rewarded. The Prince is not happy Del Figlio rules now.”

“Desmond always thought he could control Cari. He’s never been successful in controlling her son.” I smiled. “Thank you for your assistance Armand. How can I repay you?”

Armand laughed. “Has my price ever changed young Venatori?”

I shook my head and offered Armand my left wrist. He took it in his hand and turned so he could feed easier. Before he bit, he chuckled, “One day it will be from your neck I feed.”

“Unlikely, Armand. The last vampire I let bite me there ended up in my bed. I do not think you swing that way.”

Armand laughed as he pierced my wrist with his fangs and sucked. The euphoria of a vampire’s bite was the reason that vampires had been romanticiszed throughout the centuries. They were killing machines, but the sex and the allure of the bite is what drew people to them. There were religions based around the bite of a vampire. The Eternal Chruch was the most famous.

I closed my eyes and thought of my blue eyed boy. I would not think of bedding Armand – not when I had something better to look forward too.

Armand withdraw from my wrist and was chuckling at me. “That was a first, my young Venatori.”

    “What was?” I asked.

“A glimpse into your mind. You never share so deeply. Del Figlio would have blushed.”

“Ant can’t read my mind while he feeds Armand.”

“He was pretty in your mind. Those blue eyes, I’ve seen before in your head. Dreams or visions I couldn’t tell, but before today they were there.”

    I frowned. “Are we even?”

Armand nodded. “We are. I love the magic in your veins. I can survive for days upon this one feeding.”

“Glad to be of service Armand.” I gave him a flourishing bow before heading for the stairs.

Walker fell in beside me with a curious look. But he didn’t start speaking until we were blocks away. “All those Italian names means Vampire heirarchy right?”

I nodded. “Il Cane is the Council’s Enforcer – Cari Giovanni. Il suo Campagno is her mate – Antonio Giovanni. Del Figlio is her son Anthony Giovanni. Ant is Master of New York City it seems while Desmond is Prince.”

“Aren’t they the same thing?” Walker asked as we headed for the substation closest to Emerson’s apartment.

I shook my head. “No. And yes. They are technically the same thing. But you know there are three kinds of vampires right?” Walker nodded so I continued. “Cursed vampires don’t have masters or princes. They are usually fairly weak but they are usually the ones we hunt. They fall neither under the Council or the Elders. Masters of cities or regions are Primeval – Cari and now Ant being the exceptions to that rule. The Elders allowed them control of a region because they are Masters in their own right and while not technically living vampires they share their blood. A Prince is what the Council sets up for the embraced bloodlines. They are who are supposed to control the cities vampires. New York City is unique that it has all three types of vampires. Places like Denver and Dallas the Embraced vampires run out all other vampires. San Francisco and Detroit are run solely by Primeval vampires they let lesser vamps in they only kick out those that would hurt their power.”

“How do you know all this?” Walker asked. “It’s not things we learned in the Academy.”

I smiled. “I told you I listen. Everyone wants to talk about themselves. All you have to do is ask.”

“Why do you let vamps bite you? Aren’t you afraid you’ll die?” Walker asked.

“The first time I got bit yeah. It wasn’t a pleasant bite, it was meant to kill me but it didn’t. The second time I offered the son of Il Cane my blood as a peace offering. We ended up in bed despite his orientation. He can’t control the bite’s allure as well as he should because he is primeval, but not primeval. He like Cari is one of a kind. Ant was born a vampire, but because he was born of an Embraced vampire with all the bloodlines including primeval he can’t walk in the daylight, another of the side effects of his birth is he can’t control the power of his bite. And I don’t have a problem with men and when I pushed the seduction farther he went with it.”

Walker laughed. “So you turned a straight guy gay?”

I shook my head. “No. I believe the term is heteroflexible.”

Walker and I continued walking he sighed. “There is so much I don’t know.”

I laughed. “And why would you know anything about alternative ways of life unless you were curious about them.”

“How did you know?” Walker asked.

“That I like men?” I asked. Walker nodded. “My first hard on was for a guy. But my first sexual encounter was with a girl.”

I nodded towards the direction we needed to. “The substation is around that corner. Split up or stick together?” I asked.

Walker looked around. “We’ll find him faster if we split up. Meet up here in 20 if we can’t find him?”

“Sounds good.” I went left and Walker went right. We moved silently like we’d been trained.

  • Pillow Talk (NSFW)

The past few days had been a whirlwind. Meeting Nox at Aspect had changed Sage’s life. In that short span of time, they’d seen each other once or twice a day, shared a lot of meals, had epic talks – more talks than Sage had in nearly any other relationship he was in before. Sage had a government contract that would last for too many years because he’d gotten caught, but he could have a job with the Venatori.

The Venatori were like a fairy-tale come to life. He knew they were real, but even with Danny working with them he’d never met one. But apparently he had, while in the Apex Unlimited Building he lost count of how many people he saw with the cross sword tattoo at their right temple. All identical. No variance, exactly the same. It was uncanny. It was kinda creepy.

Sage had promised to look after Drake. But Dorian and Kai had pretty much guaranteed that the little dragon would be safe. Dragons – what the fuck!

But now things were all over, Nox was in a room with an orange door. Sage had followed the other man but the door closed and locked behind him with an “IN USE” sign glowing red and “Warning” flashing underneath it. But Sage wasn’t the only who had seen Nox, Dorian was there and tapped Sage on the arm and beckoned him to follow him. They opened up a door and went upstairs. There were a few chairs and a large window looking down into the room Nox was. There was a panel in front of the window but Dorian didn’t go anywhere near it.

We watched. When the fire around Nox started I almost tried to break the window, but Dorian just whispered, “Just watch.”

Sage moved closer and looked down at the man who had pretty much captured his heart with his pain and charisma. The fire didn’t touch him, but it swirled around the room, then it started to thunder and rain and the wind whipped inside. It was a chaotic mess, but at the center of the storm Nox stood untouched.

Dorian had moved to Sage’s side. “He’s stressed out. A metaphorical bomb was just dropped on him. He needs time to think.”

Sage didn’t look at the other man. “Can I help?”

Dorian chuckled. “I was hoping you’d ask. And it’s asking a lot. But you handle our friend well. Let him stay with you till after the Holidays. If he’s here everything will push his buttons, and he’ll be in a room like this trying to stay sane.”

“He can stay with me. If he wants to, but if he doesn’t I can’t make him stay.” Sage said.

Dorian laughed. “I think you under estimate the power you have over him.” Dorian tapped my shoulder again and we went down stairs where we talked with Nox.

Nox was more than eager to be away. What Sage found the strangest was that Nox picked up a bag from inside his closet and gathered Drake’s things into another bag and he was ready to go. He asked, “You always have a bug out bag?”

Nox smiled that grin that was all charm, bright and wide and his eyes sparkled mischievously, “You make it sound like I’m one of those preppers.” He wrapped his arm around Sage’s waist and smiled, “I never fully unpack. You never know when you have to leave on a hunt. Shall we?”

Sage took Drake’s bag and they headed down to the nursery rooms, which to Sage looked fairly normal except Sage knew better. Somewhere in these halls someone beat kids. The fury that rose inside at the thought of someone doing that to a kid was insurmountable. Sage would kill the man if he ever saw him. Maybe he could find out and send the police after him since the Venatori really had no intention of doing so.

Drake hung between their hands as they left the building. They took the stairs. 50 flights of floors. It was easier than Sage thought it would be – going down always was.

Being with Nox was easy. Having Drake along made the conversations light and child friendly. But the stolen glances between Sage and Nox spoke volumes about what any alone time would bring. It was both exhilarating and frightening. Sage was terrified of having someone staying with him. Was Nox going to expect him to entertain him – for a week? All day? Shit, there was so much he didn’t know. Were vampires going to pop into his house unannounced? What about all those werewolves around his home. Would they want a Venatori in their neighborhood? So many questions and so few answers.

By the time they reached Sage’s house he was worked up. Drake curled around Nox’s leg while they waited for Sage to unlock the door. Sage was frazzled and he dropped his keys. Drake was the first to pick them up and he handed them back to Sage with a smile and then curled around Sage’s leg. The hug made Sage smile and he patted the little dragon on the head and managed to unlock the door.

