Daevas & Marionettes

I started a lengthy talk on the races in my world and what they are capable of. This post is a second in that series. I don’t know how many we’ll get into before the post gets too long winded, but we’ll start and keep going.

The original races are Humans, Dragons, Primeval Vampires and the Aeternus. In addition to the four corporeal races there is an otherworldly type race called Daevas.

A Daeva can only inhabit our world through human possession. There are three types of Daeva – Angel, Demon and Ghost. These possessed humans are called Marionettes and can possess special powers.

The three subspecies of Daeva are essentially the same thing, it’s only their alignments that differ. An angel is essentially good. They typically only inhabit a willing human to do their work, and then are gone when the task is complete. Angels rarely cause trouble, but there have been fallen angels who do reek havoc on the earth.

Demons on the other hand do not seek permission and they generally will use a body up until the vessel can no longer function. Demons are essentially evil.

Ghosts are an entirely different entity. A ghost was once human, they have died and have unfinished business. Typically ghosts are pretty innocuous – but when a human is killed in a heinous way they tend to come back bent on revenge. And once the ghost gets a taste for death it will dish it out until it is stopped.

The only way to kill a Daeva is to kill its host. Which means an innocent human dies. You can banish or exorcise a daeva, but it does not stop it from finding a new host. There may be a way to stop a daeva but the Venatori have yet to find a way to do so without killing the host body. One of my many goals…
