Ashbourne

The weather is still cold, but it’s slowly getting warmer with Spring well on its way. The day light hours are as long as those of the night, but the nights are getting shorter. In the Wellsorrow Region, the Shadowfell despair is fading in its cycle. The people of Ashbourne and surrounding areas are feeling happier and it’s easier to shake the despair, and harder to fall under its influence. There is a half moon in the night sky tonight.

I needed to chase after my things, but I couldn’t pull myself away from those eyes. The slim face that held them looked underfed and hollow. He winced as he moved away, but he never broke my gaze.

“Are you hurt?” I reached across the distance to his cheek. My fingers brushed his skin, and it was cold to the touch. So cold it almost felt like he was burning up and I jerked my hand away prior to getting burned.

The boy slunk back into the shadows and pressed himself into a corner made by crates and the stone wall behind him. “I’m sorry.” I said softly. “I won’t hurt you.”

He let a small laugh out. I had hurt him. I’d tripped over him.

Sounds from the end of the alley could draw my attention, but I let it go as I moved slowly towards the boy I’d run into. I wished for a light, something to see in the darkness. But there was nothing safe to burn in this alley and setting the entire city on fire didn’t sound like a good idea to me.

“Are you alright?” I asked again as I slowly approached with my hand outstretched. I wanted to touch him again, but those eyes. I couldn’t get enough of them.

What should al’Zand do?

al’Zand hadn’t returned and Miranda was parched. She took a break, much to the house’s regret. The crowd spit and spewed words she dared not repeat — not from a lady. She scoffed in her mind.

The red head sat down at a nearby table and Miranda joined her. “Mind if I join you. We women have to stick together.”

The red head looked around at all the leering men then gave her a nod. “They don’t bother me.”

Miranda chuckled and leaned in. “To be honest, they don’t bother me either. But they don’t need to know that.” She sat down and the slim little waitress brought her another bowl of left over gruel and a dark ale. Perfect! Miranda patted the girl on her ass with a quick smile and before the girl turned around, another grouch of a man made a rude gesture and she was off to tend to his needs.

“What’s a pretty thing like you do in here all alone?” Miranda asked. “Obviously not here for the men. Better places in better districts than this lowly sea district, I’m sure.” Miranda winked. “And the women are scarce.”

What should Miranda do?

I was so tired. But the thought of running out of Tranquil drove me into the city and into the disparate locations where I might find a Boggle. In my mother’s prison, Boggle’s came to me. I might not be so lucky so far from the Leech. It felt less here, but when darkness descended upon the city I felt the walls closing in on me.

If I were to befriend the creature, I had to know what it wanted. I thought about it on the wait for a Boggle to show up as I sat in the shadows of an alleyway behind boxes like a beggar or miscreant. I belonged here much like the Boggle.

I could barely hear the noise of a nearby inn from where I sat. People were so close and yet I still felt all alone in this world.

In the darkness, the shadows slithered as if something were moving in them. A small smile drew across my lips. What I had been waiting for. I reached out across the alley way when a man ran past carrying too many things. A waterskin full of water smacked me in the head and I tumbled into the middle of the alley. The Boggle scurried past me and I scrambled after it. But soon after the first man ran past another barreled through and crashed into my side. Ouch! I whimpered to myself. The pain of his knee in my rib cage had me curled over on myself.

My breathing was raspy as I tried to pull in air that was lost upon the collision. I looked over at the fallen man, his eyes were ice blue and I couldn’t take mine from his. But the Boggle was getting away.

There was a new sound the way the man was running…

The city was fabulous. I hadn’t found who I was looking for. But then I hadn’t even bothered to stop and ask either. The sun sank in the sky. The moon rose and the feeling of home settled upon the land. It was comforting in the grays and the despair from the Leech, while only a fraction of what was home, made Ashbourne all that more familiar.

I lost the awe as the light faded and Alushtas made for his mark. The draw was keener now that his mistress had a tighter grip on the world. The boy beckoned and I would find him.

I wandered the city as before but with a purpose following my eyes and ears. The scent of despair that one of our lineage could only have. And in the darkness a man carrying to packs ran towards Alushtas. Whatever should I do? The possibilities were endless from letting him go to becoming a casualty of a quick armored boot to the chest.

The thief darted into the back halls and out into the alley behind the Inn. I followed at top speed, bouncing into the walls on a sharp corner, cracking whatever weakened rot fill board I’d landed against. “Fuck!”

But I didn’t have time to worry about the damage as I sped out the door into the darkness. I looked up and down the alley to find my target and I sprinted after him. He would not get away from me.

He rounded a corner, and I followed in hot pursuit. He jumped over the ardent flames and threw aside the zibelline linen hanging in the middle of the alley as we raced through a residential section of the Dock district. The entire city was asleep, or it felt like it. The darkness had descended upon the day somewhere between entering the Inn and this moment and it was almost suffocating. Why was I even doing this?

A small thought spurred me on. My good luck charm was in my backpack? As I thought to still my feet and check, a black blur bolted out in front of me followed by something much slower and I crashed into the larger dark cloaked creature and tumbled to the ground face first. The sound of a cricket in the nearby shadow gave me a thought. A whimper came from the felled creature behind me, and I looked to find a pair of the most amazing set of eyes I had ever seen — a golden brown with dark flecks of purple glowing with their own light. A hood framed the creature’s face and I couldn’t make out the features.

I didn’t have time for this. My things….

Such a fool. Miranda watched al’Zand leave his post on the stage to chase after some ruffian. Things were replaceable. He had his lute, that’s all he needed. She’d miss the cute little outfits she’d brought, but some other person might love them more. Miranda kept all her prized possessions on her body at all times. This was nothing new. He’d learn, one way or the other.

With a strum of her lute, and the quick gesture of her hands, and the power of her song magic tickled the air. The eirey haunting of the sea. The song of sorrow and loss, everyone in this godforsaken place, knew it all too well and wouldn’t notice the additional effect her song gave to the area.

The magic drifted to the door, to a redhead who was drawn to the stage. She looked well off. A good mark. Miranda smile and met her eye. Maybe al’Zand leaving would leave a good plaything in his wake. Though if she lost him, her master would be angry. The thought sent shivers down her spine and the song quaked a moment in its spell.

But it wasn’t enough to lose the patron’s rapture and the red head still stared on. What, oh what should I do? Miranda thought to herself. So many wrong choices led her to Riva’s hand, and now… now he held it around her throat and if she didn’t do his bidding, her son might not live the life, she couldn’t give him any other way. But the boy had no money, and she’d found him once, she’d find him again — he wasn’t leaving through the docks without her knowing. She’d make sure of it.

But for now, maybe another lucrative target or a quick bouncing of the springs? A red head maybe to fleece her of her strange accoutrements?