Sage opened the door and they all filed inside. Sage flipped on the entrance light and looked up the stairs and then turned to ask Drake. “You want to choose a room?”

Drake’s eyes went wide, “My own room?” He asked.

Sage nodded, “Sure thing, it’s yours whenever you spend the night. We can even decorate it for you.”

That made the little dragon smile. Sage took them upstairs and opened both doors to his guest rooms. There was a bathroom he told Drake he could use in the middle of the night.

Drake didn’t really care which room he had. He entered the first on and never even looked at the second. He climbed into the bed and smelled the pillows. Then turned around and lifted the blankets and crawled in. Sage watched for a few moments and the dragon was smiling as he drifted off to sleep. “That was quick.”

Nox was standing behind Sage waiting for Sage to finish. “He and I can share space for now.”

Sage shook his head. “No, he’s so eager to have his own room. Besides I thought you’d stay with me.” It brought heat to Sage’s neck and cheeks and he hated that the idea of Nox staying with him made him blush but Nox only smiled before he responded.

“I didn’t want to presume.” Sage almost melted with the smile. How could a man like that be so disarming and yet everyone he knew didn’t like him?

Sage walked across the landing and opened the door, “This is my room.” Sage gave Nox a quick tour of his room before they went down stairs. Nox having declared he was hungry.

Sage had no food in the house, so they ordered out. Pizza, Nox oddly enough didn’t say anything about what was on tap for dinner. He did order a high concentration of vegetables on one Pizza. The delivery guy was going to wonder what was going on. No one in this neighborhood ordered that many vegetables. Most of them being werewolves and all.

Sage thought it might be awkward while we waited for pizza to arrive, but Nox kept up a non-stop chatter in the kitchen. Sage stood in the doorway to the living room watching him move through the cabinets and cupboards. He frowned at the fridge contents. Nox declared, “I’ll go grocery shopping tomorrow.” He looked up at Sage with a grin, “And I’ll cook you that lobster.”

“You don’t have to.” Sage said shaking his head. “Really. Anything will be fine.” Sage was looking forward to having Nox cook for him again. So far it had been awesome. Sage was sure that lobster was overkill. Nox just grinned at him though. “I have to work tomorrow. I can’t go with you till after 5.”

“I can entertain myself, love. You do what you have to, I’ll manage on my own.” Sage didn’t realize then what that meant. That week he didn’t see Nox except for in the mornings for breakfast. Nox made him lunch, and then they spent the evenings together after collecting Drake from school.

They had a lot of interesting conversations during the days Nox stayed with Sage. But for Sage none really compared to that first night after Drake went to bed after dinner.

Nox went for a run after dinner and Sage got to spend time with Drake. When Nox got back all sweaty from his run, he put Drake to bed, and then went upstairs to take a shower. Sage had gone upstairs with Nox to show him where everything was. It never ceased to amaze Sage how easily Nox fell into things in his life. Before Sage could close the door and leave Nox to his shower, Nox started talking. “I don’t have to stay here, Sage. I can find a room someplace.”

Sage turned and faced the shower and found Nox pulling his clothes off, he wasn’t looking at Sage, so he wouldn’t see how badly he was blushing. Sage could feel the heat rising, and the he wasn’t sure how it was possible but it rushed other places as well. His pants were uncomfortably tight now as he watched Nox undress. Even the scars littering his body – especially – his back didn’t detract from his overall beauty. He was a gorgeous man. Sage knew he worked hard for the lines his body made when he moved. The perfect amount of veins over his muscles. A light tan, but you could see his arms and legs were darker from the sun that rest of him, but not much. Sage couldn’t help but stare as Nox stepped into the shower and turned on the water, closing the curtain halfway so the water didn’t splash everywhere.

He repeated. “I can go somewhere else, Sage.”

Sage cleared his throat. “No, it’s okay.”

Nox chuckled on the other side of the shower curtain. “If you are sure.”

“It’s good, Nox.” Sage said as he stepped out of the bathroom. He quickly changed out of his jeans and t-shirt and climbed into bed to read a book in his boxers. If it weren’t for the vision he’d had and the water running in the bathroom Sage might actually have read a page – instead of the first line until Nox walked out of his bathroom wearing only a towel wrapped around his waist. His hair was wet but there was no color in it. Blonde tips were scattered through his hair. He wore no make up but he still gorgeous.

Nox walked to where his things had been dropped on the floor and grabbed a pair of boxers and a tank top before the towel dropped. His back was to Sage and Sage couldn’t help the fury at knowing what had happened to his back. But there was so much else to admire as Nox pulled the boxers on then the tank top. He was covered and Sage was disappointed. Nox was comfortable in his own skin. He hadn’t actually been trying to tease Sage, at least he never acted like he was teasing Sage. Was he? Nox laid down the other side of the bed, he flopped down actually and Sage bounced a little from the added weight. He asked, “What ya reading?”

Sage showed Nox the title “Star Wars”. The man nodded and asked nothing more but he moved closer to look at the page Sage was currently having no luck reading. Funny thing was there was probably only one sentence on the page. Nox smiled. “You having a hard time sounding out the words?”

Sage looked confused at Nox. He flopped back on the pillows on the other side of the bed. “You’ve not flipped any pages since I got out of the shower. Am I distracting you.” Nox purposefully stretched out, his hands behind his neck, to accentuate the muscles in his arms and elongated his torso. He looked irresistible and he knew it. That was teasing, nothing before said he’d been teasing Sage and that made Sage want to pull the covers up to his eyes and hide.

Nox grinned and sat up and pulled the covers down on his side of the bed and crawled under them. His arms were still behind his head and he stretched out under the sheet and blankets. Sage couldn’t help but stare wondering about that long lean body. He just saw it, but now it was covered and he wanted to unwrap him like a present.

Nox whispered, “Tell me what you are thinking when you look at me like that?”

Sage covered his face with the book and slide down in his blankets and tried to hide. Nox leaned over and kissed Sage on the cheek. “Night, love.”

And Nox moved back over this his side of the bed lying on his back. Sage snuck a glance at the man from behind the book and felt a stab of regret. He put the book back on the night stand and turned off the light. They laid in bed for what had to be an hour. Sage was sure that Nox had drifted off to sleep the way he was breathing. Sage rolled on to his side and watched the rise and fall of Nox’s chest. Sage whispered, “I was thinking how much I wanted to unwrap you like a present.”

Sage was certain he saw a smile creep over Nox’s lips in the dim light of his bedroom. “You can unwrap me anytime you want Sage.”

Sage jumped from Nox’s whispered voice. Like a bomb had gone off. He could feel the blood rushing to his face. Nox never opened his eyes, he never moved. The rise and fall of his chest remained the same. “I thought you were asleep.”

    “Too early to sleep.”

Sage frowned, “They what are you doing?”

“Seeing if you’d get brave and answer me.” Nox smiled, this time he was certain of it. “Listening to your breathing change as you watch me. Smelling your room, and how your scent changes when you are aroused.”

Sage stammered, “I’m not…” He was lying, he knew that and Sage flopped back on his side of the bed. “I like watching.”

That must have peaked Nox’s attention. He shifted in the bed and Sage clamped his eyes tight, he didn’t want to see Nox looking back at him. He hoped he hadn’t heard him, but obviously he had.

He whispered from across the bed. “What do you like to watch?”

Sage could feel the heat rushing everywhere. To his ears, and neck and especially his cock. It twitched at the word watch and Sage was sure Nox chuckled under his breath at his reaction.

Nox whispered again, “Would it help if I didn’t look at you?”

Sage nodded his head, but he wasn’t sure he’d actually tell Nox anything. But Nox got out of the bed and padded over to Sage’s closet and a tiny light popped in above his hand as Nox looked for something. Sage saw the light flick out and Nox padded out again and sat down on the edge of his side of the bed and held out one of Sage’s ties “So you know I’m not looking at you.”

