The Kitchen Show

I’d found a dealer in archaic magics. He had the ingredients we needed. Oddly enough it was a man Dean knew. Not exactly sure how or if the man would recognize him, but he and Cass went with the password to get the ingredients. Magnus decided to prepare the concoction with what we had in Nox’s kitchen.

He and Alec were busy upstairs and I stayed down stairs. I wasn’t sure how Nox would feel about his kitchen being used for magic. Because it was his kitchen even though I owned the house. I had never really used my kitchen before him. Now it was one of my favorite places in the house. The island bar stools were comfortably worn now as that’s where we always ate. The fire in the brick oven I had to have was always on, when I lived alone I only lit it once. Nox loved it. He used it for so many things. But Nox loved fire to begin with and cooking on it was one of his little pleasure.

If it weren’t for the kitchen I sometimes thought he’d leave me. Go stay with Dev. But Dev’s place was too crowded and that kept Nox here too. I was jealous. Dev could read his thoughts. Dev got him when no one else did. Dev was always on his side, even against me and Dee. I hated it. I was the reason they were together, I hated that I was jealous, but for as many insecurity as Nox had, and they were many, I had my own issues.

One that I was indulging in while Magnus and Alec were upstairs. I didn’t consider myself an evil person. But I knew I wasn’t the good little boy everyone thought I was. Until Nox I hid my preferences even from myself, saying I was just hacking. That my stalking people, and prying into their private lives was just hacking. I was being bad in doing it but I wasn’t catering to my kinks.

But as with all things, Nox likes to talk about things. Everything – especially sex and what gets us off. At first it was embarrassing. It still is, but Nox never judges me. He just smiles and nods and takes note. He makes me blush when he’ll bring up something I’ve said to get my blood boiling. Wrapping his arms around me from behind, running his long fingers over my stomach and perching just above my belt buckle. He wants to push deeper so bad I can feel him trembling behind me.

I had cameras all over my house. I didn’t normally reveal them to my lovers. I definitely didn’t tell my guests. They were all tied into my security system and that was the lie I told myself when I installed them. It’s just for security. I didn’t live in a high risk neighborhood, but I was a hacker and I had expensive equipment all over the house. I could see any camera from any room in the house with the right password. And I was watching the black and white images of Magnus and Alec in Nox’s kitchen.

It was all very domestic. I’d used the cameras to watch Nox cooking in my kitchen. He’d dance all over and spin. Nox never sang to his music. Dee belted out the lyrics even if she knew her voice was horrible. It didn’t matter. Nox never did. He’d mutter some songs under his breath, but then most of his music didn’t have lyrics, just a heavy beat. Though he was listening more and more to mine and Dev’s play lists. We’d both snuck music on to his phone and he would listen to them. Nox would make fun of the head banging and the mosh pit style dancing but he found himself nodding to the beat and doing less exaggerated movements too. It was hard not to.

My thoughts were making me hard and my hand had strayed to my pants. I wasn’t really paying attention to what was happening on screen. I knew Magnus was stirring the base mixture for our exorcism spell. I hadn’t seen Alec come up behind him. But I noticed now as his hands had snaked around waist and were rubbing Magnus much like I was doing to myself.

The whole thing made me harder. I couldn’t take my eyes off of them. I wished for sound from the cameras. I’d love to hear what they were saying, to hear the moans of pleasure as Alec stroked his lover’s cock. They were being naughty in someone else’s kitchen. That alone had to spark some heat. The idea of being caught was usually also a turn on. Dev and Dee were both exhibitionists, they liked to push me to my limits. To almost get caught. To do bad things to each other in public. Nox was easy any which way. And he wasn’t shy.

I watched Magnus and Alec, they didn’t do anything that if caught couldn’t be easily stopped and covered up. I imagined that Matt was going to have to change his sheets before he slept in them again. If he ever came back.

And just like that I broke my own mood. I’d fucked up. Nox wouldn’t be back in my kitchen dancing around so I could watch him. He was gone, and I’d thrown him out.

Exorcism Required

I was grateful that no one could read my thoughts. I found a lot of black magic sites, but even I knew to stay away from them. So it took me to find something I thought might work while Dean, Cass and Alec argued about the best method to disspell a demon from a body. I felt Magnus hovering. I looked up behind me and he smiled. He pointed at the spell I was looking at with a black finger nail and rings covering almost every finger. “That one. We could find all of that easily enough. Assuming that it’s in your world it should be here. I can concoct it.”

