Ashbourne

The weather is still cold, but it’s slowly getting warmer with Spring well on its way. The day light hours are as long as those of the night, but the nights are getting shorter. In the Wellsorrow Region, the Shadowfell despair is fading in its cycle. The people of Ashbourne and surrounding areas are feeling happier and it’s easier to shake the despair, and harder to fall under its influence. There is a half moon in the night sky tonight. A red comet will be visible throughout most of the night.

Rain woke me up kicking my feet and I groaned with pain. “Ow. My fucking head.” I curled up in my bedroll again.

Rain asked again, “Seriously what’s wrong?”

ae’Nyx jolted out of his bedroom and began searching his things. He looked frantic, clutching his head and then moving through his bags again. It hurt to look at him. My vision was blurred.

A cold hand brushed my cheek. “The pain will subside in an hour or so.”

He looked up at Rain watching us with a grim smile. “The vial, I gave him last night. Where is it?”

Rain started looking under the bed and through my things. He frowned. “Rosana had it last I saw it.”

ae’Nyx growled. The creature in the corner watch and grumbled. “Help?”

The cool hand caressed my forehead and rubbed the back of my neck before he went to speak with the creature in that strange language they spoke.

The door to our room opened and ghostly blur walked in. My head spun and I curled up against the bedroom. “Fuck!”

The boys slept and Alushtas fell into a soft slumber himself. The women never returned. No footsteps padded across the floor in the middle of the night. The world woke with a new dawn and Alushtas was awake with the crowing of the far off rooster.

It was a bright new day. The loom of the leech was felt but the despair of his homeland slide from his skin. He rolled his things back into his backpack and kicked the feet of the boys lying on the floor.

“The women are gone.” The bed were made still and there was no sign of the redheads gear. Miranda’s things still lay in a pile. “I don’t think they slept here last night. I don’t want to belittle their initiative, but I’m certain they never returned after you went to sleep.”

The boys roused slowly though they both looked a little pained. “What’s wrong?” he asked.

Miranda followed Rosana until she slipped down the dark alleyway. The darkness obscured her vision, but the woman just vanished from sight.

She walked the streets of Ashbourne waiting until the early hours of dawn before returning to the Sacred Horses Inn and finding a table in which to eat a measly breakfast of porridge. She still had a job to do, and exacting payment from al’Zand would become her top priority. He would pay for slighting her. And her patron would get what he desired and more.

Down the stairs and out into the night, Rosana ran. It wasn’t exactly fleeing, but she had what she needed and the boy didn’t matter.

Footfalls behind her alerted her to being followed and she ducked into the darkened alley where she concentrated on her form. The muscles in her body shifted slight, the bones realigned. Some lengthened and others shrank, where she had been tall and lithe like an elf, Rosana now looked like a dwarf with a stocky build and a graying beard.

Hadril Copperforged stepped out of the other side of the alley at a slow walk carrying the prized vial in his oversized hand. A smile spread across his lips as the footsteps faded from his ears and now Hadril was free to find the guild house. He needed to be gone from this vile place. It’s darkness was seeping into his bones.

Sleep didn’t immediately take me. It never did. I had learned long ago to fake sleep so my mother wouldn’t hurt me, or make things worse. I felt the eyes on me. All those eyes watching me, and only one set seemed at all to care. And only one I cared about.

But it was the dreams where Kor spoke to me. He tormented my dreams when he couldn’t walk free. He raved about killing the blue-eyed man. He wanted to suck the soul from those eyes and make the power his. Kor was an evil man.

The supply of Tranquil was running low and he had to make more. There was no telling what happened to the remainder of the vial he’d given Zand, the red head seemed interested in the vial more so than himself. It wouldn’t be the first time an alchemist tried to pry the recipe from him. But it was nothing he could give them, nothing he could do. Part magic, part concoction, all came from the Shadowfell itself to remove it’s taint as if you were part of the fell.

Kor’s torment continued… until the dawn light shone through the window.

When noone fell for her dramatics Miranda was more upset than she had pretended to be. Never once had her attempts to manipulate a man failed so spectacularly as they had just then. al’Zand had only eyes for the boy — they all did and it irked her beyond recognition.

But soon the men were all asleep and Rosana was quietly in a corner. Miranda watched as the woman examined the vial of goo she’d confinscated. But soon Rosana was slipping out into the darkness of the inn.

Miranda set herself to follow.