Sage tried to speak but nothing came out. On the second try he stammered. “You… want me to … blindfold you?”

Nox whispered, “Yes. If you’ll talk to me.”

Sage took a deep breath and nodded. “Okay.” Nox wasted no time walking around the bed, he climbed over top of Sage to sit down on the other side of him with his back towards him. And waited for Sage to put the blindfold on. Sage just stared at him for several minutes. “You really want me to do this?”

“Yes. If it will help you talk to me.”

Sage laughed but it was shaky, “What do you want to talk about?”

Nox turned back and looked over his shoulder. “About what you like to watch. About what you like in general. Sex, in particular, but anything will be fine. I just want to talk with you. This happened so fast. We don’t know each other. Not really. And here I am staying with you for a week plus.”

Sage took a deep breath and let it out slowly. He didn’t say anything in return, he looped the tie around the front of Nox and the other man turned to face away again. The tie was silky to his fingers as he wrapped it around Nox’s head over his eyes and tied a loose knot. Nox’s hands went to his eyes and adjusted the fit then chuckled, “You have to do it tighter than that.”

Sage sighed and loosened the knot and made it tighter. There was a lump caught in Sage’s throat as he finished tying it. Nox’s fingers splayed across the tie and he turned to lay back down on his side of the bed, his hand groping in the dark to find his pillow and get comfortable again. Sage watched with interest as Nox stretched out again, throwing a leg out from under the blankets to keep cool. Sage couldn’t help but stare.

Nox chuckled, “I know you are staring at me. So tell me what you are thinking.”

Sage gulped and turned to look at the face of the man. His features were shadowed in the dim light, he couldn’t see his lush lips, or the slight bent to his nose. The scar on his cheek was entirely hidden in the shadows of night. Sage whispered, “Can you form one of those balls of light again?”

As if by magic – well Sage guessed it was magic – the light formed above Nox, “You can move it, it’ll stay.” He said softly.

Sage took the small orb, it was warm against his fingers, but not hot and he moved it above his head and behind him, then decided he wanted it on the other side of Nox, and tossed it softly and stopped and light everything perfectly. It wasn’t too harsh, too bright, and it didn’t cast shadows against Nox’s body.

Sage just stared at Nox. Nox licked his lips as he waited and Sage’s cock twitched. This wasn’t about sex… well not really Nox wanted to talk and all Sage wanted to was watch him lie there.

Nox cleared his throat and Sage jumped. “Sorry,” Sage whispered. “I was just thinking about how much I just wanted to watch you. Every little detail about you.”

A smile slide across Nox’s lips. “What do you want to watch specifically?”

Sage could feel the blush rising again and he nearly choked on the words as the come out. “Touching yourself. Stretching like you were but naked.” Sage felt a little braver. “I could have watched you take a shower and been happy.”

    Nox grinned, “Why didn’t you?”

    “I….” Sage stuttered. “I don’t know. I didn’t think it was appropriate.”

“I undressed in front of you, Sage. You think I would have minded you watching me?”

Sage shook his head. “It wasn’t appropriate. I don’t want a one night stand.”

“I don’t either. We need to take the sex slow for me, but that line is a home run, Sage, not any of the other bases.”

Blood rushed everywhere and Sage couldn’t help the soft moan that escaped his lips. Nox smiled and Sage wanted to bury his face in his hands, he did but then he remembered Nox couldn’t see his blush anyway. Couldn’t see the tenting of his boxers.

“Could I watch you … touching … yourself?” Sage asked slowly and in a hushed whisper.

Nox nodded, “Yes, but after we talk alright? Tell me about how your day was Sage.”

Sage had to readjust, but he nodded. He realized Nox couldn’t see him. But he started telling Nox about the things he didn’t know about. The things he was happy with Trix. A few things he and Jack had talked about. Apparently he was holed up in a hotel finally with wi-fi and needed to chat to someone about something other than vampire business. Sage told Nox how odd it was to hear Jack’s voice. He didn’t sound like that in his head.

When he was done rambling, Nox was smiling and staring straight up. Sage asked him, “Dorian said they dropped a bomb on you today. Which is why you created that fire storm. Do you want to talk about it?”

Nox’s smile turned to a frown. He shook his head, “No, but I will. Talking is good.”

Nox didn’t hesitate when he started telling Sage about the Dragon Council. About his meeting with the lesser dragon, and then the big reveal at the end before he walked out where they told him he had a twin sister who was dead now, and that the woman who had been his therapist since he was six, was a dragon, and she was the one to kill his sister. She almost killed Nox. Which had Sage fuming and he was about to say something until he saw Nox trembling.

Sage touched his arm and Nox jerked away before he realized it was just Sage and relaxed back into the tender touch. Sage moved closer and laid on his side next to Nox. Nox liked to touch. Sage knew that already. Sage whispered, “What do you like?”

Nox chuckled. “I like a lot of things. But I don’t want to scare you, nor do I want you to think I need those things. My biggest turn on is pleasing my lover. I don’t need to get off to be happy as long as you get what you need from me. I don’t like to be hit, not even playful slaps on the ass. Normally I’d say don’t touch my back, but we’ve already seen that you can. And I want you to touch it as much as you want, even if I freeze every time. Don’t stop.”

Nox sat up and pulled the tank top off and adjusted the tie when it shifted. Sage’s mouth went dry, and he watched intently. Nox wasn’t shy that was for sure. He pushed the covers off and Sage had to move some so he wasn’t buried underneath them. Nox arched his back and removed his boxers. He wasn’t being seductive, only undressing, but Sage groaned at the sight. He was so graceful and lithe. Sage loved the way Nox’s body moved, he could move anyway and Sage would probably drool.

Nox was fully erect and leaking. The length of him was thick and Sage wanted to take him in his mouth. Nox spoke softly, “Not yet, love.”

Sage groaned. “What do you want to talk about?”

Nox smiled. “Tell me ten things about you you think I should know.”

Sage sighed. “I don’t know Nox. I’m not good at this.”

    Nox snickered. “I’ll start then.”

    Sage nodded, “That could help.”

“Ten things you need to know about me. Ten things you don’t know about me because I could tell you the things you might already know but I think they are obvious.”

Sage smiled and put his head down on Nox’s shoulder and stared down the length of his body. Nox pressed his lips to Sage’s hair and started. “I’ve never had sex with Jace. We’ve shared lovers at the same time, kissed and touched each other, and shared the same bed for sleeping, but we’ve never had sex.”

    “Never?” Sage asked.

“Never. He wants to, wanted to, but I couldn’t risk losing him as my family, my brother, or my best friend. If I lost Jace I probably would have killed my self back then. That’s how bad off I was. So two more things you didn’t know.” Nox grinned. “I tried to kill myself twice. The first time I slit my wrists with a butter knife, but I healed to fast and it was pointless. A few months later, I jumped off the AU building, like I’d done many times before exept this time I didn’t want to use my ability to safe myself. I did in the end, only broke an arm. I was sent to suicide watch for about three months after that attempt. The first one no one knew about, though I told Margo about it when she put me on watch.”

“Damn, Nox. Do you think about it now?”

Nox shook his head. “No. But I have bad days and I do stupid things. I go to bars pick up a guy who I know will hurt me in ways I don’t like, Or take a mission I know could kill me.”

Sage asked, “When was the last time you felt that way?”

Nox smiled. “It hasn’t happened for a few years. I’ve grown a lot in those years. I accept my flaws, know when I’m close to breaking and I find an outlet that isn’t dangerous. Jace will take me dancing but he won’t let me dance with anyone but him and Mia. He’ll drag me to a movie or make me come spend the night with his family out in Brooklyn. Dorian and Kai help too, though my dad has a strange way of helping – he usually likes to kick the shit out of me on the mat. Which is good too.”

    Sage smiled, “That’s only three.”

    Nox laughed. “Yeah.”

“Okay, Four. I watched my mother die in a hospital room after a werebear bit her.”

“Five. My first crush was a guy. My first time was with a girl we both crushed on. We’d gone up to watch him at swim practice. I was jacking off to him in the privacy of an old classroom that overlooked the pool, and she walked in. Needless to say she saw and well she decided that I needed more than a hand job.”