I turned in my chair and watched Alec and Dean arguing. It was like watching Nox fight with himself. Both made valid points. I wondered how Nox would get along with them. Would he let them argue. He’d be smirking, but would he take charge with someone else chomping at the bit to take charge? I could see our submissive leader falling into the background. But then I’d seen him stand up to his father before. And Dae’lin. No Nox wouldn’t slack in his work. He was too arrogant to do that.

I cleared my throat. And nothing happened. I didn’t expect they’d stop their arguing for me. Magnus was about to interrupt, but I held up my hand with a smile. I’d seen Nox do it before. Though I’d not actually seen it seen it. He snapped his fingers and there was a loud sound. I tried calling upon his power. I knew it didn’t work like that, but I saw the patterns form or what I imagined it looked like for Nox and the sound it made wasn’t as loud as his could be. But it got their attention. A pair of blue eyes and green flipped to me. Cass was looking all around for the sound.

“We have a spell we can cast that supposedly will dispell a price of hell from a body.” I said.

Alec’s eyes grew wider. “Really?”

Dean clamored over and nearly knocked me out of my chair, “Sorry, man.” He read the list and then looked at me, “So how much of this do you have on hand?”

“On hand?” I asked. “You seriously think we keep eye of newt and this…” I pointed to a word I didn’t even know how to pronounce, “on hand. I don’t even know what it is.”

Magnus said, “It would be easy if we were in our world. I don’t have contacts here. Does your Nox?”

I shrugged. “He doesn’t talk about magic like that.”

Dean sighed. “I have holy water and salt. But the other things I don’t have.”

Magnus and Dean debated about where they might get some of the stuff. Alec looked at me with a grin. “It’ll be black market items.”

I nodded. “Yeah, I already sent a search out looking for the needed items.”

Deep Dark Secrets

Alec changed the subject from my love life. “Dean and Cass are downstairs trying to make heads or tails of your computer program down stairs.”

I hurriedly got out of bed, “They didn’t touch anything did they?”

Alec shook his head. “Magnus wouldn’t let them. But they are trying to figure out what is all going down.”

I rushed past Alec who was still sitting on the end of the bed. I jumped down the stairs like Matt would. It was ironically very fun to skip down the stairs like that no matter how many times I told him not to. Same with his sliding down the banister. Last thing we needed was a broken leg. Though Nox could heal Matt, Drake, and Fae. But not me or Dev. Dee never got sick or hurt really.

I didn’t jump down the stairs to the basement. And I hadn’t realized Alec was so close on my heels. I hadn’t heard him following me. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to that. Everyone in my life was supernatural. I mean so was I but I didn’t have super speed or strength. I didn’t do things beyond human capabilities. I was just a hacker.

I sighed as I sat down in my chair which was quickly vacated by an angel who knew he shouldn’t be touching my things. I spared Cass a glare before pulling forward and checking things. Nothing had been tinkered with – that was good.

It was then I remembered it was just a dream. Fucking long ass dream too. Dev had to be keeping me under. He was so going to get his ass chewed out if he was making me miss work.

Dean pointed at the clustering of demons. “That’s where we were, right?”

Alec nodded, “We said yes.”

Dean turned and glared at Alec. “It’s his city.”

Magnus rolled his eyes. “It’s our city too. The streets are still the same. It’s the buildings that are different.”

“Yes, that’s where we were. It’s still hoping with demons.”

Alec nodded, “I’d assume Azazel is still there too.”

Dean nodded. “We can’t kill Sam.”

“What do you propose we do then?” Magnus asked. “Making a demon leave a possessed body is not always very easy, people can die in the process.”

“Exorcism works.”

Alec added, “On a prince of hell?”

Dean shrugged. “It’s worth a shot.”

“A shot we can’t risk taking.” Magnus and Alec said together.

Cass echoed “Jinx” again in a hushed tone.

While they were arguing over the whole thing I was sending a search out on the dark web. I wasn’t supposed to be on it on this computer. But it was a dream. And honestly my Dad wasn’t about to find out anyway I had so much protection from other hackers from the government, the only way my Dad would know was to see me doing it.

It hadn’t been hard to circumvent the traffic tracking algorithm they’d put on my access, or my computer. And the problem with giving a once black hat hacker access to the internet is they never really stopped doing what they knew how to do. I wasn’t the only one in my office who’d started working with the government because we got caught. And between the two of us we worked around the security measures. And since we were some of the world’s best no one questioned our work. Our handlers thought we were on the up and up and good little boys. Truth was I was still way more Wicked than I was Truth I just didn’t hack major systems like most hackers. My bread and butter was personal networks and computers. It was the voyeurist in me. I never hacked my friends or family. Or people who might know them. My collection of deep dark secrets extended to some pretty powerful people.

