No More Party

By the time we reached my floor Ant had hung up with telecom and they were letting Cavenough do his thing. I’d listen later. I’m sure I had to smooth over things with Dee and Sage. I was surprised when I opened the door to see that the music was not playing. Jin was busy cleaning up cups and plates and various other tidbits of garbage around the apartment.

“What happened?” I asked.

Jin turned and pulled out here ear bud and frowned. “What was that?”

“What happened?” I asked again. “Why is the party over?”

Jin frowned, “Ask Dee.”

I groaned. Ant laughed. “Good luck with that.”

I sighed as I headed back to our room. Her and Sage were having an argument as I walked into the room. Sage was yelling. “This wasn’t your party.”

I wanted to turn around and go the other direction but I knew better than that. “What happened?” I asked them.

Sage looked at me with a frown. “You left.”

I sighed. “I’m leaving again. I have to go find a baby were before he gets hurt.”

“Then why are you home.” Sage shouted.

“I had to bring another were here, and Alec wanted me to do something and I figured since I was almost home I’d come see if everything was alright. Apparently it’s not.”

Dee’s glare was hot. “You and Dev just leave. Like we don’t matter. Sage was all for letting the little kids out there rut and screw right on the dance floor.”

“They weren’t screwing on the fucking dance floor.” Sage shouted. “I was watching everything. You were the one getting out of hand and when Matt said something you you went off the deep end and threw everyone including Matt out of the house.”

“You what?” I knew that was not what happened.

Sage looked at me and sighed. “I called Matt he and Chris were going to walk Andrew home then come back home, they’d crash with Ryan if Dee was serious.”

“You have no right to kick a sixteen year old kid out of my house Dee.”

“It’s my house too.”

“Yeah Dee it is. It’s Matt’s fucking house too. He’s here. He’s mine. Just because he doesn’t let you walk the fuck all over him doesn’t mean you can kick him out.”

Dee stood and stared at me then flipped me off. “You can fuck yourself tonight!”

I smirked. “Gladly duckling.”

Dee grabbed Sage’s hand and tugged on him and head out of the shared room.

Sage dragged his heels and then he stopped and went along. “Sage, you don’t have to go.”

He looked at me and smiled. “I know.” He stopped and pulled his hand free of Dee’s grasp. “I’ll be there in a little bit.”

I shook my head. “No you two can stay here. I’m leaving anyway.”

I said as I headed out the door. Sage followed me out the door and grabbed my hand when we were in the kitchen. “Nox…”

I stopped but didn’t turn around. He turned me around physically so he could look down into my eyes. I loved those three extra inches he had on me but right now I didn’t want to. He smiled and I relented ant gave him a smile in return. “I know Dee is just mad, but if I don’t go with her she’ll do something stupid. And her stupid isn’t your stupid.”

I laughed, “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“You will go do dangerous things, but yourself in danger to save someone else. Dee’s going to go fuck some other guy because she’s pissed at us and that will cause all sorts of more drama because she doesn’t think of the ramifications.”

“So you let her walk all over you?”

Sage shrugged. “I know it seems that way.”

“It is that way. You do whatever she wants. You don’t spend any time with me or Dev anymore Sage.”

“I…” Sage stammered then nodded. “I’m sorry about that. Dee is exceedingly more and more unhappy with you and Dev. And I try to stay on her good side.”

“You know it’s not just Dee right?”

“Adam?” he asked.

I nodded. “If you aren’t with Dee you are with Adam. No time for either of us. You and me haven’t watched a movie in ages.”

“You could watch with us.”

“Watch with you and Adam? And let Adam glare at me the whole time? I don’t think so.” I said.

Sage sighed. “He’s my brother.”

“I know. He’s family. I get it but I don’t like the way he manipulates you anymore than how Dee does.”

“I’m a big boy, Nox. I can take care of myself.”

“Fine.” I said and I turned around and left the kitchen with Ant in front of me. He didn’t want to be between Sage and I but he was there if it went south.

“Nox.” Sage said again and I stopped again.

“I do love you.”

I nodded. “I know. And I love you.” I said and walked out of the apartment. My fucking life was going to fall apart. So much for a happy few months.

I Hate You

Just so you are all aware I’m not talking about you in any sense. That is completely directed at AJ!

Last night was a crap sleep night for AJ. I spent a caffeine induced wake period bouncing all over plot and reasons for my story for the larger arc of this new rewrite. I was bouncy this morning probably over tired.

But AJ has me over at the First Age and the site is hoping for the moment and I just got in a fight with some humans with powerful weapons. AJ just did some major damage.

I hate her. She killed my mood. But I did chill out enough to take a nap. I’m still reeling from that emotional outlet but I’m not bouncing. I like bouncing. And to top it all off AJ’s feeling a bit run down now. Take that!

James Wright

I hadn’t realized the impact I’d made on Ant’s life. Or the fact that all my saving vampires and werewolves was actually hurting them. Had life been better without my interference?

Ant wrapped his arm around my shoulders and laughed, “You are to critical of yourself Nox. Leave it alone.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

Ant laughed. “Even if I hadn’t heard the gist of those thoughts, I know that look on your face.”

“What look is that?”

“The one that says I’m not worthy.” Ant grinned at me, “I’d say it was Wayne and Garth quality but you have no idea who they are.”