Sage could feel heat rushing everywhere, his cock was twitching. Nox laughed softly, “You know your smell changes when you are turned on?”

    Sage paled and breathed out,”No.”

“Did your wolf pups in the pack not tell you?”

Sage shook his head, “No. What do I smell like.”

“Mostly Jasmine and lavender. When you are turned on there is an undercurrent of musk that makes me want to fuck you.”

Sage groaned. “Six, is on those lines. All Venatori have supernaural senses. Some senses better than others. For me smell is a big part of my comfort, turn ons, and my fears. I need to smell like I’m safe. Dorian smells like cinamon and vanilla and he’s the best safe zone I have until I found you. My mother smells like dirt and cigarette smoke. I hate the taste of apple pie, but the smells of making it make me feel like I’m home. Both stem from the fact that my mother made apple pie.”

Sage kissed the skin below his head and a shudder ran though the other man’s body. Sage smiled. “That counts as two. Eight?”

“Let’s see. ” Nox lifted a hand and a finger trailed down his cheek over his scar. “I got this on my first hunt. I was tasked with killing a ghost who was possessing a little girl. She got me with a silver knife before I had to kill her. The one on my arm is from a vampire bite. It’s how I learned I coud help increase the speed of supernatural healing. The one on my leg.” Nox lifted his leg and shook it to indicate which one. But his cock moved and Sage couldn’t take his eyes off of it. He was vaguely aware of the human dragon’s breathe but he was too busy watching Nox’s dick settle back now that he’d stopped moving. His breathing was rapid and Nox laughed. “Does that count as eight, nine and ten?”

    Sage hummed,”What?”

Nox laughed. “Do you want the scars to count as me finishing?”

Sage groaned at the words. “I have to go now?”

Nox nodded. “Yes. 10 things I should know about you.”

Sage sighed. “I have a brother. We were separated in foster care. I’ve never tried to find him. I’m afraid of what I’ll find.”

“I am not gay, or bi-sexual. I don’t care about gender identity. I fall for the person, doesn’t matter if he is a she, or he is a he. Or she thinks she’s a half alien.” Sage was glad Nox couldn’t see his face. He’d never really voiced that to anyone before. Not in those words anyway.

“I’ve slept with Sasha. Technically she was cheating on Bryan. But we’ve been sleeping with each other on and off since we were kids. She was my first.”

Sage paused to think. That was three. This was a lot harder than Nox made it sound.

“I’ve hacked things I’ve never told my boss about. Their security was so tough, I didn’t think too many peple would hack them. I guess I got through cause I was a technopath.”

Nox nodded, “Probably.” He smiled. “You are doing well. That’s four.”

Sage sighed. “I was called Wicked when I was younger because I would hack into my partner’s phones or computers and watch them.”

A smile spread on Nox’s mouth and he turned to listen, he couldn’t see, but Sage knew he’d piqued his interest. Nox asked, “Did you see anything interesting?”

Sage nodded. “One of the men I was dating, he liked to dress in women’s underwear. So I sent him some sexy langerie with no note and no return address. I watched him put them on and that night we both got off. I never told him about it.”

Nox whispered “That’s six. Four more.” Nox’s hand slid across his chest and he was rubbing at his nipples. “Tell me another one.”

Sage swallowed hard and nodded against Nox’s shoulder. “One of the girls was cheating on me, I hacked the computer in her bedroom and watched her fucking her boyfriend with a strap on. I never called her back, but I sent her boyfriend a strap on at his place of work.”

    Nox chuckled. “You are wicked.”

Sage smiled. This was getting easier he thought, but he wasn’t talking about himself. Nox asked though, “Did you get off to that?”

Sage nodded and said nothing as he watched Nox’s hand trailing down his stomach to the hair his cock was nestled in. His fingers were still painted and he was running a blunt nail through it at the base of his cock. Sage watched intently but Nox interrupted, “Two more love.”

Sage thought about it. “I once ran a hidden camera dark web site. All sorts of illegal peeping happened and was uploaded there. I got to watch everyone elses videos too. I think my parents turned off the internet twice because I was staying up all night watching.”

“Why don’t you now?” Nox asked his finger nails were moving up and down his shaft and Sage really couldn’t think. Nox asked again and Sage turned his head to look up at Nox. “Because I saw some pervert was using it to fuck little kids. I took all the footage and sent it to the cops. Then I erased everything in a hail of glory. I was caught shortly after that.”

Nox leaned his head up and kissed Sage hard and wet. “Watch now love.”

Sage put his head on Nox’s shoulder and looked down the length of his body. Nox was gripping his cock and stroking it slowly. Nox shifted to his side. He still strocked his cock but he stuck his fingers of his right hand in his mouth and was sucking loudly. Sage didn’t know where to look. But he didn’t have to decide as Nox’s fingers went behind him and Sage and to sit up to see what he was doing. His middle finger slid in side and Nox moaned at the intrusion. Sage thought that it had to be awkward but his hand and his fingers moved together. Sage watched as his body tensed and showed signes of holding back. He was teasing himself. Sage groaned and grabbed himself through his boxers.

Sage whispered, “God, Nox. Don’t hold back. I want to see you come all over yourself.” As if it were a command Nox shuttered and released. A shot of white cum splattered against his stomach and the Sage’s knee. Sage came seconds later. Panting and shuttering as his orgasm left him.

Sage laid down next to Nox and kissed him. “Damn Nox.”

    Nox grinned. “Sleep now love.”

Sage nodded and rolled to his side. Nox whimpered but Sage was pretty sure that he wasn’t supposed to hear that. Sage reached across the bed and found Nox’s arm and tugged at him. “Come over here. I can’t sleep over there.”

Nox didn’t hesitate, he wrapped his naked body around Sage and put his head in the crock of Sage’s shoulder. Sage fell asleep running small circles against Nox’s back. Sage was pretty sure Nox was out first though.

  • My Mentor

Today is day one of no Nano. Talk about no pressure! The daily prompt isapprentice, which leads into having an apprentice and being one.

Technically I guess I was Dae’lin’s apprentice. She was my mentor. I was her only apprentice. She took none and only took me on because Dorian pushed her. I should have AJ write that story down one day. Basically it boils down to me being a handful. My issues had started to manifest that first year in the Academy under Garrett. And culminated in my burning him on purpose. Dorian didn’t know me well then, but he knew I had the control. He’d been following my progress as my guardian. But he never contradicted Garrett’s story about it being an accident. But he moved me into Dae’lin’s care instead of leaving me with Garrett. He didn’t want to let me go.

But he talked Dae’lin into taking me because she had the discipline to help me reach my potential. All Magnus are given personal mentors to teach them to control their abilities. Usually someone of high strength and the same elements. There are very few people who can manipulate all the elements – something I could do at 5.

I think after Darwynn’s Law I’ll be taking on a few kids, maybe teaching a class. We’ll see if I’ll have my own little apprentices.

  • Darwynn’s Law

Well Darwynn’s Law is over. What a ride. I’m gonna start working back with Daily Prompt come Monday. AJ’s planning a few additional scenes to clean up some of the stuff left in this one before moving into the next story.

I’ve a request to see more about me and Sage so I’ll try to incorporate some stories in that during the end of The Last Phoenix and Darwynn’s Law and stuff following Darwynn’s Law up to the next story which AJ has some ideas for but a lot more work before we’ll start getting into that.

AJ has every intention of wrapping Darwynn’s Law up into ebook format for those of you who missed it. Or want to read it at your leisure. I’ll let you know what happens.

As always feel free to leave comments, tell me how much you love me… hey I’ll take bitching and complaining too. Talk to me, that’s all I ask.

    Darwynn’s Law (in order)

    Confession (12/31/2018)
    Only Forever (1/2/2019)
  • The Story Behind Chris’ Death

If you are following Darwynn’s Law you know Chris has perished – a victim of a therian attack. (So much better than typing were, or were creature and getting a weird look from my stupid screen.)