Adam had convinced me to dig deeper into Nox. Starting with unlocking the card he’d given me. The security clearance to get into it was deep. The encryption even deeper. We’d been hacking away at it for a good month. It would be easier to hack into the Venatori systems, find the key and get that than it was proving to be to hack the encryption on that card.

Adam had started poking at the Venatori system. He said it was pretty high tech, but more curious was that they had someone like me manning the security. We hadn’t yet found out. And I wondered if Nox knew about it. He probably did. He was pretty vocal about the exploitation of the other supernatural races.

Though it was likely he didn’t too. Adam seemed to think Nox kept secrets from me. He liked to burrow in and push the dirt at me he found about Nox. Things like Nox went to see Adrian a few times. I hadn’t been worried. Adrian was a therapist in his own right.

But Adrian was a Dom too – Nox’s to be exact. Nox swore he’d not been in the scene for years – since graduation he said. But Adam’s pushing had made him doubt Nox. Nox never lied to him. He always told him the truth even when he didn’t want to hear it. The last phone call I’d received was proof of that. He’d fought of vampires. Almost could have died – again.

I sighed as I hunted the dark web for anything on exorcising demons and specifically princes of hell. It’s not like magic was illegal but who the fuck is going to believe you summoned a demon, or saw an angel? The dark web was full of crazy shit. Things I knew all to well were true.

There were even vampire forums – and after talking with Nox they were legit things. The dark web didn’t just cater to my kind it was how vampire blood banks operated, how the vampires found raves with humans willing to let them feed on them. There was an entire secret world in the dark web and unless you truly believed in those things you’d think it was code for something or just lies.

Nox took me to a blood rave once. It was scary as shit. The whole place was lit with black lights. People wore collars and cuffs indicating what their pleasure was. We didn’t let anyone bite us so we didn’t have collars or cuffs. Nox never let go of my hand the entire time we’d been at the rave. We didn’t eat anything, we didn’t drink anything. But the music was loud and the dance floor was packed and sex was all around us. At least that was all that I remembered. And I didn’t remember much. Nox said it was because of the Ambrosia in the air. It dulled the senses and made humans susceptible to vampire wills.

I had no bit marks on me that hadn’t come from Nox himself. And I knew he’d given them to me at home. I remembered that. Nox was not pushy, but he had his moments where he wanted something and he took it. But there was always that moment where he asked. It wasn’t a vocal question anymore, just a glance, a growl in my ear. And I would give him that permission.

I adjusted in my chair and whispered to myself, “Fuck!”

Rambling

I woke up in my own house, in my own room, on my own bed. Everything was quiet. The sky was dark and I realized that I’d been asleep at least until night fall. I sat up and rubbed my eyes. I really didn’t know what was going on. Last thing I remembered was fighting back a bunch of demons.

I looked at the other side of the bed, still perfectly made, Nox’s pillow was perfectly position against the head board. I rolled over and reached under his pillow and pulled out the notebook. It wasn’t so much as private and I’d rifled through it before. I did it on nights he spent with Dev. They didn’t happen often, but they did. Or when he was gone before I woke – that happened way more often than before.

After Morpheus was dead Nox started a new note book. this one wasn’t littered with dark figures. It wasn’t even his dreams anymore. Well maybe they were, but he was drawing other things. The first page used to be the last page. It was the dream he dreamt about. The three eyes still creeped me out but at least here they didn’t follow you around. But you knew what they represented if you knew Nox. Each the color of our eyes. His fate, his loves. The three people he loved and were part of him.

There was a stone dragon curled up at the base of the tree. In the distances you saw a wolf howling at the moon. Around the tree was a cooper circle, it encompassed everything. It was a representation of Matt – he was a ground, a null, he protected us from magic Nox didn’t quite understand. Nox said it was new, that in older drawings it hadn’t been there. But it was now.

I didn’t understand the drawing. There were images Nox didn’t even knew what meant. His life written on paper. But he didn’t believe in fate or destiny. He said the images changed over the years. They weren’t always the same thing, only the tree. Even the eyes changed over time as his life evolved into what it is now.

It was scary thinking Nox saw the future, even in glimpses he didn’t know about. What else had he seen that he doesn’t talk about.

Flipping to the pages, there were images of all of us. Sketches of our faces, of our eyes, our hands. He was drawing us. His family. There were drawings of me and Dev curled up together playing video games. Of Dee baking in his kitchen. Drake playing with his cars. There was Matt playing basketball at the park and Fae with Dev playing the guitar. There was pictures of Jace and Mia with Naya.