I sighed. “Tell Sage and Dev and I’m sure they will enlighten me.”

Ant grinned. “I won’t subject you to it, Nox.”

I started walking down the hall towards the infirmary. “Did our wolf calm down?”

Ant nodded. “He did. He recently released himself from the Infirmary. He had been there for a few months on anti-psychotics and once on the streets stopped talking his meds. His name is Larry Cavenough and he checked himself in right around the time you were there the first time.”

“He’s on his meds now?”

Ant shook his head. “No. But we have an empath who’s calmed him and he’s trying to reach out to James Wright. Our telecommunications team is routing the calls to a busy signal.”

“Let him call Mr. Wright and listen to his call.”

Ant nodded. “Do you wish to speak to him first?”

I nodded and Ant grinned as he pushed open the next door. “He’s through here.”

I stepped into a room that looked oddly familiar. I’d spent a few days in a similar room. The whole clinical feel was very off putting. “Mr Cavenough, I’m Nox. Are you ready to talk to me?”

He shook his head. “I can’t talk to you.”

“Why not?”

His smile turned grim. “You will die. No, you are dead. Yes – dead.”

“I’m not dead.”

“They saw you die. Burnt body to a crisp. They said I could go. But you are alive. A ghost made flesh.”

“I’m not a ghost I promise you.”

He shook his head. “Begone foul ghost. Go.”

“Why are you calling James Wright?”

He frowned. “James needs to know.”

“He needs to know what?” I asked patiently.

“That you live.” And then he turned to the window and waved his arms like he was shooing me away. “Go ghost. I can’t. I won’t. James will kill me.”

I sighed and turned to leave. Ant was on my heels. “That was interesting.”

“Let him talk to James. I want to know what’s going on.”

Ant nodded and pulled out his phone and started calling while I headed to the service elevator to head back upstairs to what was left of my teenage party. I prayed nothing was broken.

Crossing

A year a go today I wrote this. #throwbackthursday

The Mind of Nox

Before I get into the topic I’d like to apologize for the horrible posts the past three days. They were all written on a phone while riding in a car while AJ tried not to get too car sick before finishing it.

Anyway, There comes a time in everyone’s life where they reach a crossroads, the crossing of two paths. There were plenty of minor crossroads throughout my life, but I can think of only one that set me on the course of my current path. As always there was the easy decision, and then the one that no one else would like. As always it’s one of my typical rants here – how the Venatori kill before thinking about why they are hunting a particular supernatural being.

My very first hunt was a ghost who was inhabiting humans and killing people. The current host for the ghost was a…

Why?

When I reached the Resort’s upper floor I was greeted with Ant standing next to the front desk counter flirting with a woman. She was supernautural but I couldn’t tell you what flavor of human she was. Paths were difficult. I knew she was a path but that was the extent of it.

Ant smiled at me and the woman spoke to me while still holding Ant’s eyes. “I am Shirley, all of us who work the front desk are strong telepaths. The night shift is manned by some of Valentina’s favorites.”

“So you vet anyone who gets in the elevator before they ever get here.”

She turned her brown eyes from Ant’s and looked at me with a nod. “Yes, sir. If someone shady were to get on the elevator I would raise the silent alarm and security would be waiting on this floor. If the threat were mundane I would call the human police and report an anonymous call.”

“How deep do you dig?” I asked.

She looked down and frowned. “Much farther than I suspect you would like.”

“So not just their current top thoughts?”

“It’s a safe…” Ant started to interrupt but I looked at him and he cut off his words.

“Is it damaging?” I asked returning my gaze to hers.

“Did you feel me proding your shield?”

I had to think about it. I hadn’t. But I had been dealing with my own anxiety about the elevator that I hadn’t been paying attention. I shook my head, “But I was preoccupied.”

Shirley nodded. “Your fear is highly irrational. You know it’s safe, yet your afraid none-the-less.”

“Did you get past my shields?” I asked.

She shook her head. “Once I realized who it was I stopped, sir. I mean, Nox.”

I had one final question, “What do you do with the private thought you learn while digging?”

“You mean company secrets, things like that?” She asked and I nodded my ascent. “Nothing. Il Cane vets each of us personally. Mr. Giovanni, the senior, vets us after she has approved us. And Ant does the final vetting now that the Night Life building is under his control.”

“Wait, when did that happen?” I asked.

Ant smirked at me. “You may own the top floor Nox. But the building is mine. A gift from mother a decade ago. The Resort as we call it now, was only a prison. All safe houses were small and defensible around the city in Harlem. And then I met a boy and our influx of young vampires who needed help grew. And the pack leader of New York came to me and said the Infirmary was a bad place to keep hostile weres. And thus I expanded.”

I laughed. “All because you met a boy? Were you trying to impress him?” I asked knowing fully well Ant was talking about me.

He shook his head and laughed. “No. I was taking his example and expanding upon it. If he was going to bring me vampires to deal with I had to have a better place than a deep dark cell to keep them in while we taught them how to feed and blend in with society.”

“And now?” I asked.

Ant smiled. “And now I have the pleasure of working along side him and watching that vision turn into the way our world works.”

“It’ll never be the way the world works. Even humans don’t manage that.” I said.

Ant laughed. “But we aren’t human. We are supernatural. We are higher and better and we protect their innocence. That is how the world works and it always will.”