I promised I’d tell the story behind it. So here goes. AJ has an outline. AJ tries to follow outline. We kinda smushed it and moved things and went a different direction. AJ also has a horrible memory. But when it comes to the world it’s usually pretty good. Not this time.

But before I get to that, let me share. AJ had things randomly done. Random kids, random names, random descriptions, random personalities. She threw a few knowns in there like Chris, Nate, Dylan and Michaela. They all have background story. Threw a couple of the ruling family in for good measure and everything else was random.

AJ knew Trent was going to die. She had an avatar for him but since moved him cause she didn’t want to kill Eliot (from The Magicians). Kenny – well Kenny was going to die. Kinda had to kill Kenny – cliche but yes it was a must.

Two kids were slotted to die. AJ randomized that too. Stuck them in the same group and then randomly assigned all of them to groups, and assigned me, Trent and Dylan all to groups. She went so far as to randomly decide winners and losers and grades etc. But I don’t think we’ll be using that stuff. But it’s there if it’s needed.

So those two kids who died were supposed to be in Dylan’s group. Opps. AJ normally could have corrected that mistake but the post had already been published. AJ kinda has this rule if it’s published to the real world – it’s kinda law unless it’s ‘back story’ or just me rambling about something – like the past Dorian stuff. No one ever saw the drafts where he and I were an item thus it was changeable. So whoops – fuck up. So AJ looks who’s in group two, Trent’s group.

AJ could have rolled again, did it randomly. But AJ’s a bitch. (I love you AJ, but you are!) Given that it would cause me the most grief, AJ killed Chris. I knew AJ had to do it. I’d do it too. So, Chris wasn’t important to my story. But he is now. He’s my best friend’s nephew. Now I have to deal with Jace and his reaction to losing his nephew. I’m not looking forward to it. I can only hope that Jace forgives me.

James Green was slated to die, but he survived – the arrogant prick. In his stead John got to die. A ruling family is caused distress, maybe prompting them to take a look at things. Doubtful, but it adds to the drama of life in the AU building.

  • Sept 6, 2015 @ 4:45AM

Yesterday was a busy day, I didn’t get a chance to hit the writing.  I didn’t wake up with nightmares this morning.  My alarm actually woke me up.  Sage is still curled up in his bed sleeping.  He rolled over when my alarm went off after kissing me good morning.  I missed him.  I needed him.

So.  Yesterday we got back to HQ early in the morning.  We were able to book a flight for that afternoon and all of us were going to fly back to JFK and be back home in our own beds by 11:46PM.  It was late, but we were all okay with that.

While we waited for the vans to take us to the airport, we saw two familiar faces walking around HQ, hand in hand all kissy faced.  The boys all greeted them with fondness.  But I saw the surprised looks on their faces before they hid them behind the feigned happiness.  They had left the boys to die.  It made me wonder if Dylan’s son was really in trouble, or if he was feigning that too.

Thankfully I got that answer.  Dylan came over to me and offered me his hand which I ignored.  He frowned at me, “I thought we were past that.”

I smiled at him, “We were until you left 13 boys to die in the woods.”

He paled a little.  “I had my orders.”

“Yeah?  Be glad I don’t have a gun handy or I’d shoot you in the head right now.”

“Whatever.  I came over here to thank you about Sam.  Dr. Silverman accepted him as a patient and Lisa says he’s doing better.  Still has nightmares and bleeds every night, but he’s talking to her about it now.  Lisa is afraid.  I don’t think I’ll be coming out in the woods until we solve this.”

I nodded.  I didn’t want to tell Dylan I would help him.  Because I wasn’t helping the bastard at all.  I was helping his son, a six year old boy who Garret was fucking over.  Dylan could rot in hell for all I cared.  I wished he could live through just one night of what Sam endured.  My goal was to check in with all those kids who I’d seen.  And I hoped to find that boy who we can’t seem to locate.  Dorian and Sage were locking but I hadn’t gotten any updates since before all this happened.  Maybe it’ll all work out.

I shared a row with Matt and Faelen.  Faelen got the window seat – he was in heaven.  I was glad for his enthusiasm but I was still freaking the fuck out. Darwynn sat across the aisle from me.  I think he wanted to see me freaking out.  I thought I heard him chuckling from behind his magazine, but I ignored it.  Wait till he saw me in an elevator without Sage.

When we landed, the boys were all taken to the Academy.  Matt took Faelen with him – said he could bunk with him until we got things situated.  I definitely didn’t have room for the wolf in my apartment.  Sage, my love, my light, met me at the airport.  He was waiting with my bag on his shoulder when I made it down to claim it.  His blue eyes sparkled and I had to keep my feelings in check when he wrapped his arms around me.

He drove me to his house. We barely said a word.  His hand strayed to my leg or arm most of the ride.  Comforting me the only way he could.  He said that Drake was with my dad for the night.  He said, “I promised Drake you’d let him have cake for breakfast tomorrow.  It was the only way he’d stay with your dad.”

I laughed, and then I felt the bubble break.  I didn’t break down and cry, but I felt the world crash in on me long before Sage was helping me out of the car outside his house.  He carried my things inside and took them upstairs to his room.  He was grinning like a fool.  My things were finally almost completely in his house now.

I didn’t take off my clothes as I plopped down on his bed.  Sage touched my face and smiled down at me.  “You okay?”

I shook my head.  “No love, I’m not.  I need you.”

He smiled brightly at me, “I’m not going anywhere.”

I fell back on the bed and pulled Sage by his shirt with me.  His body pressed mine into the mattress and I kissed his neck then whispered into his ear, “You misunderstand.  I need you, love.  I need you inside me.  I need you.”

Sage’s body shuddered on top of me, “I thought you’d never ask.”

It wasn’t the most perfect night, I broke down completely after releasing all that built up tension.  But I had no desire to leave afterwards.  Hell I curled up next to him, naked and we slept, I dreamt of him and for the first time in a while, the nightmares didn’t scare me when they woke me.  Sure my heart was beating, my body was sore from the beatings, but I was still in Sage’s bed.  He loved me.  I loved him, and together we could accomplish anything.  And I had a feeling that life was going to get even crazier now that I was on a mission to right the wrongs of the world.  Not because I was special but because those boys I saved were.  All of them are – everywhere.

We are almost to HQ in Boulder.  Another 1 hour hike, but the boys all wanted to camp out one more night.  I think they were hoping that Dylan and Michaela would catch up with them.  I think they felt abandoned by them.  Left to die.  I didn’t have the heart to tell them that they were.  That the Venatori knew about this.  They may not have been hand picked, but they had been sent here by the Academy to die.  I had every intention of finding out why we thought it was a good idea to sacrifice a bunch of boys to the fucking therians.  And why those therians weren’t dead before now.

I was grateful that Michael and Dylan had killed those who attacked the boys.  But it devastated me that they killed their families first.  What kind of people do that?  They were innocent.  Their only flaw was that they were bitten or born into a world where they shifted at the full moon into a predeator.  It’s a harsh reality.  The Venatori need to change.  I probably can’t do much about it, but I have to try.  Killing our own to satisfy another race blood lust, just so they don’t kill more.  And even the Therians were sacrificing their own for the stupid tradition.

It makes me sick.  And …. I don’t know and nothing.  This has to stop.

I still haven’t called Sage.  I’m afraid of collapsing into a pile of goo the moment I hear his voice.  He’s my safe place, my home.  He’s my rock.  But right now, I need to be that rock.  I can’t allow myself to implode.

The boys are all hanging out together.  At least while the fire is burning bright, here is plenty of food.  Jerry rigged up some music, and they are dancing around like the boys in Lord of the Flies… that is the movie right?

Even Faelen and Matt are out there, though Faelen is still attached pretty much at the hip to Matt.  But I don’t think Matt minds.  He likes taking care of people that’s one thing for certain.

Darwynn is watching outside the ring of firelight.  He keeps looking at me like he’s trying to figure me out.  I smiled at him and he came to sit next to me.  We sat for a while just watching the boys.  “You think you can make a difference?” He said breaking the silence.