Sometimes there were scary things in there. Nightmares he’d had. But his dream journal was becoming a sketch book.

A throat cleared behind me and I rolled to my side to see who was there. I saw a blue eyed boy staring back at me with a tray of food. “I was hoping you were awake.” He set the tray on the end of the bed and smiled shyly. He nodded towards the notebook, “What’s that?”

“Nox’s sketch book.” I said as I closed it and shoved it back under his pillow.

“He keeps it under his pillow?”

I laughed. “It’s a dream journal. But he sketches out the images he sees. But I think he’s just drawing in it to draw. There aren’t any dates anymore but he still does it every morning.”

“Why?” Alec asked as he grabbed a cup of coffee off the tray.

I shrugged. “I dunno. Probably habit. He doesn’t like change.”

“Who does?”

It sounded exactly like the conversation we’d had earlier. “Nox was diagnosed with OPCD when he was younger. Still has it now. He obsesses over order and structure and deviations from his normal cause massive panic attacks if he’s not prepared for the change. Some things like not having chicken salad for lunch on Thursday he can let slide. But if you disrupt all of Thursday lets say because you wanted to surprise him and take him on a day drip without giving him any notice because it’s a surprise makes his crash worse. He’ll go along. He’ll handle it well until it’s too much and then he curls up into himself and he’s nothing. He won’t talk, won’t eat, won’t sleep, just sits wherever he is and tries to capture himself again.”

“I take it, it has happened.”

I nodded. “Dee was surprising us all. Wanted to take us all out to the Hamptons for a day at the beach. Dee doesn’t know all of Nox’s hang ups so the fact it was at the beach was hang up number one. It was a surprise. Dee didn’t make any preparations for the boys and Nox had a panic attack even before we left. He calmed down, said he was okay. I knew better. Dev did too. But Nox is stubborn so we went. We made it through lunch and then Dee wanted to go out into the sand. Nox refused. Dee didn’t take no for an answer and well when push comes to shove Dee won and Nox was a mess from then on out. He followed every instruction without protest.”

“She broke him?”

“No.” I said sadly, “He submitted to her, gave her what she wanted. But he wasn’t there. Problem is with Nox, he puts on a fake smile and he acts happy. Dee refused to see it. Said he was fine and he agreed when she asked. She could have felt him, known what was wrong, but she doesn’t like being an empath so her shields were so tight. They always are Dev says.”

“I don’t know how you do it.”

“It’s a challenge. And we make mistakes like everyone else. But one thing about Nox that works in all of our favor is his insensate need to talk about everything.”

“You mean to for every decision?” Alec asked.

I shook my head. “No. Like you would in therapy. There is a problem and he won’t ask you what is wrong, he’ll just start talking to you about the problem as he sees it. His issues. His problems. And that usually prompts us to respond about our side of things. I don’t know if Dev tells him what we are thinking but Nox always seems to know when one of us needs to talk about something. Even if it’s work related.”

“Sounds good to have around.”

“You like talking about your feelings?”

Alec shook his head. “Well no.”

“Nox does. He’s been in therapy so long it just kinda falls out if you ask. If you don’t he’ll happily just zone out and think his problems through himself. But if you ask, be prepared to listen. I’ve fucked up a few times zoning out while he’s talking. And he’ll say something and I’ll just nod and he’ll call me on it. It’s embarrassing and he gets pissy and won’t talk for days.” I added, “Which you’d think was a good thing, but it’s not. Nox not talking is like Nox having a panic attack. Not good.”

I looked down at the food on my plate and realized it was all gone. I hadn’t even noticed I was eating.

Alec was chuckling at me. “And you say Nox likes to talk.”

A Fight

Azazel chuckled. “Nice try hunter.”

Scratching sound sounded all around us and I turned around to see thousands of skittering creatures crawling on the walls, scurrying towards us with their little clickity-clacking feet on the cement and pavement. What would Nox do?

It didn’t matter really, but I knew what I’d do in a game. I’d draw them to some place we could pick them off one by one. That was the best strategy. It was the one you used in paint ball too. I smiled to myself as I thought we don’t have to draw them anywhere. I could make that funnel. If only I knew how…

Air was all around me, I let Nox’s power go, let it flow into just the air, I treated it like mine, but it didn’t do anything. But I could see the glowing air around me. I formed it into a wall – no a dome around us with only one way in, right in front of Alexander Lightwood and his bow.

He smiled and nodded as he realized what I’d done. But he didn’t say anything.

Azazel had run off and Dean had started to chase him but the wall I erected impeded his progress. “Damn it! I could have had him.”

“Another time.” Magnus shouted. “Right now we’ve bigger problems.”

