The weather is still cold, but it’s slowly getting warmer with Spring well on its way. The day light hours are as long as those of the night, but the nights are getting shorter. In the Wellsorrow Region, the Shadowfell despair is fading in its cycle. The people of Ashbourne and surrounding areas are feeling happier and it’s easier to shake the despair, and harder to fall under its influence. There is a half moon in the night sky tonight.

al’Zand was being a prick. Well not really. Just wasn’t playing along. But Rosana was easy t o manipulate — easy to toy with so she did. That was her thing after all. al’Zand was too occupied with the boy.

As a matter of fact they all seemed a bit preoccupied with him. What the fuck?

As Miranda was about to get up her head flopped to the bed and she watched a portal wink out as the little shit creature curled up on the pillow next to the boy.

Miranda clambered out of the bed and stomped over to the boy. “You keep your fucking little pet in line.”

Everyone stared up at her with wide eyes. All but the disrobing knight in shining armor he laughed and put his hand on her shoulder. “I’d revise your plan of action. The worst thing you can do is react to a boggle’s antics. It’s like telling a toddler no — they only want to do it more.” He leaned in, “And really threatening the boy is only petty. He’s pretty than you are,” whispered into her ear.

Miranda growled and stomped over to the farthest bed, threw back the covers and climbed into bed. “I’m going to bed — alone.” Miranda rolled over with her back to the others and wiped away the silent tears.

Miranda wouldn’t take no for an answer. She ushered us all up the stairs and into their very spacious room. I didn’t have time to protest and when I opened my mouth Miranda just smiled and pressed a finger to my lips., leaned in and whispered, “We all want something here.”

What did she know? Of course Rosana had told her her plan, but what did she know of the other’s motives. al’Zand was her husband, obviously a lie from his glare and reaction. And his completely attention and obvious attraction to the boy who spoke to boggles and gained their help.

The knight looking fellow didn’t seem like he was all that interested, but he too listened intently to the boy’s words. What did he want with ae’Nyx? Was someone else after the elixir?

The room was spacious, and there were two large beds. When had Miranda procured such a thing?

“How exactly is this going to work, Miranda? I waving my hand over the contents of the room and the five of us. She had some diabolical plan, I wanted to know what it was.

al’Zand dropped his things on one of the beds and glared at Miranda. “Girls in one, boys in another.”

I scoffed. “That is a no. You and your wife in one. I don’t care where they sleep but this bed is mine.”

Both ae’Nyx and Rain unfurled their sleeping bags. The difference between the two elves was ae’Nyx choose a corner and al’Zand watched with helpless and restless hands as his newly acquired interest had already been settling in. The blue eyed man crouched down and whispered with his friend.

Rain on the other hand laid out in the middle of the room and started stripping his armor. There was no where left to look. When I swept my eyes over the empty bed I had claimed Miranda lay sprawled out upon in watching me. What was her game?

The red head was wary of her advances and Miranda understood. New city — new dangers. But this woman looked like she could handle herself. And after she offered to help, the woman looked at Miranda with even more caution. A devastating smile swept across Miranda’s lips and she winked with a seductive lick of her lips.

The woman’s gaze dropped, and Miranda offered the other woman her hand. “I’m Miranda. I’ll do anything to help a friend and fellow companion in need.” Miranda smiled again. “Anything.”

The woman shook her head with a bit of an ‘I-cannot-believe-this-is-happening’ look on her face. “Rosana,” she said with a smile. “I don’t suppose having an extra set of eyes on the job would hurt. But we can’t hurt the boy. The repercussions on damage from my boss’s boss would be insurmountable — deadly even.”

A man at a nearby table threw his drink across the table and stood up, shouting. Nothing like throwing a temper-tantrum when your day doesn’t go well at dice. al’Zand was comparable to such a joke. But she had other things to deal with and let the men do whatever it is they would do as long as they stayed over there and away from them.

“Nothing like facing death together.” Miranda joked.

The Raven Queen didn’t care about one’s misdeeds as most other gods and goddesses, but she cared about how you felt about it yourself. Never take shame in your actions. Stand proud and follow in your path no matter where it guides you. And today Alushtas’ path lie in front of a thief carrying things that did not belong to him.

A quick twist of his belt and a fling of his arm and the net unfurled around the fleeing thief’s feet and he crashed and tumbled into the nearby refuse pile. With a smile, Alushtas grabbed the ruffian by the scruff of his neck and stood him up with ease.

“Be a gentleman and remove your clothes,” he said. “All of them. I want nothing but skin streaking through the streets when you are seen next.” No one ever said payback had to end in death — humiliation was far better a teacher. And the magistrate would throw him in the stocks for this little theft instead of the man losing a hand. He didn’t get away.

The man refused the instruction and Alushtas did the only thing possible. He drew his sword and smiled. “Clothes, or the pointy end of my blade.”

The man hurried through the disrobing process and took off at high speed until he stubbed his toe on a cobblestone and he changed his tactics to a prompt walk through the dim light, back the way he’d come.

Alushtas gathered the things the man had dropped, including his ruffian clothing, and started down the way the man came. To look for the owner and the boy he’d come in search of. The events had returned Alushtas to his mission as a reminder never to stray too long.

Two men gathered in the shadows. Maybe they were the assailant’s marks? Or maybe they were more thieves preying on the weak. Did Alushtas want to be their questioner or just ignore them all together.

al’Zand hadn’t returned and Miranda was parched. She took a break, much to the house’s regret. The crowd spit and spewed words she dared not repeat — not from a lady. She scoffed in her mind.

The red head sat down at a nearby table and Miranda joined her. “Mind if I join you. We women have to stick together.”

The red head looked around at all the leering men then gave her a nod. “They don’t bother me.”

Miranda chuckled and leaned in. “To be honest, they don’t bother me either. But they don’t need to know that.” She sat down and the slim little waitress brought her another bowl of left over gruel and a dark ale. Perfect! Miranda patted the girl on her ass with a quick smile and before the girl turned around, another grouch of a man made a rude gesture and she was off to tend to his needs.

“What’s a pretty thing like you do in here all alone?” Miranda asked. “Obviously not here for the men. Better places in better districts than this lowly sea district, I’m sure.” Miranda winked. “And the women are scarce.”

The city was fabulous. I hadn’t found who I was looking for. But then I hadn’t even bothered to stop and ask either. The sun sank in the sky. The moon rose and the feeling of home settled upon the land. It was comforting in the grays and the despair from the Leech, while only a fraction of what was home, made Ashbourne all that more familiar.

I lost the awe as the light faded and Alushtas made for his mark. The draw was keener now that his mistress had a tighter grip on the world. The boy beckoned and I would find him.

I wandered the city as before but with a purpose following my eyes and ears. The scent of despair that one of our lineage could only have. And in the darkness a man carrying to packs ran towards Alushtas. Whatever should I do? The possibilities were endless from letting him go to becoming a casualty of a quick armored boot to the chest.