I shrugged.  “No.  Tradition and all that.  But I can’t sit by and let 15 more boys die someplace else because of tradition.  Chris should be going home to see his family, work on the farm and grow the biggest damned pumpkin he can.  Instead I’m carrying him home in a plastic bag so his family can bury him properly.”

Darwynn nodded, “I’ll come.  I don’t know how much help I’ll be.  But I’ll come.  If anything I’ll be at your side when shit hits the fan.”

We sat in silence for a while longer, “Faelen likes you.  He likes Matt.  He has no family.  He had none to begin with.  He was turned a few years back.  He hasn’t shifted yet.  He needs a pack.”

I smiled.  “He’ll have one.  It’s small, but he’ll belong.  He’ll be loved and looked after.  We may not be be shifters but he has a pack.  And have the resources to make sure he grows up to be a productive member of wolf society.  Maybe not human, but I hope Sage can handle that.”

Darwynn laughed, “I’ve never been to New York City.  I’ve never flown on a commercial plane either.”

I smiled.  “Well don’t sit next to me.”  He looked at me curiously.  I grinned.  “I’m afraid of flying.”

“Big bad hunter, afraid of flying?”

I laughed.  “You’ll find I’m afraid of a lot of things.”

Darwynn and I chatted until the boys all collapsed from exhaustion around the fire.  Tomorrow we are back in civilization and get to put this all behind us.  Tomorrow is a new day – the Venatori have a lot to answer for.  And I am not exactly how far I am willing to go to make them see the error of their ways.

Darwyn came back with his buck, the boys helped him cook it and we ate well outside the ruined village. I buried as many of the bodies I could. Matt and Faelen helped me. Respecting the dead of our fallen foes. All of the boys filtered off into their little cliques. The teams didn’t stick together, it was their friends and nothing but their friends. Even my group of boys who had worked together were all sitting alone. Life went on, and they were waiting on me to take them back.

Now that we have everything buttoned up here. No forest fires, no corpses to be scavenged and stumbled upon by humans, we headed for Boulder.

    Only Forever (1/2/2019)

Shortly after my little speech we heard an explosion in the direction we were heading. Everyone ran in that direction.  We were still an hour out by the time we saw the billowing smoke it was too late.

I could smell the stench of burning flesh and hair.  The fire burned hot and it smelled like petroleum and other man made things.  There were no survivors.  Well I say that, but it’s a lie.  I found a woman who’s body was burnining she was still alive, her therian blood kept her alive longer, her lungs hadn’t burnt with the smoke.  But the burn marks on her body I knew.  Dragon’s fire.  Or napalm – man made dragon’s fire.  The stuff burns until there is nothing left to burn.  She wailed for me to help her.  I tried.  But It was too much to heal.  She begged and pleaded.  I told her I was sorry.  She whispered, “Kill me.”  she whispered it over and over until I was certain that was what she said.

I had my gun out, Faelen was behind me.  He yelled when I pulled the trigger.  He scooped the dead woman up in his arms and glared at me heedless of the napalm he had on his skin.  He screamed even as I put the fire out with my power.  His arm and chest would scar, but he’d live.  I picked him up and carried him as I put out the fires all around us.

Faelen had passed out in my arms.  I almost dropped the boy several times while I walked but he clung to me even as I stumbled to my knees.

There were no survivors.  And I didn’t see anything that was recognizeable as Dylan or Michaela, only women and children – burnt and dead.  there were no men in this villiage, they were out hunting us. And Michaela and Dylan killed their families….

At the edge of their little village I collapsed.  Matt said I passed out completely.  I woke up a few minutes ago.  My boys all around the fire sleeping.  Darwynn dressed and standing by the fire watching over us.  He spoke quietly when he saw me watching him.  “The rest are dead, the boy and I the only survivors.  There was no way we could survive against what they threw at us.”

I sat up and put my head on my knees and closed my eyes.  It was hard to move, hard to breathe.  I asked when the nausea was swept away when Matt laid his hand on my leg, still asleep he knew I was in need.  “Are you going to retaliate?”

Darwyn knelt down in front of me, creating a dark silhouette in front of me against the bright fire.  “To what end.   So you can kill me?”

I sighed.  “Come back with me, help me fix this?”

Darwynn laughed as he stood up, “What’s a boy like you going to do?”

I looked up at him with a smile.  “Come with me and find out.”

Darwynn nodded once as he pulled his shirt off.  “I’ll think about it.  I’m hungry.  I smelled a buck pass by not long ago.”  He shifted and was off at a run now that I was awake.

Michaela and Dylan were still missing, but right now I didn’t care.  They could die for all I cared at the moment.  The boys were safe, and that was all I cared about.

We were all a little strung out.  All a lot tired.  Faelen was quiet, but he clung to Matt’s hand  while I lingered with each of the boys checking on each of them.  We hadn’t been far from our original camp.  It was destroyed now though.  Much like the first one we’d come to earlier in the trip.  There wasn’t anything left, and what was there was burning.  We took a break while I put out all the fires.

When I sat down completely exhausted Matt asked, “You okay?”

“I’ll be fine.”  I said to him.  He gave me that smile that said I know you are lying but I’ll let you maintain your dignity and not push.  He was a great kid.

Faelen on the other hand spoke in a hushed whisper, “You look like shit.”

I grinned at him.  “I’m just tired.  I’ll be fine.”  And it wasn’t really a lie.  I was tired (or knackered).  I was draining my power and all my reserve power was linked far away in New York.  Matt put his hand on mine as it rested on the log between us.  And the world just clicked into place again.  The fog of sleepless nights, the drain of power left.  I stared at him and saw the tiredness in his eyes and I yanked my hand from under his.  “I love that you want to help me.  But you need to stay strong, no one else is standing here taking the lead if something happens to me.”

Matt grinned.  “And none of us will be standing here to lead if you fall.  Let me take some of it from you, Nox.  We’ll do better together, than separate.  My mom always said she wished she could take me with her, to ground her when she needed it in the heat of the moment.”

I grinned.  “You’d be dead too then.”

Matt nodded sadly. “I know.  My dad blames me for it.  Said I could have saved her but I was a boy, she was protecting me.”

“Like a parent should.”  I said.

Matt smiled.  “My dad is a good man.  Like your father.  Tradition engrains them.  He says I have to follow mother in her footsteps.  It’s why I’m here.”

“No Matt, you aren’t going to be a hunter.  Not if I have any say in it.  Not because I don’t think you can, cause you can.  But you make better all around support.  Your gift, you can help others recover quickly.  You could work your magic on unsuspecting customers and they’d never know that as you relaxed them with a massage that you were healing their magics.”

“You think I should be a masseuse?”

I grinned.  “No, it was an example.  You are a service, not a fighter.  Use that head of yours, don’t hunt.  Half you boys need to find something else to do.  You aren’t hunters.  Patrick should be going to MIT with Jerry to study engineering.  I want to see the two of you build a building that rivals the AU building or the Night Life in terms of supernatural tech.  Vampires who can walk in daylight has nothing on what the two of you can accomplish.”

Patrick laughed, “My dad won’t let me do that.”

    “He will.  Trust me.”

Jerry asked, “Are you going to threaten our parents to make them do what you want?”

I shook my head.  “Nope.  I probably won’t even talk to them.  I have the ear of the most powerful man you’ll ever need in the Academy.  The one who tells your parents, what you need to be doing.”

Nate laughed, “You are going to tell Dorian and he’s going to retest isn’t he?”

“Probably.  Look, our world isn’t black and white, you don’t just become hunter or scrin with your head in the books.  Be productive to our society – to the world.  I’m a hunter, because I had no choice.  I probably wouldn’t be much good at anything else because I have to work my ass off to understand half my schooling.  None of you short of maybe Brock is made for this.  And honestly I hope Brock gets that NFL ride he wants.  But go to college, get that degree too.  Football only gets you so far.”

I’m not sure how my feeling like shit turned into a speech about life and standards, but the boys all seemed a little bit better than they had been.  Except Matt, he’d taken my fatigue into him and he looked tired.  I smiled at him.  “Give it to the earth.” I whispered to him.

He looked at me quizzically.  “You can see what I do right?”