And then the little girl who had introduced us to the demons charged us with a series of crawling demons. Magic was wonky now. Demons couldn’t possess shape here with out a body. They weren’t able – yet here it was. Another case of my dreamworld making itself known to me.

I felt each time those skittering creatures hit my wall. I felt it jar down to my core. My bones rattled. Their scratching claws against it grated along my skin. It was part of me. I could feel each movement against the air on my skin.

I shuddered with each pounding. But I held strong it was just a wall of air it would hold.

The demons that came through were picked off one and a time by Dean, Alec and Magnus. Cass stayed by them and got any that got past the three ranged. It was so very video game like. And all I was doing was holding a wall.

I’d seen Nox do some big things. I lifted my hand and thought fire, a small ball of fire flickered in my hand and I smiled. I shot it out at the demons scurrying towards Cass. It was more than one. My wall flickered a little as I divided my attention, the faded wall soon coalesces around the creatures cutting them in half as they tried to take advantage of my mistake.

Dean looked at me and shouted, “Don’t do that again.”

I nodded. I held the wall. I’d only hold the wall.

Creature by creature they fell. None never getting past Cass. If one got past I wasn’t sure what would happen. Everyone else was so focused on the entrance that they missed the little girl with a razor sharp hand. I tried to shout out but as I reached out to yell a fireball lept from my hand. The girl screeched as it landed and Magnus turned to look back at the fireball. I’d killed again with the power.

I felt the power draining from me. The wall flickering. It didn’t fade as I pushed all my strength into it. I couldn’t fail at the one job I had. To keep everyone safe. I had to… And then there was darkness.

The Docks

We took the train as close as we could and then we walked the rest of the way. Alec was quiet so I didn’t have to talk about things. I wasn’t sure if he was angry with me or just quiet. Or worried. I wasn’t good at reading people like Nox or Dev.

We only stood around for a few minutes before Dean walked around the corner while Magnus and Cass were busy talking. I over heard a few sentences of Magnus telling Cass about how his magic worked. Cass looked enthralled, but there was a confused look on his face. Magic didn’t work like that in his world. Magic like Magnus’ didn’t work like that here either. Conjuring things and teleportation just wasn’t something. Though Nox’s ability came close when he created objects from nothing. But he said that was all elements, and the shadow walking for vampires was the closest thing to teleportation.

Magnus probably thought our magic was odd too.

Magnus and Alec exchanged a kiss on the cheek and then turned towards the rest of us. Everyone looked at me. “I… uh.”

Dean grunted. “So where’s the demons.”

I looked around and got my bearings and then pointed. “Two blocks that way. In a warehouse by the water.”

Dean asked, “You sure Azazel’s there? I need to find Sam. And you can’t kill him!”

Alec assured Dean, “We aren’t killing anyone.”

Just then a little girl walks around the corner. There was something about the way she walked that had me on edge. She didn’t walk like she was a little girl, or even like she was comfortable in her own skin. It reminded me of the way Nox walked on occasion, on a bad day . On a day he’s preoccupied with his appearance, or his clothes are itchy and scratching his skin. Either ways she didn’t look like she was a girl. And it had nothing at all to do with the dead black eyes that stared back at us.

Her voice was dark and harsh as it came out of her tiny mouth. “Welcome, friends. We’ve been waiting for you.”

Dean had his gun pointed at the girl. Cass had a silver blade in one hand. It was an angel killer. It killed anything and sent it to nothing. Never to regain a body again – angel or demon. It did destroyed the soul. So a human was just gone forever too.

Alec’s bow was pointed at the demon but he hadn’t pulled an arrow from his still hidden quiver. The only person who wasn’t ready to fight was Magnus, but by the way he stood he was just as ready to fight the little girl as the others. Maybe I was the only one who didn’t react.

“A strange time.” The voice echoed in the alley way. The girl looked back to see a shadowed man walking towards her. A demon.

A demon wearing a Sam suit. Sam was Dean’s brother and it was odd seeing yellow eyes staring back at us. It would have been one thing to see yellow eyes from anyone, but to a character I had watched over and over again. Sam spoke again when he was bathed in the light of the sun. “Shadowhunters, and the fake Men of Letters.” He looked at me. “And a fake Venatori. Interesting. Tell me brother warlock why do you join these creatures.”

Magnus didn’t have a chance to answer as Dean stepped forward and tried to make a bargain. “Let my brother go and we’ll let you live.”

Alec looked at Dean, “You know that’s not going to work, right?”

Dean looked at Alec with a smirk, “I know that, but I it’s worth a shot.”