He nodded.  I put my hands into the dirt below us and I closed my eyes and summoned up the elements but I didn’t use them.  I surrendered to them.  It’s how you heal.  I surrender for them, and it heals the wounds.  But it works in reverse.  I didn’t know how to tell that to Matt so I just showed him.

He said.  “I can’t manipulate the elements.”

“I know.  I’m not doing anything.  Just open up to it, relax.  Life wants to survive.  It needs to.”

I watched Matt do it skeptically.  But he gasped when the elements swirled around him with a life of it’s own and took the fatigue away, healed the little wounds that had lingered from the hike.  He hissed, “Wow.”

    I smiled, “Together then?”

He stood up and smiled back.  “Together.”

He called to the rest of the group and took Faelen’s hand and headed into the direction of camp.  We still hadn’t found Dylan and Mick and their lives hung in the balance.

  • Bombs – Walker’s Story

We made it to Dae’lin’s office and I knocked politely on the door, but there was no answer. I peeked in the side window and saw she wasn’t there. “No Dae’lin.”

Walker started looking and pointed, “She’s in the fish bowl with your dragon lady.”

“This should be fun.” I said.

Walker and I went into the glass walled conference room. Dae’lin didn’t turn to look at us but Naomi’s orange eyes looked up and she gave me a half smile before turning her attentions back on Dae’lin.

The raven haired Venatori was short in stature but she didn’t become head of the field hunters by being soft and small. Her personality made up for her height. “Sit down gentleman.”

Walker did as she asked and took a seat next to her. I didn’t I walked around the table examining what was really going on in her. The dragon had been hurt, possibly tortured. Dae’lin was holding her in loose bonds of air. I frowned, “Let her go. She’s not going anywhere.”

Dae’lin turned her brown eyes up at me and stared at my defiance. “Let her go.” I demanded.

Dae’lin shook her head. “It’s safer this way.”

“Let her go. Dae’lin.” I was probably over stepping my bounds and Dae’lin thought so too as she stood up and stepped into me.

I smiled down at her. She had scared me once upon a time. Now she was only my boss, she couldn’t do much more than write me up. Firing me meant I went down a level and possibly couldn’t hunt. That would be a bad thing, but really how do you fire a man when there are only so many hunters in the organization.

I sat down ignoring Dae’lin’s display of authority. “Let her go. It’s the last time I ask.”

Dae’lin’s voice was quiet and red hot with anger. “You never asked.”

I turned to Naomi and wove a razor sharp line of air and snaked it between the dragon and her bonds. I pulled and the weaves Dae’lin were holding sliced in half leaving a vacuum and there was a small pop as the weave broke completely. “I said let her go.”

Dae’lin stared at me in raw fury. “She will attack.”

“She will not attack. She had not attacked any of you who were not provoking her. I can go look at the tapes Dae’lin. I guarantee you she was on her best behavior until someone taunted her. I don’t even have to be here to know it’s true.”

Walker looked a little guilty and I frowned. “She’s a person just like you are. Treat them as such and they won’t fight you so bad. She knows she’s dead. At least let her die with some dignity.”

I turned back to Naomi, “Your son slept well last night. He enjoyed the cake my friend brought me. I hope he won’t be disappointed when cake isn’t for dinner every night.”

She smiled at me and I continued, “What is Dae’lin asking you about?”

Naomi slid the paper across the table. I recognized the handwriting and the times and dates and the bits of information were familiar even though I hadn’t read it all. I knew they were asking about the Dragon’s plans.

“I see your name and number here. Valentino contacted you we know this. Do you recognize any of the other numbers?”

She shook her head. “No, but they already have the names the phones belong to. I don’t know any of them.”

“So why are we in here?” I asked.

“Because they don’t believe me. All dragons must know all other dragons.”

I laughed. “Most Venatori know most venatori. But dragons are solitary creatures – rarely taking mates out of fear for their hoards. I believe you.”

“What’s the problem here Dae’lin?” I turned to look at the woman who was glaring daggers at me.

“She can’t know nothing about them.”

“Why not? Do you know anything about Glen Hill?” I asked.

“I know he’s the father of your best-friend.”

“Do you know Robert Hill?” I asked.

Dae’lin looked at me like I was asking her a trick question. “Robert Hill is my best friend’s great-grandfather. I met him once when I was six. He passed away the year after that. Did you know that?”

Dae’lin frowned. “No. I did not.”

“Do you know every human in New York City? Do you even know one human in New York City who doesn’t work in this building?”

Dae’lin shook her head. “So it’s possible she doesn’t know these people. Drop it Dae’lin. Put her back in her cell and let her wait her trial and pay for her crimes in peace.”

I stood up and took the piece of paper with me. Walker followed me out. I turned to see Dae’lin stalking out of the fish bowl and shutting the door behind me. She grabbed me by the arm and attempted to drag me to her office like the child I had once been. Old habits died hard, but I wasn’t going to put up with it. I dug my heels in and she turned around with a huff. “If you want to do it here. Fine with me.” She didn’t stand on her tip toes but her she puffed out her chest and made her stance known. “You will never do that again. Are we clear?”

“I will never do what again?” I asked. I had done a few things she would be pissed at. I wanted clarification on it.

“All of it. Nox. You may not be a boy anymore but if you ever countermand me in front of anyone ever again I will hang you out to dry.”

“So you want me to let you treat people with disrespect and hatred because you think you are better than them?” I asked. “You want me to go pull up the footage outside the conference room? From the look on Walker’s face a moment ago he and a few others were taunting our dragon friend. It’s no fucking wonder they hate us. We think we are better than them. We preach harmony but we don’t practice it. You tie her up in bonds of air because you fucking can. Did she attack you Dae’lin, or just some dumb fuck who was treating her like a dog they think she is?”

“You will not talk back to me.” Her anger rose up and I could see fire brimming around her just waiting to pop.

“I am not five any longer Dae’lin. I will not be treated like a child. I’d rather be demoted than be treated like you treat me. I’m no longer your student. You cannot manhandle me.”

Tiny ribbons of translucent fire threaded itself around Dae’lin and I frowned. She was losing control. She only ever lost control around me, that was how often I made her angry. “I wouldn’t have to manhandle you if you obeyed me.”

“If you had asked me to come to your office or even ordered it I might have followed you. Instead you choose to grab me by the arm like some stubborn child. You treat me like a child you will get childish reactions from me, you damn well know this.”

The fire grew larger but only those who could see the patterns even knew the impending danger of the anger seething from the leader of the field hunters – which meant I was the only one who noticed. Her anger grew and the heat from the threads was making her sweat – small beads trickled down her forehead and she absently wiped it away. Walker had started fanning himself several feet away from where we stood. I could have said something. I probably should have, but I knew telling her to calm down would only make it worse. So I let it build up to dangerous levels. Instead I spoke calmly and with a cool voice, “I am asking you for a reassignment – officially. Give me and my problem self to some other low level administrator and let me be their problem.”

Dae’lin stared up at me like I was asking for something completely strange and extraordinary – people transferred all the time. “Why would you ask that?”

I sighed, “Because apparently you and I don’t work well together.” I gestured to the air around her and she looked around noticing for the first time the flames that were threaded around her. In that moment of realization Dae’lin regained her control and stared at me open mouthed. “I won’t give you to someone else. They will try to make you be someone you aren’t.”

“I’d like to see them try, Dae’lin.” I said defiantly.

“Nox. Don’t ask that of me.”

I frowned. “Then stop treating me like I’m still your student. I’m equal to everyone here. And you tried to drag me off like some petulant child. I don’t have a problem with you yelling at me in public. But I will not let you treat me like I’m five.”

Dae’lin turned around and headed to her office. “My office. Now!”

I sighed but I followed her to her office. Walker followed in my wake but he hung back. He didn’t want to get yelled at. I smiled at him as I closed the door to Dae’lin’s office. She was already sitting behind her desk staring at her computer screen. I stood by the door waiting her instructions.

“I’m sorry, Nox. I have no excuse for my behavior. You make me so angry.” The anger was still present, but so was the remorse and the sorrow for times long since gone.

“I won’t apologize for what I did in there Dae’lin. You didn’t need to keep her tied up. You know what they do to those I bring back. What did you expect her to do when people taunt her and kick her like a dog?”

“I know. And I know you feel every ounce of pain they feel while they are here. I am always surprised empathy was not one of your tested abilities.”

“It doesn’t take a magical ability to feel for others, Dae’lin. I know what it’s like to be treated like shit. To be on the receiving end of the bullies here in the Venatori. They have rights. The Clandestine Providence doesn’t say we are better than they are. We are the police. We have to obey the laws too.”

Dae’lin sighed. “That is why you can’t be under someone else. You’d be slapped a desk job every time you spouted your views until you rode that desk permanently. Every kill you failed on would be a mark against you. I know it seems that way now, but they listen now. They’ve actually let a few go with probation. I was surprised when Il Cane took a fledgling in personally.”

I smiled. “Il Cane didn’t take him in. Ant did. He killed Casey’s master for making children vampires. Ant felt responsible for the death of that middle school teacher and his family at Casey’s hand. Casey is a good barista at the Starbucks in the Night Life building. Armand says he might even promote him to night shift assistant manager.”

“Nox. Teach Walker well. He’s a good hunter. He’s not like you, but he could be.” Dae’lin looked up at me and frowned.

“Why did you pair me with him Dae’lin?” I asked.

Dae’lin picked up her phone and sent a text before she answered me. “Walker was in Nebraska. He was hunting a rogue wolf. The wolf turned out to be a 15 year old girl who was bitten by what authorities called a rabid dog. No one suspected she’d turn. The wolf in question skipped town months before she turned. She ravaged her birthday party guests killing one and infecting three others.” Dae’lin sighed, “He killed her without hesitation. A bullet in the chest. It was a clean kill if she’d been human, but she wasn’t. He watched the girl suffer. She’d been in wolf form and when she shifted back to a girl Walker lost it. His handler said he almost put a gun to his head. He needs to see there is more than one way to do this. Tell me what you would have done with this girl?”

Halfway through the story I heard the door behind me open and I could smell Walker’s cologne before he shut the door behind him. Dae’lin had continued uninterrupted, and as she finished the story I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. I knew how Walker felt. Hell, I’d been there myself on my first hunt. “Did she attack him?”

Dae’lin shook her head. “No, they had trapped her, she was cowering in a corner when he shot her.”

“I’d have calmed her down. Talked to her humanity and brought her out of it. At the very least I would have kept her there until she shifted back. I’d have given her to the local pack, told the alpha the story and seen that she got the help she needed. I’d have given him the three names of the infected as well. He’d be in charge of them too. She’ll always remember that first kill, but she didn’t have to do it again.”

Dae’lin asked, “Would you have done it with Michaela there egging you on?”

“You are asking me if I would have killed her because Michaela was ordering it?” I asked.

    Dae’lin nodded.

I said. “I don’t know. Michaela never made me do anything I didn’t want to do. She said if I failed, it was on me, not her.”

Dae’lin acknowledged the man behind her, “Walker do you want to ask anything?”

“No ma’am.” He stepped into my peripheral vision and was looking down at the ground. I put my hand on his shoulder and squeezed then it my hand fall back to my side.

I looked at Dae’lin, “Do you have anything else? Walker and I have some work to do.”

Dae’lin shook her head. “No. Let me know what you find out.”

I turned and opened the door and headed towards the elevator. I hoped Walker followed and he did. I didn’t hear the door shut behind us. I pressed the elevator button to go down and we waited in silence. If Walker wanted to talk I’d listen, if he didn’t I was good with that too. But it was his mission. His problems. I wasn’t going to push. I knew from personal experience that was the best way to make someone shut up about it.

The elevator doors slide open and everyone disembarked. We got on and I pressed the button for the ground floor. Walker asked, “Where we going?”

“Address #1 on the list. I know it.”

The first few floors we rode in silence. Walker broke it with a whispered question, “You aren’t going to even ask about it?”

I shrugged. “If you want to talk about it, talk. If you don’t that’s okay to. I’ll listen either way when you are ready.”

“I didn’t know she was 15 when I shot her. Hell I didn’t even know she was a she until she shifted.” Walker confided.

I didn’t mention the fact that wolves usually have visible genitals, that wouldn’t really help matters, but the age thing was completely not his fault. “No one could have known she was only 15 from looking at her.” I reassured Walker. “Shit happens. From what I get from the story and the questions Dae’lin asked, your handler was pushing you to shoot first and ask questions later. It’s not your fault.”

Walker shook his head. “It was. I pulled the trigger. Would she have had a good life? Could she have had?” Walker sound generally concerned over the idea that he hadn’t done the right thing.

“She could have. Most victims who survive the change, which she obviously did lead full and normal lives except for three days out of every month. It’s rough at first, sometimes they have to cage the fledglings, but most of the time an alpha can control them so they don’t attack humans.”

Walker sighed as the door to the lobby opened and we stepped out. He was lost in thought as we headed into the afternoon air. It was bright and I wished I’d had my sunglasses with me.

    The Last Phoenix (in order)

  • Sept 3, 2015 @ 12:55PM

All the boys slept late except for Matt and Faelen.  They helped me get food ready for the rest of them.  Faelen kept staring at me from lowered eyes.  Everytime I’d catch him he’d lower his eyes and Matt would laugh.

Matt sat down next to the wolf and whispered to him.  But he knew I could hear.  “Just ask him what’s on your mind.  He doesn’t bite.  At least not unless you ask him.”

I tried not to laugh at the overheard comment as I boiled water for coffee.  I needed coffee.  I needed coffee bad.

The blue eyed wolf asked shyly, “What are you?”

I didn’t have a different answer than before.  “I’m half Venatori, half human.  I’m Cesari, a Magnus that can bend all four elements.”

He shook his head, “You smell like a wolf.”

I smiled.  “I’ve been told that before.  I’m part of a pack at home.  I guess that’s what you smell.”

“You smell like something else too. Something dangerous.”

Matt laughed.  “He smells like fire.”

Faelen nodded. “That’s it.”  He looked to Matt,”What is he?”

Matt shrugged, “He’s Nox. He doesn’t need another explanation.”

    I laughed.  “I like that.”

Matt grinned, “I thought you might.”

Darwynn was sitting at the edge of camp watching everything.  The boys all woke up slowly at the smell of coffee.  And I had to make two more pots before we were all done with breakfast.

I sat down with them all around me. “Dylan was supposed to find us.  My priority is you guys.  My gut says we leave back to Boulder now.  But leaving Dylan and Michaela out here by themselves leaves a bad taste in my mouth.  So I’m leaving it up to a vote.  We aren’t going after the therians.  We’ll send up hunters, but I doubt HQ will send anyone until next year.”

When I called for a find Dylan and Michaela they all raised their hands except Faelen and Darwynn. So I nodded, “You need to follow my instructions.  This is not a democracy.  I know some of you don’t like me, but I do this for a living.  Mick and Dylan don’t have trackers, they could be anywhere.  But I think they went to the therian camp to do something stupid.”

Darwynn moved closer to the group with a towel wrapped around his body.  “I’ll scout ahead, see if I can find their trail.”

I nodded. “Alright.”  He took that as a dismissal and he shifted in front of the boys.  Every single one of them jumped and then stared at the mountain lion looking back at them with brown eyes.  I dropped the wall and put ot the ring of fire and Darwynn growled which made the boys jump again as he took off in the direction of their camp.

I looked to Faelen, “Can you find your way home from here?”

He nodded.  “Yes.  But I don’t want to go.”

Matt wrapped his arm around the other boy and smiled, “We won’t let anything happen to you.”

We all heard a few of the boys grump under their breathes, “I ain’t helping that fleabag.”

But I nodded and reassured Faelen.  “You are under my protection.  No one will hurt you. Not here not ever.”

And so we packed up and started following Faelen through the woods.  Matt walked beside him, and I flaked him on the other side.  Off to find the wizard  the wonderful wizard of oz…. Sage you are so on my mind.
